With 2009 now upon us I realize that real pool action has began to fade.Who killed action?Let me point this out.
The man who gets staked only to dump the match for 50%..
U killed action!!!!
The man who bet's his own while stealing only to lose someone else's money in a tough spot....
U killed action!!!!!
The people who could give a damn bout the backer's money when they play...
U killed action....
The man who wins 10,000 today and wont even put up 50 of his own tomorrow...
U killed action!!!!!

Now I claim to be no saint at all.Everyday I walk in the pool hall with my head high only to realize at the end of the night that as a pool player, gambling in itself is bullshit..I know people are reading this right now(some my friends as well)and I know they have took part in dumping and things of that nature.Well even as my friend I must tell u, that u have killed action!!!I have good honest hard working people who are willing to be on me and if I was to blow 5000 today I may only be able to bet 300 for the next 2 months.I respect these people for everything they do and appreciate it greatly.I have never dumped a sole, I let the same people bet on me even if I have the stone lock and if I lose a match u can bet that every penny I have in my possession was in the fire right along with theirs. It seems that these people who killed action are taking money out of the pool hall everyday.I have seen numerous players who at even up to 3 balls below me get staked for thousands and dump just to have stakehorses find out and not return to the pool hall out of sheer disgust.I take no part in any of this but still I feel the effects...

I woke up this morning and this was in my head for some reason so I decided to post..Thanks to people like Theactionreport.com, it seems they have tried to give gambling mouth to mouth and though it seems to have brought back some life....It is still breathing it's last breath as we speak.....
Action seems to be dying ...Don't expect to see me charged with murder...And dont expect to see me at the funeral....

Thank You David Parker

If you bet your own and not looking for a backer you can always find action. I can get action "anytime" I go in the pool room. (That doesn't mean that all of the games I could "get" are necessarily good for my bankroll, but they are there)

Matt_24 <--Has to bet his own...not good enough for a backer.

I have a different opinion

David, I think action is down because we don't have a new generation of pool players. Nobody to come and take on the old action players. I walk into the poolroom and it is the same people all the time no new blood. When I started playing in 89 there was an old crew and a young generation of pool players and we would square off all the time.

Now it seems the young guys turned into the old guys and there are no more young guys who got any gamble. Yes, there are great young players but not nearly as many as last generation. Most of the great young players are from overseas and don't gamble they just exercise, practice and kick our ass in tournaments.

I also believe the internet and cell phones killed action. Nobody can sneak up on anybody anymore, so it isn't even worth making a road trip. Everybody is already knocked before they come into town. When I was young and hanging in NYC people would come from all over to play and sometimes you would have a line on the guy and sometimes you wouldn't. Sometimes you just had to play and see where you stood. Today the guy walks in somebody runs to the internet or snaps a picture on his cell phone and texts to his friend for a read on the guy. It is brutal.

Hey David,

I think you were born during the wrong era. You would have had lot's of fun many years ago. There was a different crowd altogether and a different creed among the players.
Action is down for lot's of different reason and what you speak is truth, no doubt. I don't think it will ever be back.
SUre enough, there is lot's of dumping going on and way too many savers and those sorts of things. Today's players just aren't going to take chances the way we did.
Another thing hurting the action is that there aren't as many living in the pool room like it was 15-20-25 years ago. Most realize there isn't that kinid of cash around to be made and the bets have stayed about the same. There was a day that $100 sets were considered good action and dbecause of economic times, it don't mean suat now.
That fiasco that happened in your town a while back with the guy winning $35000 , getting paid and then blowing back $25000 and stiffing the guy, that hurts action badly too. Why anybody on the planet would match uup with that guy is just beyond me.
I will say this, I like your attitude and the way you conduct yourself. You are respectful, but don't take much crap. You will stand up and fire.

I agree with the above, but I would like to add the following:

Before leagues, before VCR, before instructional books and videos, players were able to hide their speed easier. Today, I think the average player has a greater knowledge of the game and players than that of 30 or 40 years ago. The top players used to guard their knowledge of the game because it meant $$ on the pool table.

What has changed is the perception of the weaker players that they have a chance to win. I think they used to believe that certain players "just got lucky". Not anymore, too much knowledge and too much communication.

One other thing, to the players that scammed the Vegas bookies...
U Killed Action!

P.S. Contrary to popular belief, poker did not kill action.

Yeah how brutal is that...U blow 35,000, pay, then the next day u come back "post" the money in the safe, win and only get your money back....Pool is for the birds...Im gonna start huntin somethin else....But hey on another note we got 2 tournaments in a rown down in the Houston area so yall come on down and gamble......

poker, casinos, easy access to gambling that doesn't require effort

David,

In this communication age it is more widely known so you could say communication killed action but in truth every low trick you are complaining about has always happened. Folks were a little more discreet about it when getting caught meant a quick trip to the Mississippi River bridge and trying to swim with more chain than you could carry but these things have always happened.

What has killed pool is that time and effort are required to gamble at it. The pool players are still there but the gamblers have went elsewhere where they can rely on luck or think they have easily obtained skills.

Pool can be compared to horse racing in this respect. When there was little else to gamble on horse racing was a billion dollar industry. Now without casinos having to subsidize them, few horse tracks would still exist and the industry would be gone.

Bottom line is that most of the people that came to the pool room primarily to gamble are gone, the pool players are still there. There just aren't that many pool players, probably never have been.

Hu

There is not one thing that everyone has said that is untrue...
But you forgot one thing ...The one that gets more players has more T.V. coverage including N.B.C. the one sport where you can beat anybody in the world after paying only a year or less...

EXACTLY

there is only an elite group of players that will bet into the thousands. why is this?
1. Pool takes too long to get good at.
2. Pool involves a small percentage of chance
3. I hate to say this, but many people in the pool world are scumbags. i think this is due to the fact that a lot of pool/gambling is done in hole in the wall bars where these scumbags picked up the game.

if i am wealthy and love to gamble why would i go to a shitty pool hall filled with scumbags when i can play poker or get out on the golf course with decent people or friends?

money creates action and a lot of the people that are associated with pool have very little.

On the other hand i have met some great people playing pool and the mass majority of the folks on this forum are nothing short of AWESOME.

Hey David,

It made me sick the time you came to Corpus as a kid and got aired of I think $1800 just because you were so young. I've heard your game has improved so if I get back to hitting balls I'll try to play you but I've been way too busy lately to play with opening my own business.

Anyway, I'll see you soon if the matchup happens with one of my friends down here.

I'll second the idea

I can count right away a player for each of my fingers who I wouldn't put a dime on. It's those P.O.S. people who get the new blood and then ruin it for everyone else. The guy who loves pool, puts his savings in on a player, and then gets dumped by his new pool 'friend'. Disgusts me, and I have seen it many times. Once they've done it, I don't care if they don't ever do it again.. they are a p.o.s. in my book.
