Who "won" a split tournament?

There was no real winner of the tourney, usually the A side winner will get a little more dough, but still you guys just "split"

I once accepted a split offer in the final from Efren at Hard Times just so that I could say we split :D Sounds so much cooler than saying I got beat by Efren, doesn't it ?!! Besides, I have already got the beat down pat with him twice before. Now, I am working on beating him just the once!

If First and Second split the money, how should it be recorded? Especially when the split is larger than 2nd place prize money, and smaller than 1st.

1st, 1st, 3rd & 4th

or

1/2 split, 1/2 split, 3rd, 4th?

it is a double elimination tournament. I never decide to split unless I lose the first set in the finals. Kind of dumb to decide to split when they have to beat you twice.

I have gone both ways, splitting after losing the first set, or going ahead and playing the finals all the way.

Snapshot9 has it right, in dlb. ele. you should at least play the first set of finals before any splitting of monies, you can say you won if you do.

, but if the split happens before the ( at least one set played ) I'd say they won, if you was weak enough to go for it!

From another perspective, if others came to watch, the game itself lost respect, the room owner also (unless it's 4am) especially if its a coin op, and when the results are posted the news, whether here or in print.

I split all the time if given the chance because it's a $10 Sunday tournament and I have to go to work in the morning. It's the time thing for me more than the money, if I'm lucky enough to make it to the hot seat, I may have to wait around for another 1-1 1/2 hours to play my match with the possibility of playing two sets :(. It's just not worth it & has nothing to do w/the money or not wanting to win. Plus, at that time in the evening people are pretty much drunk & since I don't drink it gets a little silly (but kind of fun).

The room records the person in the hot seat as the winner but that's not what I say, I tell people I split 1st & 2nd.

I just like to play & don't care if I win or not - Sunday tourneys are pretty much all I play these days...but it's always nice to make a little lunch money for the week if the planets align just right. :)

This is a good point. If there are people wanting to watch the owner will ask us to play & I respect that, but it's not my 1st choice.

In my mind, when a "split the money" decision is made, the "B" side winner concedes (i.e., forfeits) to the "A" side winner... and the concession the "A" winner makes is to split the combined 1st and 2nd place money with the "B" side winner.

I just remembered, I was forced to split a tourny once because they ran out of time to finish. After I won the hot seat, they gave me half the $$. For some reason, I think of it as a win, because I'm the only one who didn't lose a match.
