Who is Jack Hines?

Come on now..... After the cue ball was airborne, it changed it's path (in the air)?

Did it hit a light? Ohhhhhhhhh, maybe one of his lizards hit the cue ball with his tail and you didn't see it.:D

JoeyA

That is why i said that it was a mind boggling shot.

Yes, I do remember. Her name is Kelly S**** and Jack did her wrong. She was only 17 and was (and is) a sweet young lady that Jack turned into a drug addict. Then he dumped her and broke her heart. She carried a torch for him for a few years until she grew up and realized what a d***head he was. She rarely, if ever, mentions his name anymore.

Today, she is off drugs (for many years now), beautiful, healthy, and vibrant. She works as a branch manager for a local bank, and waitresses and bar tends the Jalapeno's Restaurant & Cantina. She plays a mean game of 8-ball and 9-ball and will bet it up on occassion. She is still single and looking for the right guy. Someone will get a great gal, there.

I thank u Tom for the info.I will note her name in my book. She is a sweetie pie and a very good pool player. If and when I go to Toledo I will look for her. Thanks once again

All very true..... Kelly lived in Columbus for a while and I agree with you on all counts. It's great to hear that she got right and is doing well. Tell her that Kirk from Cornfeds said hey and pass along my congrats on getting right and I wish her the best......

And for the record, Jack may be clean and good for him. But he has nearly 20 year of being a total P.O.S. to make up for! Quoting Cannonball, "No harm no foul, i realize that jack is not well liked from the prim and proper pool community". Cannonball, Jack is not even liked by most of the underbelly and gutter of the pool community....... It's going to take alot of money and do gooding for him to make things right. He had better watch "My name is Earl", learn about Karma and make a really long list! His list will be at least 5 times as long as Earls..........

I don't think $ an do gooding have much to do with Jack's situation with worldly forgiveness and or popularity. If he is saved by the grace of God then all of his his sins will be forgiven period, I understand it's been rough for Jack and I hope the next time I see him he his doing well spiritually. Sometimes it helps other people to feel better when they draw attention to others shortcomings, if your out there Jack I know your not all bad and I don't judge people on their IQ or ability to make a ball.

I'll pass the word along to Jack for you, Danny. He's trying to clean himself up, for that I can respect him as one of my uncles, and cousins, have ruined their lives due to drugs. Honestly, I've never heard of Jack until he came into town. I heard a bit about his ability on the table, that was about it. When I finally met him, he was very nice to me and even showed me a couple things on the table.

I don't believe he's looking for forgiveness from anybody, maybe he is and maybe he isn't, but at least he's trying to become a better person than all these horror stories on here. I, myself, will not judge another person because of their past. I've seen the good in him, and I've seen a bit of the temper, but until he does me wrong...I will consider him a friend, and an alright guy.

As Danny said, "If he is saved by the grace of God then all of his sins will be forgiven"...in the end, that's all that matters.

he busted everyone in town in due time."lots a papa" came in town ,i called hines and he came by and papa was ready to play until he seen hines and his words were f-you hines you took me for 5 grand in vagas. so they didnt play.if any one wants to see him play go to "youtube" and search for jack hines and youll see him playing strickland!any more questions just ask. thanks...

Not true. He could and did play with some of the best.
I have to agree with Tom, this guy could be in the HOF right now had he not got into the drugs. Jack lived with me for about 6-9 months in Toledo so I got to know hm quite well. Someone here mentioned he had a good heart, I saw that first hand when we would go visit his grandmother sometimes and eat with her. I was at the Akron Open watching the finals when Jack played Earl. Jack had him 10-9 going to 11 (I believe, either way Earl was two games away from the hill and Jack was on the hill) and played a dead nut safe on Earl with only the 7, 8, and 9 left on the table. Earl kicks the cue ball 3 rails and thin cuts the 7 down the long rail and runs out the rack and breaks and runs the next rack for the win. This would have been Jack's first major tournament win. He was crushed when that happened and it seemed everything went down hill from there. Jumpin Rerack Jack, I still have yet to see a player anywhere that could put as much draw stroke on a ball as Jack. He was jumping balls long before the "Jump Cue" with his Schon R2 and could do it better than most now can with a jump cue. I hear a lot of bad stories and a lot of them are probably with just cause. But if you were close with Jack then you got to know him on another level.

Im not sure if Tom rememers a guy named "Poke" from the ship n shore lounge or not but we used to go down in Poke's basement and play pool for hours and hours at a time. We did this drill on the table with all 15 balls which allows you to continue shooting as long as you dont miss. My self and Poke would have to go before Jack because the guy would not miss a ball for hours. Now I know everyone has their big fish story, I just wish video cameras were more abundant then because there were hours and hours of valuable footage that would be a treat for anyone to watch these days.

I havent seen him in almost 20 years and I hope he is still jumping balls somewhere.

Thanks

Jack Hynes, well no he didn't get killed at a halfway house during hurricane katrina.

I've personally known Jack Hynes for about 12 years. I think i got to know him better than anyone on the planet.

The first time i saw him he was playing my brother Country Calvin (Harcrow) , and beating Calvin races to 9 even on the bar box, at that time Calvin was still a World Beater!

Most all the things posted on this thread about Jack are true, he did have this thing with (perfection), hated to lose a game, or make a bad position play, he would lose his temper very easily, but usually at just him self.

Jack had a very serious motor cycle accident in New Orleans about 5 years ago, broke his leg in half, well him being with no insurance the hospital wanted to amputate his leg, tore his rotor cup in his shoulder, but he somehow talked them into trying to save his leg, they operated on him and put his leg into a cast , did nothing with his shoulder, wrote off the bill, and sent him on his way.

He came limping to my house in Texarkana, Texas (at the time I let all the Road Players stay at my house when they passed thru town)

Jack stayed about 6 weeks then left town, he eventuly got to where he could walk ok, but his shoulder never did get much better, couldn't straighten out his arm, it was kinda limpy. So i guess you could say his pool playin days were gone.

He would stop by from time to time but never really tried to play pool at all anymore.

The last time i saw Jack Hynes was December,2006......he was on his way to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. About 6 months ago a friend of mine from Houston, was told by (Good Time Charley) from Louisiana that Jack had gotten killed! Where at or how , i don't know.

Jack was a really good person at heart! , but was a loner and wouldn't let someone get close to him, he wouldn't give most people the time of day, you either had to put up or shut up!

Most all of the Top Players, and anyone in general hated his guts, you know why? because they were envious of him, because they couldn't win!......well tell it like it is , its true.

Jack went to the Super Bowl Tournament in Memphis, Tn. about 7 yrears ago, won it handily, went to JOB tourney the next week, won it, then went to Tunica,Miss. and won it too.......all in a 3 week span.........and you all know that the calibar of players at those tournaments were something fearce

Jack Hynes did strive to be the best, but in the end he got a bad roll!!!!!!
He let the alure of drugs get him!, so if any of you younger players are reading this and your doing drugs , or around drugs, their NO GOOD! it will eat you up like a CANCER!, and take away everything you ever dreamed of!, run from anyone that has anything to do will drugs!

I liked Jack, didn't like what he became.

.......don't know if Jack is alive or dead?...but he'll aways be my friend and have my respect for being one of the Greatest Pool Players i ever met!

.......i've known and know a lot of um'........and he was one of um'!!!!:)

.......thats my 2 cents!

That is a horror match of horror matches. It ranks up ther with the match between Efren and Earl where Efren shoots the table length Z shot and pockets the five ball and gets shape on the next ball to win the game and if I'm not mistaken, the match. :thud:

JoeyA,

You are correct he did win the match after making that shot, it is almost an identical story with Earl being the common thread in both situations. Earl has won that way and lost that way? Kind of bittersweet......

For every high there is a low.

I met Jack a few times. He was hanging out at Rusty's in Arlington for a few weeks. This was back when I practically lived there. So I got the opportunity to play him a few times and watch him play others. The guy could shoot, no doubt. He also knew a lot of pretty neat trick shots and showed me a ton after I beat him on one of his tricks.

He was definitely a character. Two stories I recall...

One night in Rusty's he says that he can pitch at least one quarter out of a roll into a pitcher that was sitting on a table. The distance was at least 25+ feet. First off the ceilings in Rusty's are low. He set the pitcher on the table right below and next to a light that hangs low. If you could see the setup in person it looks impossible. I bet against him once and learned my lesson quick. About 5 pitches in he makes one. It's not graceful looking at all. It looks like total luck and no skill. The building started to fill up and because there is this guy throwing quarters at a pitcher across the room, people start to take notice. Buy the end of the night he is robbing the whole bar and everyone is having a good time just watching and betting on it. The bet gradually glot tougher as it was clear he has done this before. It started to go 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. out of a roll of quarters. Amazing to see a single guy get an entire bar gambling on something so ridiculous.

Next time I saw Jack was in Houston at a tournament. He open the bid on himself with something like $700 lol. I think he barely sold for $800. He plays Jeremy Jones and Jack missed and starts racking the balls. It wasn't like it was the 8 ball. It was something like the 4 ball. Then Jeremy broke and made a ball. The table is wide open and Jack starts racking. He continued this for pretty much the whole set and I think it still went double hill. He made it to the second day and didn't even show.

Get's the 5 ball at table 2 at Hi Q

First time I met jumping Jack was on table 2 at Hi Q billiards right next to New York Carpet World on Monroe St, he offered the 5 and I took him off for all the money he had, which turned out to be nothing. lol
I love Jack Hines, one straight shooter was he, too bad about his head. That was a long time ago, I really enjoyed this thread. Lizard on his back? Why that is just crazy enough to be true when it comes to Jack. Some of you probably know me, but I am not too keen on letting you know who I was. Scraping balls off the table to concede games? Yeah that is Jack, don't let your opponent get in stroke. Is Jack still alive? Jack lived life fast, lose and hard like his game. More to come ...

by the way this thread sounds I may have really gotten off the hook about seven or eight years ago. there was a young guy from kentucky that came to town to play some. the guy they had been hearing about was ALWAYS broke. he asked me to stake him and I declined because he was already pretty deep in my pocket. The player ends up matching up with me and beats me out of a couple hundred giving me the eight on a bar table. well as we all know everyone has a guy and the guy with him mentions jack. I told that I didnt know of Jack and that if he wanted to come play I would get Buster Merchant out of retirement. He called me a couple time and the game never happened needless to say I feel pretty fortunate after reading this. (keep in mind Buster had not been playing hardly any when we were trying to get this game done)

i spent a lot of time around jack hines in the late 80s and early 90s, and yes he was a great player with tons of talent, great shotmaker with a big break but also the biggest jerk in pool. away from pool he seemed like a nice guy though. anyways i was in the finals with him in a nine ball tournament and i had to beat him two sets. we didnt have much time because the director warned us we couldnt play after 2 am. altough jack was a better player then me i beat him the first set 7-6 and i was winning the second set 6-1 at ten minutes to two. now jack goes and sits in the bathroom and tries to stay there until 2 because then we would have to split the prize money. there was a big difference between first and second. i remember telling the director that it isnt right what jack is doing but what could anybody do, anyways they declared me the winner and after that about the next 5 times i faced jack he would shark me every chance he got, try to start arguements. i also saw a player upset him in a bar table tournament playing loser breaks and jack would throw the quarters at him so hard that the poor guy had to pick them up off the floor after trying to find them. so many times he would be in big arguements with whoever he was playing. i was told by one of his ex girlfriends that him being a jerk was just an act, he thought he had to act that way towards his opponents for some reason. and that is some of my jack hines stories. yes it is true that the drugs did ruin this guy. if he had a good head on his shoulders he probably would have made it close to the top.

I might as well throw in my experience with Jack Hines. He rode up to Spirit's Bar & Grill in Little Rock on a motorcycle from Fort Smith, AR (130 mile drive). It was a freezing cold January night and was still sleeting outside. He walked through the door soaked to the bone, his hands, face and ears were beet red. Within 15 minutes, we were matched-up. He pulled a piece of lumber off the wall and proceeded to put a 9 pack on me on a very tight 9 footer. The whole time he was running around the table, steam was coming off his wet clothes. Jack running out on me didn't bother me as much as a buddy of mine sweating the match saying "This guy is smok'in".

He had soooo much talent. What a waste, what a shame.
