Who is Jack Hines?

Jack Hines

He played a few months in my room in Huntington WV. Probably one of the best unknown breakers in the WORLD. Learned to play with Bucky Bell in Cincy OH. Personally watched him run 22 racks playing 9 ball ghost on 8ft gold crown. Played, broke, and jumped with older Schon cue. We have had several great players in our rooms...Shannon Daulton,Cliff Joyner,Corey Deuel,Charlie Williams,Shawn Putnam,Niels Feijen,Larry Price,Dave Grau,George San Souci,Danny Basavich, and Travis Stamper to name a few.... NONE of them gave up the weight that Jack gave up to our best players(standing offers for months) while winning 95% of the games he was in. Most say he threw the ones he lost...he never "threw" me...everyone said I was VERY lucky . Not much of a person to be around and trust....but TRULY an amazing breaker and shotmaker. I have been Around good players since the 70's...Jack is probably the most under rated and unknown player I have ever been associated with.

Jack Hines.......

When i lived in Ohio, Cincinnati to be exact...i played fulltime at Michael's Billiards in Fairfield. Jack Hines showed up one day, and ended up staying for about a year. It was obvious he had drug issues, and some major trust flaws, but he was an unbelievable player. To this day, perhaps the very best shotmaker i have ever witnessed. And i have seen most, and played many of them. His stroke was unrealistically powerful and his focus nearly unmatched when he was "right". lol.
I remember, when he first came in, we all had heard of him, but hadn't really seen him play much, so i immediately wanted to take a shot at him. (being young, and confident......and dumb lol.) I asked how we could play some, and he immediately offered me the 6 out, for $50 a set, races to 7....for something to pass the time. I won the first 4 sets and got the air-biscuit. lol. I really didn't make much of it, as i was pretty pumped at the time, and over the next several months, he always offered to buy me coffee at the poolroom, and was a wealthspring of information when it came to improving my game.

The Story.......
Michael's Billiards has since moved to the old Walgreens building next to its old locale, but used to be located next door, above a salon and a Papa John's Pizza. After Jack hed been in town for a few weeks, he decided to get a job at the Papa John's, and sleep in the poolroom. As it turned out, he'd only procured the gig so he could get a few free employee shirts! He was fired from the job, and wore the pizza-shirts around to different bars and poolrooms and made them part of his hustle! LOL! Guys would come in and play him $2-$5-$10 9-ball and 8-ball, thinking he was a pizza-delivery-guy, without a clue that he was one of the best players in the world. However, the most irritating thing about his stay, was that while Jack was in the poolroom, he stuffed cash in the jukebox, and played "I Missed The Bus" and "Jump Jump" by Kris Kross CONSTANTLY! It was and still is the most awful music in the world! But he couldn't be without it! It sucked! LOL :p

Watching him practice was amazing. He worked on all parts of his game tirelessly. He was a great player, that....as many others have said and i agree....would have had a HUGE future in the game had he not been addicted to drugs.
As his time at Michael's passed, many other things happened and he ended up on the run. Drug issues, Some guys chasing him down over is treatment of a young lady, trying to sell rolls of washers to a local bank.....ETC....
It was a real shame, he had talent that is God-given. A true natural at the game.
I was an everyday and night regular at Michael's, and saw these things firsthand, and it only got worse.

If you are out there Jack, good luck to you.....oh, and............................ where's my $200?!
LOL!

Brandon Lee Spitler.

If I see him riding around on his motorbike, I promise to do my best not to run over him.
P.S. Correct spelling - Jack Hynes.

At the Cleveland tournament long long ago, Jack was playing Ed Kelly. Both had been imbibing in their choice of accelerants and neither was in a mood for BS. When push came to shove I had to step between them and tell them to resume the match. After it was over they met in the hallway and blows were delivered. Kelly looked relatively unscathed afterwards (but still inebriated) and Jack was no where to be found. Maybe licking his wounds. :sorry:

Was that the 1st annual Cleveland 10 ball classic?

Yes it was.

I was there with Lee and I remember coming in from the parking lot and Jack walking past me in the lobby area and looked real pissed. I asked what was up and he just went on by. LOLz, I always heard he got in a huff over something with Buddy Hall and he got kicked out of the tournament.

you tube has him playin earl in late 80s. I played him back then and he was a world beater when his chemicals were right. He was never a good person. He invited me to the parking lot in Houghton Lake Mi but got his jaw knocked lose before he got that far.Jack is was and will always be the scum of scum.

The Jack I Knew....

I have not personally seen jack for several years now but am pleased to learn via these posts that he is still out there kickin' around. I not only know him.... I traveled the road with him several different times. What has been said about him being a truly colorful character is the understatement of all understatements!! He had and I'm sure still has any of many character flaws you could name but if you ever were a real friend of his any wrongs that he may do he would strive to make right if you would let him. No, I wouldn't necessarily want my son to grow up to be like him but I would love for my son to be as smart as him! Say whatever you like...... but I would bet my bottom dollar that Jack's I.Q. was(pre drug abuse era) well in excess of 180. A shining example of his intelligence........ once while we were on our way thru southern Texas and coming up on Houston we got into a conversation about chess. I just happened to have a Gary Kasperov chess master digital board in my stuff in the trunk( and yes we were traveling with his then-girlfriend Kim and those damn dogs!!). When I reminded him of that board being in the trunk he immediately pulled over and asked me to get it..... so I did. He proceeded to have me set it on its highest level which ( according to its literature ) had it playing at the same level as the then world chess champ it was named after. So I did and he placed it on the seat between he and I and quickly checkmated the computer (maybe 8 minutes it took him) set it back up and beat it AGAIN! All this while driving 90 mph thru Houston rush hour traffic!!! And for those of you who never saw him really play....... Jack at his best could and would give any living human a helluva run for their money on a pool table bar none. I've seen darn near all of the best play and Jack was capable of putting the fear of God in them when he got going. Few of them would admit it, though.
Yes, Jack's drug problem soared to unimaginable heights beginning around '98 or so and progressively got worse. Happy to hear rumors of him being clean though. He is a true throw-back to the days of the old time hustlers. I would really like a chance to shake his hand and wish him well all over again to a future with no drug use in it for him.

Nice post. Now I know what game I should challenge Jack to play; aging. Oh that's right he's moving pretty quick on that front too. lol

I don't mind saying that I like his candor.

all the old stories are really fantastic. w/o having to read every single post in the thread is jack still alive? i heard he was playing at bogies not long ago this year in fact. I would have to think that he would go to steve miz championship with all the great caliber players in attendance there.

WOW!!! Just WOW!!!

I have read a lot of stories from this forum and a lot of books but I have never read so many bits and pieces from so many people where one encounter was better than the next in all my life. This was a post that kept me going from start to finish and it was backed up by video. All I can say is Great post!!! This guy had Earl holding his head, covering his face and he only missed one shot...just one shot that he should have made where as Earl lost shape and missed easy shots. The dry breaks are really what killed him in this set.

Thanks to all of you for your contributions.

Yep, Jack is indeed a living legend. I hope he shows up around Toledo, a lot of people miss him.

Bob Jewett 2-times-fuller used on this shot.

at 9:25 Jack used Bob Jewett's 2-times-fuller method to make this shot? Who was the person that taught Jack how to shoot? This is now one of the top videos that I like to see now next to Gay vs Allen 1998 World One Pocket.

Just curious who he is and where he is from...

Jack was/is an excellent player who needs an attitude adjustment. Probably a nice guy underneath but is hard to see thruout all the turmoil he's brought on all by his lonesome. Have played him a few times and seen his antics many times

Considering his abilities at the table, I'd wish him all the best regardless of his disposition

I just returned from my camping/hunting trip for the last two months today and see that Jacks names is still on the lips of those who know and don't know him.

You know there's not a damn thing wrong with Jack, he never wronged me or any one else , if you came out on the loosing end of an encounter with him, your just not on top of things thats all.

I ran into a buddy of mine that is an old schooler while camping and he spoke of Jack, he said he was the most amazing run out pool player/ hustler/ crook/ and likeable guy he ever met, said you just gotta like him and I agreed.

I know what what you mean Billy, those weenie dogs and his girlfriend Kim were all one could stand, Kim was just shy, and the dogs shit everywhere in my house, but ,...it's all good.

I remember one time at the Rack Tournament in Memphis , Kim came in about nine o'clock at night and sat down at the table where I was watching Jack play , she was dressed in a hooker out fit and purple painted eyes, the owner came over and said " excuse me , but your kind is not welcome in here" Jack over heard and told him that it was cool , she was his wife!.................
the owner said I apologize sir!, even tho she wasn't she looked the part.

I don't think Jack will ever quit doing drugs completely, but he fights with those demons ever day, he's had a hard life and I believe he was meant to make my acquantance, believe it or not he once found Jesus Christ in his heart while in jail, and I tried to explain what my thoughts where and told him that he can be foregiven of all his transgressions.

Jack I wish you well buddy!

You don't know shit from shine-ola!

Jack never wronged anyone unles he felt you were getting over on him, and I doubt seriously you knocked a jaw loose , because he would have planted a beer bottle up side your head way before you got that close, he can read your EYES just like the rest of us!

I don't know if he was his mentor or not but I know he was on a League team with Harry "Poochie" Sexton at one time and that old guy could play !
