If a cue has a hit you don't care for the reason is probably you not the cue. It just may not be what you are used to and most people are literally monkeys swinging a pole.:D
So this should be a Hay Monkeys thread! And any monkey can tell you the cue is not magic but the stroke is!:D
No offense,
Merry Christmas,
Nick :)

Ya know Nick, for once I think you and I actually agree on something here. Though not entirely. To a degree, I think the cue DOES make a difference.
And I don't think anyone here would really argue that. But its a very SMALL degree.

The rest definitely does come down to stroke and the player's ability. Otherwise, guys like Corey Deuel, Johnny Archer, Thorsten Hohmann, and a slew of others would be playing with Ginas and Schicks and Tascarellas. But they sure as hell seem to get by with the production cues they play with.

So hats off Nick. I agree with you 90%!!!

I wonder if Cory, Johnny and Thorsten every tried out these custom cues? I know some pros that have been playing so long with their cue that it's really hard to get them to change even if you give them a 20K cue.

Thosten Hohmann played an EXCELLENT cue. I think he still owns it. Its a vollmer cue. www.vollmercue.de
The cuemaker Michael Vollmer learned from Tony (Black Boar). He still uses the same technique and does dead perfect work!!! There are way more beatifull vollmer cues out there than the ones shown on his homepage. Unfortunately you can`t get a steal on one of these....

Watch this one for example (scrawl down to middle):

Any further questions? ;) (it`s a saying in german)

So we always hear the hype about "hit like a mack truck", "hit a ton", and "hit is INCREDIBLE!", but I'm curious..... Who makes a cue that just hits like crap? Why do you not like them?

Not looking for opinions on cuemakers you don't care for, but cues that just consistently don't seem to be right....

Like others have said, I've yet to see an add in the for sale section that said, "it doesn't really hit all that great, but I'm selling it anyways...."

My vote - Ernie Martinez. I bought one due to the hype and was sorely dissappointed... Didn't like the taper, the joint, the balance - nothing.

I own two cues that hit like a ton of scrap wood. One is a Schrager and the other is a Pechauer. Both were pretty pricey and were made to my specs. I've played with other cues made by these guys and in general they have been pretty playable. I think anybody can make a clunker just like you can get a bad Mercedes or Lexus once in a while. Since I bought those two cues I don't buy any cue I don't play with first.

I don't have near the wealth of experience about hitting a bunch of different cues like some of you, but I can tell you this..........I've had meucci originals I loved as well as 4-5 Mcdermotts. l
Love the hit of a few guys other cues I've played with (Schon, Pechauer, Diveney, Hamilton to name a few) but the one cue I got rid of quickly was a Players cue. But in Players defense, the guy i sold it to loves it and he's been playing with it for 3-4 years now. Each to his own I guess.

How can we verify if one plays well enough to qualify the hit/playability of a cue?

I'll probably get hammered for this but both my Meucci's hit great to me. I've also hit some McDermott's that hit like crap IMO.

I do agree that the black-dot shafts Meucci makes are JUNK. The red-dot I own hits more like the pre-dot shaft on my old Meucci, just not as stiff but close enough for me. My old pre-dot was shooting awesome with a Moori soft before my ferrule cracked. Like others say, you can tell a difference between a pre-dot shaft, red-dot, and black-dot. I'll never waste my money on a black-dot again and I'm a Meucci supporter.

But like others have said, it all depends on your OWN hit and how it feels to you. What feels good to me would probably feel like junk to someone else.

i'm a decent player. i have been buying/trading/selling cues for years and years now. i have been able to play with EVERY maker on this earth. took a long time, but the ride has been a blast. i've tried every tip, breakcue, shaft, ferrule, yadayada. here is what i believe i have come up with.

hit is not that subjective.

I have been able to play with almost every cuemaker also. I agree that the hit is not that subjective. Sometimes one cuemaker will have two different hits depending on the year the cues were made. For instance, old 1970 ginacue hits totally different than today's ginacue. 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000 Josswest cues all have different hits. ;)

I have to put my $0.02 in.. I have read most of this thread. You can't rate a cuemakers hit on one cue. Some builders try to standardize the "HIT". I customize the "HIT" to the player.

The "HIT" of a cue is so subjective. When I build a custom for a customer the first thing I do is ask some questions.
What kind of cue are you playing with now?
Do you like the way it hits?
What do you want to change about the hit?
Shoot with 4 of mine which one do you like the best?
What would you change about the hit?
I along with most other cuemakers can change the hit as desired.
You like the hit of a Moochi... I hate the hit, it's like a wet noodle.
Softer woods produce softer hits. Some are more dense than others still carry vibration for feel but don't hit good.

My list

Yes, it is subjective...and this is an old thread but thought it should be bumped with my list.

Excellent Players in order of my preference:

Ed Young / Sugartree
SouthWest
Ernie Martinez

Hit a couple balls with and liked:
Mike Webb
Kikel
Skip Weston

Best Jump Breaks:
Mike Stacey
Andy Gilbert

Did not like:
BlueGrass (not even close to a SW as some claim)
BlackBoar (two: one was horrible, one was OK)
Frey
Dale Perry
Bludworth (not one of Leonard's but one of his rels. who used his red dot)
Viking
Schon (saved up forever to buy an LTD and it was an aweful player, and to boot the fit and finish on the inlay work was horrible and both shafts were warped)
Predator 3k5 unilok
PFD Titlist Conversion

*At the top of my list for acquisition, have heard wonderful things:

Searing (I have spent a lot of time talking with Dennis about his methods and machinery; we definitely see eye to eye philosophically and I cannot wait for first hand experience with his stainless half joint!!!)

I almost agree 100% Except Zieler and EM... They hit great IMO.... Had a Black Boar that hit like SH@#!!!!!!!!! However, I have a HILL that is one of the top 10 out of 500 cues or so... Very nice!!!!!
