When did you see Buddy Hall play at the Greenway? I hung out at the Greenway in the late '70's and watched Buddy play Dan Louie there in 1977. It turns out that Hemicuda's was there at the same time.

Hmm....I'd have to guess mid 79 to late 80,that was when me and some of my high school friends spent most our time there(course could be wrong...we all had that hair back then..LOL).There were probably a lot of the best players hanging around at Greenway back then.Being high schoolers though usually when the money came out in front or the back room us poor teens cleared out.LOL

By the way I heard "THE NEW GREENWAY BILLIARDS" has opened under new management. Haven't been by there yet though and if you're familiar with "The Rack", I heard they got raided for a Texas Express game awhile back. Screwy them running a game nowadays since there are two casinos in town.

Terry

Earl Strickland when he is winning

Cory Deuel when he doesn't have a tee time the next day.

Buddy Hall anytime

Mike Sigel - never saw him play in person but have his perfect videos and his 150 ball run sure are great.

Rodney Morris is like a machine.

Actually, my favorite is just about any of the pros that I see play in person.

The cheers for Efren are all well and good but I think you've really hit the nail here - so many cheers in this thread have been for a hometown hero or a 'guy I played once' or a pro who 'really seemed nice'. If the pool playing community appreciates those players they've had some exposure to such a degree imagine what Joe Average thinks when he says 'Earl Who?'

Its got to be tony drago! He's a character on and off the table

Tony is very entertaining to watch, not only that but he also conducts himself like a gentleman on and off the table.

I would always pull up a chair to watch Roger Griffis. (even though he is not really in the limelight these days)

That's a name I haven't heard in a long, long time. Where's he at these days, is he still playing?

By the way... I'm pleading the 5th on my answer. I've got some good friends in this game and I enjoy watching ALL of them.

Playing Now: Efren Reyes - awesome cueball

Not "playing" today (on tour): George "Ginky" SanSouci - one of the best pure, natural, effortless pool strokes I've ever seen - and I'm lucky enough to see him play semi regularly.

Hey, Pooltime, was nice seeing you at Amsterdam Billiard Club last night. Thanks for sweating my match. I doubt I'd have made that comeback from 7 -2 behind without your encouragement!

FYI, Ginky spent a lot of time studying the way the Fillipinos played when he was new on the pro scene. I believe it helped him become one of the clearest thinkers I've ever seen at the pool table.

PM me and we'll arrange a game. I'll be in town for the entire three day holiday weekend in case you're interested in setting something up.

My apologies for the bias, but my favs are still filipinos:

Efren Reyes: For his magic in this game.

Dyango Bustamante: For his fluid stroke and funny comments.

Alex Pagulayan: Pure fun and crazyness both in and out of pool.

I like to watch;
Dennis Hatch

Player I loved to watch was;
Johnny Ervolino

But my All-Time Favorite to watch...
Nick Varner

Mike Sigel - For his ability to play text book pool at the absolute HIGHEST level - all games!
Efren Reyes - For his just natural ability to play any game at it's best, yet you can't even fathom what is going on in his mind.
Steve Mizerak - For having the most beautiful stroke I ever saw.
Nick Varner - For his championship poise, professionalism, and work ethic.
Earl Strickland - For his his competitive spirit and drive - and straight shooting.
Johnny Archer - For being a 9 ball perfectionist and inspiring me to take the game up many, many, years ago. When he's on his game, there is no one else I'd rather watch play the game.
Buddy Hall - For lumbering around the table, and rifling in everything in site like a machine. Beautiful stroke, and monster competitor.
Keith McCready - For having the heart of a lion, and innate natural ability.
Jim Rempe - For being a textbook example of how pool should be played.
Allen Hopkins - For his unorthodox style, and amazing amount of knowledge.

How can you pick a favorite? I guess I can just pick my favorite attributes from many many great players. The list could go on...but that's enough.

I hate to pick a favorite, but Nick is one of my all time favorites to watch as well. The first match I ever saw was the 1989 World 9 Ball Semi-finals then finals. Nick had an angel on his shoulders during that series. He beat Earl Strickland and played Grady Mathews in the finals. He and Grady got to the hill, both playing beautifully, but Nick got the rolls and won the Championship. Grady and Nick both handled it like such gentleman and great ambassadors to our sport.

Here's another vote for Nick Varner. A great player, a gentleman and all around nice guy. I've talked to him several times at various tournaments, and he has always been friendly.

SJM, don't know if I was good luck for you in that match or bad luck for your opponent :)
I see you are coming back into stroke well.

Yes, I would like to play again. I am actually supposed to play Ginky tonight - or should I say take my beating tonight :D

I will not know until Sat afternoon if I can make it down that night. I will PM you if so. It would make for a good Holiday weekend to get beatings on 2 nights straight ;)
- or as I like to look at it - my valuable lesson time!

Thanks.

Of the guys who have already been mentioned here's one who I don't think has been mentioned...Larry Liscotti to watch this guy gamble there should have been a cover charge....Brutally funny woofer/ trash talker and wonderful game, stroke was effortless and amazing... Their are very few showman left in the game...He was one.... :D
