Im looking into getting an older JW refinished, with an extremly tight, slickish, cortland linen wrap.. I would rather not pay an arm and a leg.. Any suggestions from past experiences would be appreciated.. thx,
Rob

Mike Webb

Quality does not come cheap, To have it done by some one who knows what they are doing you can expect to pay a couple hundred Bucks. I would suggest Mike Webb, You can contact him here, He is one of the best for sure..

Cortland? I am glad to see you appreciate the best.

You need to contact somebody that actually has Cortland for one thing. You do understand how much a Cortland wrap will cost right? Of course, a refinisher can always buy some Cortland...but the stuff isn't exactly falling off trees and most don't sell what they've got. It's one of the most, if not the most, expensive wrap materials there is. You can get elephant cheaper, so I am not sure how that figure in with your bargain hunting.

There are several people that are top notch. I'll add Scott Sherbine to the list.

Webb

Without a doubt Mike Webb for the refinish. Just had my Scruggs done for a very reasonable price. He's not at the expo so i'm assuming he's home working. hit him up.

Go to the website I suggested. You will find before and after fotos of their work. You will not regret it if you choose them.

Steve Klapp would be a good pick.

Hm... isn't Stroud still around? That's probably the best option if you can reach him and not have to wait for 3 years for the work hehe.

refinish

I would also second the advice of Chopdoc and Dr Dissent. From what I know Scott Sherbine does excellent work.

I have heard nothing but good things about Proficient Billiards including a strong endorsement from a top cue maker.

i spoke with scott at proficient billiard and he informed me that i would need to find the cortland myself because he didnt carry any in stock.. Does anyone know where u can even buy this stuff? ive looked around, including atlas and i can find it for sale anywhere.

Real Cortland ?
About $125 long enough for one cue ?

Don't forget Ryan at Mueller's Rat cues.

He does excellent work, refinished a Meucci Original I had to like new condition. Not sure if he would have Cortland, though. It is rare these days, not many old spools left.

LOL!

That's exactly what I was talking about. You shouldn't find it for sale anywhere. It hasn't been made in decades.

Most are saving their Cortland for use only on certain cues. An early JW may qualify, but then you need somebody willing to sell the stuff.

Most cue makers aren't going to sell it to just any schmuck that comes along willing to pay.

I have a spool of Cuttyhunk #9 sitting right in front of me at this very moment. It's not for sale.

In general, you want to have a good relationship with a cue maker before you ask him about selling out of his personal stash of Cortland.

Put the word out that you want some. Talk to cue makers. Start trying to track it down. You may not get it right away, you may need to be patient.

If you are in a hurry then have it wrapped with some other linen and send it for a re-wrap when you land the Cortland.

But I wouldn't be in a hurry. Sure, you can send a Ferrari for a fresh coat of paint at the local "Earl Scheib" type place for $99....but do you really want to? Probably the minimum to paint such a car is around 10 grand.

You want a quickie/cheapie job on an old JW? Sell me the cue and buy something lesser. Just teasing. :D

In the mean time you might consider marrying into a cue maker's family...might increase the chance he'll sell you some of the good stuff....if he has any. Better make sure he has some before you marry his ugly duckling niece or something.
