I totally agree Craig..This really is not going to be an easy thing. First, there are only a handful of cuemakers that I would think would be willing to tackle something like this. I want top quality work in this cue. I want nothing but the best and I want this to be a cue that when a Vet sees it, he or she gets a huge lump in their throat and they KNOW that this is for THEM! When someone sees this cue, I want them to know that the Veteran GIVES UP EVERYTHING...in order for us to live in a Free Land!

I just want to honor our Veterans, but, there is a dark side to that...its to the THOUSANDS of Men and Women, who gave us their all, and are now suffering each and every day with Mental, and Physical Wounds from being in combat. I see this every day and it tears my hart up. These men and women are not thought of anymore. They think that if a Vet comes home, then thats the end of it....that cant be farthest from the truth...their pain and suffering is JUST beginning..we dont think about them...I want to do this for them!

So this has to be someone special to do this. This cue will have alot of meaning...Just like Joeys cue. This cue will be so everyone will remember the disabled vets....so it will take someone special to make it!

Any ideas you guys have for me to contact about doing this is greatly appreciated.....or if you are that SPECIAL cuemaker and want to contact me.....send me a pm

Shawn

I understand how you feel about this subject, it is also something that is near my heart, and something I live with every day. You know when we are young we thought we are invincible, and for those who join our Military Forces this invincibility is reinforced. During my service in the US Army from 1979 - 2003 most soldiers would not admit to having any type of problem. We all wanted to be the tough guy, and we strove to prove it every day, age had nothing to do with it either, in fact as I got older I would work harder PT the hell out of the 20 year olds.

Then in 1999 I could not go to sleep one night, and that night turned into 7 nights in a row, before it sunk in that something was wrong. I went up to Madigan Army Medical Center at Ft. Lewis, Washington and talked to a Doctor. This guy sends me down to Metal Health for evaluation and I am thinking what the @@ck, well to make a long story short they tell me that I have PTSD. At this time I am thinking these people don't have a clue, I mean I am a tough guy right, well I was wrong. I started taking medication after my visit and within a week for the most part my sleep cycles mostly returned to normal. When, I retired in 2003 I started to see a doctor at American Lake Va Hospital, since that time I have tried to stop taking the medication twice with negative results. It appears that I am going to be forced to continue taking this medication for the rest of life, but I suppose that is small price to pay. Many people on the forum have asked me if I ever sleep, because I appear to be on the forum all night long, now I think many will understand why. I still have problems with sleep at times, and the INTERNET give me something to do, well enough said about me.

I have also seen the far darker side of these problems, I have met many individuals that for whatever reason do not respond to treatment. Many are not leading a quality existence, most are very Ill and in addtion are also homeless. These people just kinda fall thought the cracks because our society doesn't draw line between some one who is lazy and doesn't want to work and some one who is Physically and mental Ill and is unable to work and many Vet's fall into this category. I also wish people could understand the problems faced by our Vets when they return home or back into the civilain sectory, well maybe some day, it appears things are certainly getting better.

I will support you in any way I can, I think your project and your service in the VA should be applauded~~~~~~

Bumping this to the top

I have alot of ideas for this cue and a few cuemakers that I will discuss this with....anyone else have any ideas on who you would get to make a cue like this?

Thanks,
Shawn

WOW, I can now add Joey's cue to my list of nicest looking cues I have ever seen!

As far as Shawn's request, might I suggest trying to find a qualified cue maker that is a Veteran himself? IMHO that would make the cue even more special. I mean, we are all thankful for those who serve our country. But I would imagine you have to actually go through it to have a full understanding of what they give to us everyday.

As far as the best cue for the money would definitely be Gilbert. He does amazing work that is extremely reasonable and his theme cues are second to none. If you want Schick to do this cue it is going to be MUCH more expensive and I will bet not any nicer.

Another benefit is you will get the cue in a reasonable amount of time, I am not sure what his backlog is currently, but normally you will get a cue in about a year.

I own cues from virtually every cue maker that has been listed and I can honestly say that none of them are better than what Andy is currently doing and most of them aren't as nice.

One thought about this cue. You could do a really nice box cue with scrimmed ivory inlays depicting scenes from the battlefield, hospital etc, to honor the Disabled Vets. Check out Jerry Oliver or Paul Mottey's cues.

I have exchanged a few emails with Pete Petree, we are going to discuss this cue at Olathe Ks this weekend to see if this is something he woudl consider doing.

I've got to second this. I've seen Andy's work first hand (my brother has a scrimshawed cue from Andy, and the work is top notch), and his scrimshaw work is awesome. The hit is rock solid, according to my brother, and the cue is a daily player. Pics of the cue are here: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=20599
Andy is my choice for when I order my custom cue. If things don't work out with your first choice, contact Andy Gilbert.

I have contacted 2 cuemakers about this cue so far....I figured since Pete Petree was close to home I would see what he could bring to the plate. I have seen a couple of his cues and they were amazing. Andy is another cuemaker I am going to contact. I have 6 cuemakers total I am going to contact and go with the one I feel can bring the most to the plate.
