MINDS WANT TO KNOW!!!!!!!!!

Having recently dealt with one myself (actually still going through it, more details shortly) I am interested in knowing what experiences others here in the AZ Family have had with shady dealers and what you did about it?

Is your question referring to shady cue makers or dealers ???

Oh, no, lemme guess....you ordered a custom cue, paid for it and never got it or you had a cue repaired, paid for it and never got it back...I know someone who is notorious doing that kind of stuff.........call the cops

I don't think we want to go down this path...

I doubt very seriously that anyone would reply to this, it would start a flame war and we have one of those going as I type this.

This has also been addressed in the past to no avail. I thinnk that if you have had a bad experience, then post it as just that. Be prepared to get both negative and positive feedback...

Let the more coming now instead of going on a fishing trip with your thread title.

Good luck.

MrLucky,
I actually think this is a fine topic for a thread. Nothing wrong with a discourse on the buying and selling of potentially stolen merchandise.

In high school my cue and soft case were stolen at the local pool hall while I was in the bathroom. A few weeks later I go to the local cue dealer to replace it - and lo and behold there is my cue in his display case for sale (same chip on the butt, I KNOW it's mine), case is gone. Of course all I heard was the same "No, I can't remember who sold it to me, I buy and sell so many cues. Just show me some proof of ownership and I'll be happy to return it to you... blah, blah, blah." Police report including description was not good enough for this guy - police didn't care at all. Do I sound bitter?? It was probably a less than hundred dollar cue (but my prized possession - few of my friends had a 2-piece cue), it happened 37 years ago, but if I saw that cue dealer today on the sidewalk, I'd probably swerve and try to drive over his foot if I could.

I always find it self-serving when cue dealers/collectors start complimenting one another about their integrity and honesty (I would believe it more readily coming from a used car dealer, since his merchandise is less likely to be stolen). Just because a lot of nice people engage in this hobby/profession does not make it any more reputable.

At least these guys aren't as bad as the art dealers (who deal in works much more expensive than cues). A friend was in Chicago, looking for a Boulanger, was referred to a large art dealer and told, "well, you have to prove you are not a cop, then ask to see the works in the special back room." Those guys are REALLY sleazy.

P.S. - for those who take offense, realize that if you are a gun/art/cue dealer that you are an official member of a group dealing with potentially stolen merchandise. I find it ironic that we all commiserate with a forum member who has had a cue stolen, then we berate the thieves as evil slime; then we congratulate the guy who just picked up his used Balabushka for a song on e-bay. Just an observation on the vagaries of stolen property - wouldn't it be nice if all used cues came with a title like a house or a car???

There is this guy Koop who is a real sleaze ball. He steals from old people and beats up the handicapped. Just a heads up to stay away from him.

Regards,
Koop

I guess I've been lucky. I've dealt with several cuemakers and have found nothing but honesty and integrity among the lot. Yeah, a time or two they've been a little behind schedule, but not that much and the product was usually well worth the wait when it arrived.

Later,
Bob

Dale Perry. I purchased a cue from him off ebay, it was supposed to be 2nd day shipping and I didn't get the cue for two weeks. He told me he had trouble tapering them to the size I wanted. I finally got the cue, but the two shafts did not fit the cue. One shaft was warped and both of them had extremely poor wood quality. The way he tapered the shafts was terrible also, I told him I didn't want a straight taper, but he did anyways. He told me to ship them back to him and he would replace them immediately, and personally check them himself. I sent them back and didn't hear from him for almost 3 weeks. Turns out he didn't replace the shafts, he just fitted them to the cue, and the warped one he must have soaked it and hung it for a few weeks to straighten it out. The end result is that shaft hits like crap, and one of the shafts still doesn't match the cue, the ring sticks out when you screw it together. After I told him about that he just flat out ignored me. I even warned him that I was not going to leave him good feedback if he didn't explain to me why he lied and did not replace the shafts like he said he would. He continued to ignore me, so I left him neutral feedback, even though I felt he deserved negative. He wouldn't even reimburse me for shipping the cue back to him.

Last Two,

You must be a really nice guy....if it were me, I'd definitely give him as negative a feedback as I can, and also post on all the pool forums on the internet!

Believe me, I wanted to...but I didn't want to destroy his reputation. Whatever damage he recieves from my feedback or talking about this in public, he deserves. He lied to me twice and ignored me, all he cared about was making the sale. If that bastard has just replaced the shafts like he promised, I would have been happy, but he lied and pretended like he replaced them. I recognized the crappy wood grain pattern on both of them, and they are definately the same shafts. I cant believe he gave me the shaft back that was warped. Argh it makes me mad to think about it, but theres not much more I can do. Supposedly my cue retails at $1800. The quality of wood he used in those shafts would be suitable for an $80 cue, yes it was that poor.

Now aren't you pissed that you didn't listen to be in the beginning and follow through with what was planned? However, depending on the weight of that butt, if I were you I would go with a McDermott I.C.E. shaft or Smart shaft, universal joint. Sure, you'll have to spend some money, but it'll work out.
The weight of those two shafts are very different, so it's imperative that you know what you want in weight and balance in the end.

Well LastTwo, under both a utilitarian view and a moral rights view, the public DESERVES to know this!!! Which is why I'm glad you posted your experience....honestly I was contemplating a DP myself cos they're cheap, and also cos 2 of my buddies use DPs and really like them.

I guess right now most things have come to pass and you've already made a decision not to pursue the matter too much....I hope you'll have luck selling that cue, but probably not on this forum though! ;)

Dale Perrys hit very good and they are very nice looking cues, but the customer service sucks, plain and simple. If you bought one you would be satisfied, just so long as you don't go thru any of the bullshit I went thru.

Yeah I should have just stuck with the original plan
