Who's Cue would you as a Cuemaker play with

I am in the market for a new cue, and hopefully a fewof the Cuemakers on the forum will answer this question.

If you were not a Cuemaker, and I assume playing with your own creation.

What cuemaker's cue would you purchase as your player, favorite playing cue.

I am not looking for a fancy cue, just a player of maybe Cocobolo, some other exotic wood, and some nice ring work.

Believe the term is "merry widow"?

played with a wide variety of custom cues and wouldn't cull any of them ,,, all played super good !!!.......JMHO

Though I am not a cuemaker, I am exposed to a great myriad of cues to use.

A few of my favs:

Ariel Carmelli
JossWest (of Old)
Gus Szamboti
Bob Hunter
Jerry McWhorter
Schon (one that is at least 15 years old must have Ivory Ferrule).
Joss (at least 15 years old - must have Ivory Ferrule)

Recommend a Cue :)

I think your question is tantamount to asking us cuemakers to recommend some other cuemaker's cues.

I don't know of a single cuemaker that does not think his cues are better than any other cuemaker's cues. To ask a cuemaker to recommend another cuemaker's cues is like asking him to cut his own throat. Most cuemakers will not answer the question.

I recommend Arnot Cue Custom Cues and I do have a vested interested in the recommendation. :)

As a customer I find that cuemakers that answer questions like this one to be even more in demand, at least by me. Think it takes someone very confident in their own ability to praise others work. Just one customers view point though.

Your best bet might be an "up and coming" cuemaker... Find one that is reputed to be doing good work, and commission a cue. You will probably get one faster and cheaper than from anyone else, and be supporting somone starting out.

Make that two.
I agree whole heartedly.

I have spoken with several cuemakers and have brought up the names of makers whose cues I used in the past. Many of the makers I spoke with were shy about giving their opinion regarding other makers. Much of it was positive!!! Guess that means I never really owned a cue made by a "hack".

After hearing what I wanted in a cue, I even heard a recommendation or two. Naturally the cuemakers preferred their own work, but made statements similar to: "if you don't get one made by me, ________ is a good choice and you wouldn't be sorry." I respected the maker lots more after the statement.

To me that is the sign of a true professional.

I for one have no problem with your question. I started with a Meucci, then went to a Viking, then I settled in a Joss East I got for a song. nice detail and inlays, and I might have the chance to get it back for my collection. It's the only one I have ever seen like it. The gentlemen still has it. I played with that for four years before I started building my own.

What cue would I play with

Dave Barenbrugge would be top on my list...McWorter is a close second though... Of course No Wrap if they see this and decide to send me one :)

I suspect that most cue makers would choose to play with one of their owns cues.

Since I started building custom cues, I have never found one that hits any better than the one I built for myself.

My opinion may be jaded, or unfair in other ways, but again my first choice would be my own.

Like others, I would play with (and currently do) one that I have built, but cues of choice prior to me building cues (no particular order):
- Prather
- Espiritu
- Jacoby
- Mike Webb
- CAM Custom Cue
- DZ
- Chad Carter
I've always played with solid built and good looking cues that range from $250- $1500. I don't buy because the price is high, therefore the cue must be a great hitting/feeling cue. I buy because of customer service and playability. To each his own! Find what works for you and go for it.

* I agree with the previous post about commissioning an up and coming cue maker, it typically is quicker and much cheaper and your helping a cue maker get rolling. (yes, I happen to fall into this "up and coming" catagory)

Best of luck with your selection,
Zim

I have been lucky in being able to have owned and shot with several good cues before I started building them myself.
I started with a Meuci Original, and then moved up to a Mcdermot D21. After that I happened across a limited edition Mcdermot Texas-T. At the 93 BCA show in Vegas I ended up buying Dale Perry's show piece one of a kind Ebony,Amboyna, and Ivory $3000 cue. From there I met and became friends with Mike Durbin of Durbin Custom Cues and played with several of his cues before I started making them myself.
All of the cues that I had owned were good playing cues, but not better than the ones that I make now. I did take in on trade, a AE Ebony and Maple Sneeky Pete with Ivory diamonds and a stainless joint That shoots and feels almost identical to mine.

In production cues I like a old 80's or early 90's Meucci with larger joint size. I also like non-stainless joint Andy Gilberts and Barry Camerons. But if I had to pick one cuemaker to make a cue to play the way I want it, I would have my son Israel build it. He is the only one that builds a cue with the exact hit I like. He likes to do some crazy stuff at times that I would not want, but he builds the best playing cue for me of any other cuemaker if he sticks with the normal methods.
