THere was this stigma around pool "shhhh dont tell" for a long time because the old school hustlers didnt want anyone to know how they played.

From the threads Ive tired to read about aiming systems (tried- because i get so sick of the squabbling) there is a hole new breed.."Im not telling unless you pay me" (for information i got for free by the way) and you have to swear on your life you wont tell anybody..(Hold on Im laughing)

Ive paid for lessons, (in many games) but pool is the only one, I ever scene this attitude.

A great example, Im in room with 7 (not 1000) people and one teacher.. Its open question and answer (for free).. So i ask the guy a ?, he answers "oh i cant answer that its covered on day three of my class".. WHAT, everthing hes talking about is covered on day one.. so give away the crap but dont give away the good...I call B.S.

So my ? is who gives it away for free...

Example..Im in the poolroom a good onepocket player (Mike Z. they call him) is giving a lesson, hes talking so loud everybody in the place can hear and he spits out "The secret to bankshots is speed and english." Ill never forget it, and have told it to many.

Is what your doing good for you or good for the Game..

Pool Info.........

If ya check around, books and internet, you can almost find the answer to any question. Of course, this info is sometimes only worth the paper is it written on.:sorry: Without the knowledge to put what you know onto the pool table it is worthless. This is why good pool instructors are worth their weight in gold. They will point out what you are doing incorrect, sometimes things you never knew were wrong with your game.
So, paying a lil for a one on one lesson can sometimes pay itself off if you enter in tournies or gamble.:)

The problem with that secret is that it's about the same as the problem with another secret I know..... But I'll tell you the secret anyway ... it is, "to get to the moon, you have to build a spaceship".

Well, there ya go, now you know how to get to the moon. Oh, you wanna know how to build the spaceship too? Oh my, that's another whole new secret. :)

Very True and that attitude is still the holy grail of the gambling set.. they won't tell you how to be better they make you figure it out for yourself..

I don't like that aspect of pool and therefore am very free with what I know about the game to anyone who wants the information.

IME the best instructors realize that all the info in the world won't help anyone with basic fundamental flaws in their set up and delivery process..

and they cover that early in the training generally FIRST THING..

giving advanced info to someone who is unalbe to make good use of it.. leads to negative comments about how what they were told "Doesn't Work"

when in fact it works perfectly

the individual is just unable to implement it correctly...

you have to learn to walk before you can run..

Why do you guys have to be so difficult...you could have just cut through all the crap and said...You get to the moon on a spaceship! Give him the spaceship plans and we can watch Astronaut Farmer 2:grin:

Oh, but the plans will cost you 39.99

tucson9ball...Thank you for an informed and accurate post! There is, still, unfortunately, a lot of misinformation out there, in print, on video, and being taught by some folks who simply don't know what they're talking about.

softshot...AMEN! All the knowledge in the world won't help you much, if you don't have an accurate, repeatable setup and delivery system!

This is an interesting statement. First, I am not a professional instructor but I play pretty well - if anyone asks me a direct question about pool, and I know the answer, I answer it...for free. I love to do this. However, if someone wants an hour or more of my time to ask many questions or to help them work on their game in general, I charge (only $40/hr).

However, what I do not like is when people try to get information from a lesson in which someone else is paying for the lessons (from anyone). If they want to join in and the instructor doesn't mind they should at least offer to help pay for a portion of the lesson. It is not fair to the person paying for the lesson. In your case, you heard information given from a private lesson (even if the instructor was talking loudly) and it helped you. Is it now your information to spread around freely? Is it the student's? Is it the instructor's? My feeling, and this is only my feeling, is that the student can spread this information around if he chooses, he paid for it, and it's certanly the instructors right, but is it yours? No one spoke to you directly to give you that info - you kind of poached it.

However, I do agree with your point about helping spread the education around to help the sport, I just happen to believe it should be done by answering specific questions. It should not be expected to provide full blown lessons for free. If these professional instructors are making their livings teaching, that should be respected. I believe they have a lot to share and worth the investment.

Happy Thanksgiving!
