Who is the best in the US?

As this week is obviously a time for new ideas... here is mine:

Everyone likes to discuss who is the best player at this game or that game. Everyone complains that anyone can win in a short race format. Players like to match up to have a true test of their abilities and to win alot more cash. Would a tournament work that played a long race format or ahead set with a large entry fee.

My thoughts would be for all the bar table monsters to put up at least $2,000 each and play single elimination 12 ahead sets or races to 50. I know this could take days, but the winner could net over $30,000 and truely prove to be the best. Another option would be to award the winner of each set $1,000, essentially making each set worthwhile. The remaining $1,000 from each eliminated player would then be added to the final winner-take-all pot.

This doesn't seem like an outlandish proposition for a backer or player if they truly believe they are the best. I know this could take a very long time, but the side action could be tremendous and by paying the winner of each set, there would be money to cover their traveling expenses.

SVB wins this format all day long. Good idea fo a tournament though.

i mentioned something like this in another thread but you elaborated on it nicely..... i would prolly play if it was 10 ball on a 9 ft table

There is the idea that one player would frighten all others from not ponying up such a large amont, but paying for each elimination would allow a much higher percentage of at least making your money back. Or you could bar certain players. The tournament could then be called...

The Best Player in the US that is not Shane Van Boening Tournament

The best in the US right now....

I think it has to be Shane Van Boening especially after what he did to Cory and Earl in the TAR matches. He went through the US Open undefeated and that's no easy task. Any of the top pros can beat the other players on a given day, but Shane is at the top right now IMO.

I think this would make for a fantastic tournament to sweat. Getting a bunch of bar box monsters together would ensure some exciting play. You're right in that it would be a huge time commitment, but I bet there would be plenty of people up for it...especially because there would be plenty of side action to be had after people got eliminated or between sets.

This would be a great tournament to watch. At an entry like 2K and with decent length races I think you would get just about all of the good bar table players to take a stab at decent payday. And fwiw, the fact that it is on bar table virtually eliminates anyone from being the clear cut favorite. JMO

Sounds great.

Here is how I would do it. 128 players @ $1000 entry. Race to 25 10 ball bar table. Winner break. Single Elim. Play two sets a day(long days, but only way to do it with time) Winner of each set gets $500.

There wound be 127 matches @ $500 = $63500. That leaves $64500 left to pay the top four. 1st=30000, 2nd=20000, 3rd=10000, and 4th=4500, plus all your match wins. You could get this event done in 4 days. You could have an am. tourney after day 1 when some of the tables open up.

I would definately play something like this.

How in the world can you bar players and then find out who the best is?

taking out say one pocket, banks, and straight, where he hasn't proved himself yet, who is favourite over shane in the world right now at nine ball or especially ten ball?

pagulayan is one of the players who would stand a chance, and he beat him twice.

i just think nobody is hitting them quite like shane is at the moment.

pagulayan beat svb the last 5 times they've played.

others include efren, warren, van van, dennis, ronnie, yang, niels to name a few...

If you really want to know who is the best, single elimnination won't do it. You need a round robin tournament. For example- 40 people, 20 tables, 2,000 'entry', race to 20, 4 matches per day for ten days, $50 per match, winner and the best is the guy with the most money at the end. You keep what you won. $ matches per day involves some stamina, figuring 1-2 1/2 hrs. per match. Too many are capable of beating each other on any given day to have single elim. Doesn't make for a huge payday, but a very good weeks pay, and a true champion. Then HE is the one to beat for the 'title' on TAR or whatever.

Don't know why in the number of matches per day it shows a dollar sign when I submit it. It shows a four before I submit???

sounds good to me

The race to 20 doesn't really show it either, although I do agree that Round Robin definitely has advantages. You will notice though that I did not post any second place payout, and with single elimination extremely long races, the best player should win. I am not talking about a race to 7 or even 20. If a player wins a race to 50 or 12 ahead, it is not likely they would lose the next time.

This is a great idea. Bar table 9 ball or 10 ball is pretty exciting to watch. This would make for a good attendance in sweaters. Its is an equalizer. There are plenty of players out there that can put a number of racks together in either game on a bar table. Some players would have a obvious advantage over other players due to the longer race but if someone got a good draw they could make some cash because of being paid after each win. I like this idea.
