Well, the odds are in for the upcoming World Pool Championship, beginning July 2, 2005. I'd love to know who's making the odds at Stan James! Some of these numbers are quite interesting.

I wish I could provide a tout sheet, but I'll be honest. I don't know how 50-plus percent of the players listed play! :p

However, I do think they got the Americans players' odds a little off, and it may be a good opportunity to drop a small bet and win a little chunk of change!

Last year, my brother, who knows nothing about pool, said he saw the WPC on his betting website and asked me who I thought would win it. I had already known that Alex Pagulayan was 19 to 1 (I think, or close to it). My thrifty brother bet $2 and won. He was kicking himself, wishing he had bet more! :D

For my dough, based on my limited knowledge of this field, I like Italian Fabio Petroni for 150 to 1. I've seen him play fairly recently on a few occasions, and he's hitting 'em good, always placing in the money. That's my long-shot pick! Kid Delicious is 150 to 1 and may be another one to place a small wager on! I like them odds! :p

Putnam at 200/1? Holy shit what a steal. That there is a mistake by a person who has not done his homework.
 
After a cursory review once more, I looked at the player roster and had only heard of 48 or so players before. When I got to the 500-to-1's and 750-to-1's, I didn't recognize any of the names.

Three Philippinos head the list -- Efren, Alex, and Bustie! :p -- and then they have a group of American players all rated in the same odds brackets.

I was pleased to see Ernesto Dominguez's name on the list. They have him rated the same as Kid Delicious and John Schmit! But I don't think any of these guys should be 150 to 1! :eek:

The long flight for the American players is a bummer, but after speaking to a couple of them last year, they said it did not hinder their performance.

Niels Feijen is a strong contender in this field. He is quite comfortable traveling abroad and brings his best game to the table. He's come in third place 2 years at the U.S. Open in recent times. He may be the best pick of the lot for the odds (IMO).

Danny Basavich, though, is the best bang for the buck!

Looking at the odds, I wonder how they were derived, whether gathered from statistics acquired from tournaments within the last year or somebody's independent knowledge of the players' strengths.

Jam,

Good thoughts. But "Kid" rarely takes off the big ones. I'm gonna wager about $50 on various players. I like Archer as a favorite (he's on right now), and Shaun as a long shot. I also like Lining at 80:1.

It's legal, Wahcheck! I haven't registered on this particular website, but if it is like the others, it should be a piece of cake. You must, though, provide your credit card info in order to get down.

Funny thing is that these odds have changed since I initiated this post. Alex Pagulayan is now 8 to 1, as opposed to 9 to 1 earlier this morning! :D

It may be a good thing to get the bets down early before the odds change. :p

Danny Basavich is a good bet (IMO). He's been to the WPC before and knows the set-up. Because of his recent good fortune relating to the upcoming book and movie deal, I believe he'll be on a mission to snatch this title. When Danny competes in tournaments, whether it's a regional event or a high-profile championship, he always gets proper rest and prepares for battle. If he catches a gear, he'll get there in the top three.

Just out of curiosity, as I haven't done my research, are there any seeds in the WPC, or are names randomly picked out of a hat?

You know at 200/1 I kinda like Nick Varner. I realize he hasn't been playing in the last few years but maybe he is back. It would be nice to see and the odds are great.

First of all the players are placed in groups of 6 or 8 (can't remember) and they play a round robin to see who advances to the 64-man single elimination stage. I think the original groups are seeded.

AZBer "sniper" would know. He follows this more closely than I do.

Alex just beat Bustie at the recent P1 Million--[what is that?]--All-Philippino Championship, and the article on AzBilliards Main Page says that Bustie was making a whopping 4 balls on the break, working with a new technique he just incorporated into his game. :eek:

Fabio at 150 to 1 is a steal. He's been making the money rounds consistently in very recent times, and he's capable of taking this one off.

The Americans have their hands full with the upcoming WPC. Out of all of the players representing the U.S., I gotta go with Kid Delicious and Johnny Archer. If Johnny or Danny is on, they will get there. I'm betting a sawbuck on each one quickly before those odds change!

Great point Todd. John Schmidt at 150-1 is a joke. After watching Thorsten play this past week I believe that he is the best player in the world right now. His confidence level is through the roof and he knows how to battle himself back into a match. I'd also take some of that 125-1 on Mike Davis. After losing the finals match to Johnny Archer Sunday night. Mike waited about an hour and got right back on table 23 and started playing again. I left at 1:30 AM and he was still shooting and looking very strong.
