Who here has never ever E-V-E-R played league pool.....

I suspect this is one of those situations where someone has an opinion, and they want others to chime in and agree with that opinion, and any attempt to change their mind is a waste of time.

I have never played competitive chess, and I can see why some might not enjoy it, but I don't act like I'm PROUD to have never played competitive chess. Or question the fact that others would.

I'm one of those guys that used to look down on league play (APA, VNEA, BCA, etc). I now wish I had embraced them when I first started playing. Depending on where you live, they can be helpful to your pool game. While the actually time playing in the league may not be that beneficial to your physical game, there's a different sort of pressure that comes with playing in the short race/team environment, and I think this can really help your mental game, even if it's just on bar tables.

There's nothing quite like knowing your team is counting on you to run out. It's a small glimpse into what it must be like playing on the Mosconi Cup team.....I just can't imagine what that feels like. You manage to come through for a team a few times and it really gives you a different edge than you had before. It's different than playing for your self.

Played APA one session, made it to nationals. Where I live the APA league doesn't give you your money until you show up in Vegas.. I needed the money to GET to Vegas at the time so I couldn't go. They kept my money. :frown:

First I’ve been playing since 1965. Up until about a year and half ago I never played league. The closest I got was around 1967. There was a 14.1 league out of the room I played at and they were having an end season tournament. Somebody didn’t show and they asked me to fill in. And that was it for my league play.
Ok, so about a year and a half ago I was asked if I’d be interested playing BCA. They wanted me to commit to playing more than one session. I agreed and so off I went. I played for the remainder of the session and continued on for the next season. The team was definitely strong. We were all 9s with one 8. We came in second in each session. We had to give up points to the team that was finishing first. That was always tough to swallow.
The team I was on was way serious as were several other teams. I avoided league in the past due to the commitment that was needed. Now another factor entered into the equation; that being politics.
It came to the start of the new season (the team took summers off) and I got the phone call to see if was playing again. Well, it didn’t take me any time to let them know that I was out. A week later I got another call to see if I was interested if I was interested in playing the local “beer” league. …same response
The commitment end didn’t bother me too much since I am stable in one place now that I’m retired. In the past while I was working I didn’t know how long I’d be in town. One example is that there was once I was to go to New Orleans to fill in for about a week. I ended up being there for over a year. BUT, couple the commitment with the politics was too much. I’m OUT! No leagues again.

Team play, yes!

Well said.

I've been enjoying playing in leagues (not always, but mostly) since 1966 when I started one of the early 8-ball leagues.

I never have and likely never will because.....

1) Working 13 hrs/day doesn't allow for it

2) When I go to the pool hall I want to shoot, not spend a lot of time sitting around waiting to shoot

3) Although I enjoy seeing familiar faces, I don't shoot pool to socialize - for me it's an act of meditation

Hello, my name is Aaron, and I have never played league pool......

I have never even seen a league, let alone hit a ball. I am glad they exist and encourage ppl to play in them as its good for pool and for some its great fun. For me i'd rather get a root canal at a bad dentist than play a league game.

8pt Tad, i want to see a pic of it.

Cool story, take care

Eric :)

PS: We really would like to see the Tad, "We" meaning the cue junkies here on AZB-you know who you are....

why have'nt you ?

I've thought of joining many times, I think it would be extremely beneficial to my game. Unfortunately my work schedule has me traveling 100% of the time. So much, that after my divorce I have never gotten a permanent residence. I have been literally "homeless" for many years. I live in hotels and short term leases.

I tried to join twice, once in Maine 8 years ago, on a long job. And once recently. Just didn't work out. I have had to master the art of being a road player that doesn't play as strong as a "Real Road Player"

I can live with this. Your post implies that you have a negative opinion of league pool and yet you admit that you have never played in a league. Who wants to hang out with a close-minded, judgmental person?

What do you think your post implies about you?

On a side note:
Its interesting when I walk into a room Ive never been in before. All the gamblers ask "are you a road player"... the drug dealer will ask "are you a cop".... the manager of the place will ask "are you with ABC" and so on...

It seems that I have to overcome everyone's worst case scenario fear of who I may be, before anyone ever trusts me enough to even get a game....

The attempt of mockery towards league pool appears to be vague. The thought is it's mainly a shot at the APA but there are plenty of smaller leagues that offer competitive pool. There was a 14:1 league down in Denver I always wanted to play in that had some great local players competing in it. I placed 1st in a 10-ball league that paid for my entry and trip out to the Turning Stone Classic in New York. Not too shabby for "league pool". I guess I'm supposed to be ashamed about this . . .

Hello, my name is Aaron, and I have never played league pool......

What is this "league pool" you speak of?

There is eight bar boxs with in a 40 mile radius of me divided into four bars:frown:.

Yes pool is not big in a mountain resort.

Never have and probable never will, I live in western australia where no one plays nine-ball, only 2 pool halls even have nine ball tables that I know off. And apart from a few of my friends, no one even knows what nine ball is :(

Makes me sad because I know I would take the game alot more seriously and improve out of sight if only I had some people to play against.

I play the minimal amount of league play to be eligible to play in state tournaments. Not that I don't like league, but it's not as competitive as a tournament or heads up play.

Having watched league play, I see people having fun. Nothing wrong with that.

However, I've never played league. Medical issues mean I can't always be on a set schedule, and I'd hate to have people counting on me to be somewhere & then I couldn't make it.
