Who are the people that claim pool is on the down hill slide?

I think bar table/league pool is doing fine but the pro side has been declining for a while now although not as bad as many say.

I think people are rightfully upset about the number of pool rooms/halls closing down across the country. Fortunately there are 3 rooms with many 9 footers within 10 miles of where I live- but LA is obviously a huge metropolis. Many other areas aren’t so fortunate
I've had a no-alcohol family oriented poolroom here in western NC for 23 years, with a top notch facility and 9-foot tables, so we attract all the good players in this area as well as the families / recreational players. In the early years we had waiting lists on Friday and Saturday nights - mainly teenagers and young adults, and famliies as well.

No more the case - Saturdays are our slowest day and night, Friday night as well. If it weren't for our food (90-95% of our revenue largely from customers who have never played pool here) I would have had to close the doors a long time ago. The young generation is just not playing pool any more, unless it's a pool game on their cell phones. The only night I feel like we still have a poolroom is on Monday nights when we have our weekly 9-ball handicapped tournaments, which attract 20 +/- players. However, nearly all of those players I won't see again until the following Monday night, and then wonder why they never get any better. Very sad.

Hell, just off the top of my head, here are some of the pool rooms in the Metro DC area I can remember from the 60's and 70's, and I'm sure this list isn't complete:

DC
14th & Irving (Brunswick)
14th & Park Road (Baggy's)
14th & Decatur (bus barn)
14th & W
14th & T (Lowe's or Louie's)
14th & Swann (Wordy's)
14th & H (above the Casino Royale)
14th & G (below the barber shop)
1200 block of U (Lincoln)
9th & U/Florida
600 block of T (Golden Q and Stage Door)
7th Street below Florida
Georgia Ave. just south of Missouri Avenue (Louie's)
100 block of G St NW (next to the GPO building)
1200 block New York Avenue (next to the Town theater)
11th St just north of Pennsylvania Avenue
200 block of Pennsylvania Ave SE
Benning Road near Spingarn High School, next to the Miles Long Sandwich Shop
Several along H St NE near 8th St.

Maryland
Guys & Dolls (best action room before Beanie's opened in '68)
Coral Hills
Bladensburg Golden Cue
Thayer Ave. Silver Spring
Flower Ave. Silver Spring (Roman's, another great action room)
House of Lords, Wheaton
Glenmont Cue Club
Rockville Pike near the auto dealership
Bethesda Billiards on Old Georgetown Road
Some Old School place on U.S. 1 north of the DC line
Langley Park (Joey Spaeth ran it for awhile while Gary was learning his trade)

Northern Virginia
Jack & Jill (Beanie's) (best action room in practically the entire country)
Top's (just off U.S. 1 South, across from Crystal City)
Westmont (Columbia Pike & Glebe Road)
Some place on Lee Highway before Falls Church

And as I said, that's just a partial list drawn from an imperfect memory. I'm sure I missed quite a few, especially in the suburbs.

Changing times, effects all businesses. The days of pool bis with no food or alcohol died 30 years ago, it just takes a while for some of the stronger zombies to die off. Some people here on AZB wanted to argue with me,and actually got mad because I said Hard Times in LA would be closing their doors in not to long, because the don't sell food for shit, and CAN'T sell alchohol because it's against the city ordinance, so it'll be closed down as well.

If that place had alcohol, they would have been close YEARS ago. You never saw all out brawls there.
The place is closing because that whole block is getting sold and/or getting redeveloped.
Even a car lot wasn't safe.
In the mid 90's and late 90's Efren and Busti lit that place up with tons of action.

ESPN.
When was the last time you saw a new tournament shown on ESPN ?

The WPBA people aren't saying pool is on the down side because they no longer exist afaik.

When Hard Times closes here in 2019, the pool scene in LA is really going to take a major blow .

Yeah, I've talked to the owners of Hard Times, they say everything's fine... but
the condition of the place says different. IMO, it'll be one of those surprise
closings.. one day you go there and it's locked up with a sign on the door.
I sure hope not... the place is world famous, a real pool hall.

I started a thread a while ago about HT.. I'll bump it up, maybe we'll get some info.

I've lived in Germany and Italy and can safely say Europe is no where near close to the US when it comes to player participation. We've lost more bars and pool rooms in this country than they've opened in the last 20 years.

So you're saying there is more billiard games being played in the US than in Europe?

That sure seems wrong based on the snooker I've watched but I could be wrong.

Since RKC is gonna have this big multi-table event center he might as well just build it in L.A. That way when tournaments aren't going on he could run it as a poolroom. ;)

Sure, he should pick the most expensive place possible to bake his pie in the sky.

Interesting statistic. If I've lost more money over the last 20 years than you have won who is better off?

I have to dissagree with this, the problem is not with the fan base not showing up as much to watch live events, the problem is people don't really like leaving home much anymore. Shopping malls are dying because the shoppers are shopping online more now than ever, no need to go out to xi as much shopping anymore, and it's declining more and more every year. You have to solve the problem of getting the snooker/pool events in front of that stay at home viewer now, and as advertisers are declining to support the free TV viewing, instead turning to internet advertising, free TV isn't so cheap by the hour for snooker/pool events anymore, so THAT is why matches are being shortened up, it's not for the good of the viewers.

A fair point, but it doesn’t change the fact that short races are the only viable option going forward (in the short term).

I it could be the fact that pool is just so damn hard to master.
We all hear, oh, the top 40 players, play 8-10 hours a day, and the bottom 30 of that 40 really can't compete consistently with the top 10, much less the top 5.
Think about what 8-10 hours a day means... there is probably no other sport on the planet were the top guys practice that much, it's physically not possible in golf, tennis, football, baseball, on and on...
What's the physical requirement, stand long periods and have good back, eyes, and legs... and mind.
Physical talent is not as important, but, talent is a must, just some weird gift of understanding physics and geometry and the patience to repeat it over and over and over. Now how many kids today are willing to invest that kind of work, ha, I haven't met one in years!
So, perhaps it's the fact that work ethic has died with the new generation. Old school realizes you start here and work HARD to get there... noone just starts at the top!
But hey, my 27 cents can't even get a coke!

You do know that snooker has never been popular in the US right?

Some musicians definitely put that kind of training time in, if not more. And they do it from childhood in many instances.

I train amateur and professional athletes. You'd be surprised how many hours they put in and the training is far, far more intense than pool.

You guys can laugh at me and make fun all you want, but at least I have a plan, and I'm trying to do something with it, while you guys sit back and wait for someone else to straighten this sport out, because none of you have anything to offer!

Here's something for all of you to make fun about!!! This is a copy of an email I got today from Fastenal.

Thank you for the information Glen. The product itself, does Slocum warehouse it? Would the PO’s go to Slocum or who would be the official vendor of the product?

You do know that snooker has never been popular in the US right?

Yes. And I'm aware they call soccer football. But while soccer and football are significantly different sports, snooker and pool aren't, particularly in this discussion. I think I read on one of the many threads covering the same thing that many years ago European snooker was in the same boat as US pool is now. From what I've seen available online the Europe snooker tour is rocking. If that poster happens to see this I'd like to ask him for a pm with a link to how it all came about. I doubt the architect of that revival spent countless hours in stupid pissing contests trying to prove who is the smartest person in the room.

I hope you succeed in getting a pro tour together. Chances are everyone on this site does. But the way you interact with your potential customer base leads me to believe you're going to have a tough time selling your plan. I get it, you know the folks at Diamond tables (and Chad) and several people here say you're a top notch table installer- none of which gives you the tools to succeed at starting a tour. It just seems you need attention and periodically come on AZB to get it. So that's my three minutes of attention to you. Take it for what it's worth, which is exactly what you paid for it.

Here's another free tip- don't put your potential customers private emails on a public website. Holy cow that's stupid. Hope it doesn't get back to him.

Snooker pros don't even put in hours like that and they have a prize money incentive to do so!

4,5,6 hours yes....but 10...probably unrealistic for a pro sportsman, let alone a pool 'pro' (I use inverted commas as most pool pro's aren't true pro's but good amateurs that earn a bit from their hobby).

(Yes I know there are a very tiny minority that buck the above trend).

Funny thing about that, he agreed that pre-promtion of a new product was a good way to build up sales.
