Top 5 vs. top 5, in their respective order. So the best US player would play the best Philipino player. And the second best would play the second best, and so on. thoughts?

At this point in time, assuming you have Efren, Busta, Pagulayan, Manalo and Orcullo representing the Philippines, I think the Filipinos have an edge. In the IPT tournament held last year, the Filipinos lorded it over the rest of the field. Manalo won 15 (or was it 17) straight games and won over Archer, Duel, etc a couple of times before being beaten ONLY by Efren and Busta.

I'd have to agree. However, the only way to really determine mastery of one country over the other, would be for the top 5 to all play each other, in a round robin style match.

Let's see, guess we're talking Manalo, Reyes, Bustamante, Pagulayan, and Orcullo as Team Phillipines.

I wonder if all the other countries combined could put together a group of five that would be favored to beat these guys. Certainly, the US could not.

The only country with a shot at Team Phillipines would seem to be Germany, with Souquet, Hohmann, Engert, Ortmann and Roschkowski a team to be reckoned with.

Let's not forget that they dominated the US Open, too, with Alex, Jose and Francisco coming first, second, and third respectively.

if this is 8 ball or any rotation game, i would say team USA doesnt stand a chance. if it were say one pocket or straight pool we would put up a better fight.

i think the taiwanese are the only ones that would stand a chance in a team competition against the philipinos at 9 ball.

I would like to hear some suggestions for a "Team USA" five-man roster...assuming perhaps that we're talking about an all-around sort of competition with several events (8/9/14.1/1P).

If Germany had Souquet, Hohmann, Engert, Ortmann and Roschkowski, you don't think they'd have a shot aganst the Philippines?

Any Team America starts with Johnny Archer. After that, for an all-around event, I'd probably go with guys who excel at more than one game well, such as Jeremy Jones, Danny Harriman, Corey Deuel, and Jason Miller. I might even consider all-around legends Hopkins and Varner.

Taiwan or Germany would have a better chance against the Filipinos, but I wouldn't put my money on the U.S.

Who would be the top 5 U.S. players anyway, in your opinion? Obviously, Archer & Deuel. But who else? Jeremy Jones, Rodney Morris, and maybe Gabe Owen or Charlie Williams?

What about team Taiwan? Chao, Yang, Wu, Pei-Wei Chang, and Kuo perhaps?

I think team Taiwan and team Germany (Souquet, Hohmann, Engert, Ortmann, Roschkowski) are more evenly match.

Hard to beat team Philippines at this point. When you have to leave a guy like Parica out, you know you got a country spilling over with talent.

P.S. I forgot all about Strickland. Ooops.

Team America - F**K yeah!"

Team USA:

Archer
Strickland
Jones
Duel
McCready

Team Phillipines:

Reyes
Bustamante
Pagulayan
Manalo
Orcullo

Now... how to stage this 'mighty' match?

Round robin?

1st vs 1st, 2nd vs 2nd etc...

And... who's gonna pay for it?

Who's gonna make it worth the player's while?

Why don't we wait 'til the IPT on July 23rd.

Then we'll see...

Course we will.

I CAN'T WAIT!!!

I'd favour the Phillipino's over the Germans, although this for sure is a strong German team that is certainly capable of winning as well.

If it was a straight pool match, I like the Germans chances. If it was rotation they were playing, the Phillipines would most likely destroy them.

I'd love to see a four country round robin matchup featuring The Phillipines, the Germans,Tiawan, and the USA.You could also add the UK and the Netherlands to the equation, however, they would no doubt be underdogs against "the Big Four".I think a five man team tournament in this regard would be exciting and good for pool.

Before we go any further in selecting players we need to determine the games to be played. The USA would select 9-ball, straight pool, one pocket, etc.
Other countries may include 3 cushion billiards, Rotation, Snooker, etc.

What are your thoughts? I agree a round robin tournament would be best.

How about 10-ball? Pros haven't unlocked the secret of breaking a 10-ball rack as well as 9-ball.

There use to be a World Team Billiards, but was only held once, what happened to that?

i dunno, havent really seen enough of them play to say either way.

i think parica was left out because hes been in the US for decades.

no doubt about it, team USA

Remember we would have Mike Sigel, the greatest pool player of all time and the recently upset king of the hill of the IPT, the only true professional pool tour, the only one played on the only real tables, and the only tour where they play for real money.(now I know where my missing monopoly money has been going)

In case nobody guesses, I just finished watching the second installment of the IPT KOH series! :D :D :D

Although he has not been in top form recently, Shannon Daulton should still be considered one of the top all-around players. He has won the all-around title at DCC twice and I think he was second one year. Those are pretty impressive credentials IMO. I don't know many players who would be favored if they had to post up the cash and play a set each of 1P, 9ball and banks. I know it is not a long list.

That is not the reason. Parica has made a few trips back here but there are a lot of stronger players here than Parica. Still waiting in the wings that can possibly join the Phil. 1st team are Ronnie Alcano, Warren Kiamco, Antonio Gabica, Nikoy Lining, Gandy Valle, Jerome Pena, Carlo Boado, Joven Bustamante, Allan Cuartero, Russian Ceniza (watched him beat Sambajon with Santos getting the wild7), Victor Arpilleda, Deo Mark Alpajora, Jeffrey de Luna and a group of 16&17 year olds who play a ball under in money games against these guys.

Whoops! I forgot about the recent winner of the Bankok leg of the Asian 9-Ball Tour, Ramil Gallego!

This depends alot on the game, but I would have to put my money on the Phillipines. A team of Reyes, Manalo, Bustamante, Pagulayan and Orcullo is just to good to bet against. As mentioned, Taiwan and Germany could also put together teams that would be a force to reckon with, I would put my money on the Germans playing straight pool against any other nation in a heartbeat.
