Jack Hines story

I was telling Dickie Todd about this thread and he offered up one of his favorite memories about Jack for you all. He had just sold Jack an old Dufferin Sneaky for 30 bucks. Well Jack was about to play Danny Harriman when Danny was running real good and Danny was getting all his high end stuff ready, screwing his break cue together, playing cue, you know the whole works... Well Jacks watching all this and walks over to Danny, shows him his cheapo cue he just bought and says "Danny, $29.95! It breaks, it jumps and runs out every time!" And then he backed it up..

I may have mentioned it earlier but I was there in Paducah for a Viking tournament back in the mid 90's. Danny H. and Jack had a very entertaining match in the losers bracket finals. Would love to hear Dannys version of the story in case I got the particulars wrong. The rack played a big part in the story.

Why hasn't someone collaborated with him to write an autobiography?? Surely, this would be a great roadie book if honestly written, and would make a great movie too. I think there would be substantial money in this, and, like The Hustler, would show the real underbelly of pool.

I had the same thought; that's been on my mind for a long time. I have a little essay written interspersing some of the stories I found on this very thread (just in pursuit of my own aesthetic interest, not publication) but obviously I don't have anywhere near enough material to justify a whole book, because I never knew the guy. If someone who does know him well wants to make me happy by sharing a few stories either through PM or over the phone, or had an inkling that Jack might want to randomly talk to a stranger about the various adventures and peccadilloes in his own life just to get them on the record, do get in touch; I think it would be a hell of a project, as rayjay mentions.

I've been here on AZB's for a couple of months now and I've met very interesting people, made some good deals and learned a lot about pool, but I have to say that this threat was the most amazing reading of all and that, if I had the chance to go to the U.S. and meet just one of the persons mentioned here, I'll choose Jack Hynes for sure.

I'll really appreciate if someone could give us all some update on how is he doing now and where is he. Also, does he know about his "celebrity status" here?

To finish, it has been said here but I have to say it again; someone has to write a book about him as soon as possible.

Thank you all for sharing your stories and for keeping this thread alive.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if someone had some "funding" that they could use to compensate Jack for his time, he could tell the stories that are in this thread and more. It might well be one of the most unique stories anyone would ever read.

I'm not in contact with Jack but I'm sure he is still around. You really couldn't expect Jack to tell story after story for hours on end without compensation. It is possible that he might consider sharing his time with someone who could reasonably compensate Jack. At least that's what I'm surmising.

You might want to change that plan!

No way, I'll trick him into playing me at $5 per game and I'll start talking with him about a guy I heard of who used to play with an iguana under his shirt and about all the other million stories that form his legend and, while loosing some money, I may get a glimpse of that wonderful player he was and, if I was lucky enough, maybe get some new first hand "On the Road Story" so I can tell my grandchildren "I met him once and you won't believe me but..."

That is one possibility!

I would love to know what Jack is doing today... I traveled with him on the road for about 6 months back in the late 90's... He has a good heart deep down but most will never see that side of him because he is so guarded.
