Who's the Most Promising Young American Player

I saw Chris Futrell play in the nationals this year. Won the 14 and under if I'm not mistaken! very strong young player. John Morra is another great young talent out of Canada.

Chris Futrell better not be at the 14 nationals in June because I am ready for him.

I play a LOT more one hole than I do anything else. I learned the game many years ago and had a "brush" with fame when I lived in Dallas. I was just playing around with the back rail in a pool hall and an "older" guy (I was 18 at the time) came up to me and asked if I knew how to play one pocket. I said, "oh yeah, you wanna play some?" ..... He said, "sure, I'll give you 12-4". Needless to say I made one ball in 8 games, and it was CJ Wiley that asked me in his own pool hall.

If you are ever in Dallas again tell me, we can meet up and play some 9-ball, :)

I'm not real sure how good he is but I really like Earnesto's son. I think his name is Oscar. I saw Earnesto and him when they were re-felting tables in Sacramento a while back. I got a chance to talk to him and Earnesto; nice people!! With a dad like Earnesto, this kid has to have a pretty good chance. It is so nice to see good people in this sport once in a while.

Oscar (and Ernesto) is a good friend of mine. We often go to tournaments together, either he hitches a ride with me or I hitch a ride with him and Ernesto. IMO Oscar is going to be a top contender later on. Ernesto has more knowledge about the game than most top pros out there, and if you saw how good Oscar got in what short time period, you would be shocked.

A young player I've heard a lot about but whom I've never seen play is Joss tour regular Tom D'Alfonso.

Anyone have any thoughts on him?

How about?

How about Andy Friedhoff out of OK ,I think? Lars Vartleman out of MO? Rich Schlegule Jr out IND, I believe? I think my choice would have to be Brandon Ashcroft, escpecially on the barbox. Not sure they are all young as you asked for.

New England's "Shorty." Haven't seen him recently. He's definitely a strong player.

Ian Costello is worthy of mention, as well as Jarrod Clowery and Tony Ruberto. Is Dennis Hatch considered a "young player"? I've got some old pool magazines which show photos of Dennis as a youngster winning 9-ball tournaments. When Dennis is "on," he's pretty hard to beat!

Shaun "The Shirt" Wilkie from Maryland is one of the young guns in my area, powerful break, strong focus, books winners, and one to watch in the future.

Pookie is already making a name for himself by showing no fear in any venue, whether in tournament play or action. Funny story about Pookie, 2 years ago at the Carolinas Open, him being an long-time admirer of Jose Parica, he requested his autograph as a keepsake, and of course, Jose obliged. One year later at the recent '04 Open, upon request, Pookie was proudly giving out his autograph to some fans. When I pointed this out to him, he winked at me! ;)

A favorite in my household is Ryan "Genie Man" McCreesh, New York's gift to Maryland. Great guy to be with on the road, knows the game and all of its players, plays well in games of stake as well as competition.

I've also been seeing North Carolina's "G.I. Joe" a/k/a B.J. Ussery's name in the headlines. He's booking back-to-back victories. Sam Monday is another Carolinean jewel. Sparky belongs in this group, too, for the Carolina contingency of strong players.

He isn't American but John Morra is already dominating some veteran players 3 times his age out east.

IMO one of the top "young" americans and one of my favorites is Danny Basavich although I've only seen him shoot on my TV screen he is certainly impressive.

Hell, I can do that. Try finding a 138 year old that I can't beat.

Hello JAM,

As far as young players...Shaun Wilkie does come to mind and also Josh Brothers and Matt Krah. I saw that Josh won the Hampton Ridge points leader. Congrats to him.

Ernesto and Ismael are the best!!!!

Hi,
I had the pleasure of spending time with these two gentlemen (morro paez and ernesto dominguez) when they were here for the north american 9 ball event 2 years ago. Both are Excellent guys and even took the time to give me some lessons. Definately an assest to the sport. If u see Ernesto again, pls say that the filipino kid in calgary/Canada who took them around said hi. Thanks again

Ernesto has the smoothest stroke I've ever seen. Once I started trying to copy his stroke it has been gradually been pulling me out of a very long slump.

I go to their house frequently and I will tell Ernesto you said hello. What's your name? You can PM me if you want.

young players

I agree with that post, Lars Vardaman, Chuck Raulston and "Little" andy friedenhoff (origianlly from springfield, mo) are all top notch players. also talking about "young" players you have to give a thought to Andy Quinn out of St. Louis, not REALLY young, but still one of the top players around here.

I agree with the others, but I don't know about that Chuck guy. He can't play. :D

John Morra i am pretty sure represented Canada at the worlds but BCA sponsered his trip so he wore the american BCA shirt.

I hope I can wear the BCA shirt at Jr.Worlds next year. :D

Ya see this is mainly just sad. Someone asks who the best "young" player in America is and people start answering with people in their late 20's to 30's. Schmidt, Basavich, Bryant, Frost, and others may be great players but they are NOT young, those guys are in their prime of their playing lives and they are not going to ever be the next Johnny Archer, who was at 19 years old already proving he was going to be a top pro in the game. In a age when you have Chia Chang Wu getting 3rd place in a Asian tour event full of TOP pros and losing to Efren and making it through his bracket in the world championships at 15! years old, this is a young player who is going to be someone. Or take Yu Lun Wu, who also at 15 actually BEAT Chia Chang in the world junior finals and arguably has a better break then ANY pro in the world atm. Or a country with Albin Oschan, who at 14 put out a good showing of his skills in the World Juniors and could perhaps be at the level of the Wu's with another year of practice and seasoning and experience. Morra is the ONLY person on this thread mentioned that really qualifies as a truely "young" player, and he is Canadian.

If you cannot look to the 15-18 age group and see a phenom with unreal skills then you should worry for America and it's future as competitive nation of pool skill. The top players in the USA are old, and they are getting older. There is noone comming up that looks like a Archer replacement, who is the last of the truely competitive TOP world class pro's. Duell might have been the next one, but he does not seem to care in the slightest about the game any more. Archer, Strickland, Morris, these guys are not young, they are not going to last forever. Who is going to carry the flag against Yang, Immonen, The two Wu's when they hit their prime in their 20's, Oschan when he hits his stride in his 20's. America has noone at this time that looks like they can carry the flag and put up the good fight against that kind of mad talent. Neither does Canada for that matter. I think John Morra is a great player, atm he is probably as good as I am and he is worlds better then I was at 15 but he does not hold a candle to the Wu's, and I doubt he can make it to a Yang or Immonen level by his early 20's. He wont be a Archer calibre player, that top level where you really cannot put anyone over the guy. Archer at 19 was as good as pretty much anyone in America. Pagulayan had that kind of mad skill, he was a phenom and the world saw him comming, if this thread shows anything it is that America has noone comming up in the ranks that is a truely young player that is going to dominate the pool scene in the future.
