Why all the nicknames?

For quite awhile there was a guy in the room who I knew as Joe Deloya.
One night we were talking about a legal issue and someone said ask Joe he's a lawyer.
I said Joe who?
Joe the lawyer.
With the New Jersey accent Joe the lawyer sounded like Joe Deloya to me.

You were the victim of a localized homophony. Technically, a mondegreen.

Last names are hard to remember, occupations or physical characteristics are much easier. If you referred to Landlord Larry or Filipino Gene in my area, almost everybody would instantly know who you were talking about.

It was easy too remember a person by his nickname. Like in Austin their was Bastrop, Bastrop Jr, LD, Little Al, Checkbook George, Chicken Man, Skinny Kenny, Smokey, Cash Register, Bank Robber John. I don't know how John got the bank robber moniker though.

The first No Penny Benny was Benny Allen , a champion back in the early 1900s
"The Snail". Frank Taberski took over from him

it's a time honored pool room tradition in pool rooms. I think it came about because of the characters you can see in them. the decline in the number of old time rooms is why people don't understand it. if you ever saw Willie the Weasel you would understand

We have a few nicknames here in Tulsa too & we have some that have gone on... Some of the names here are a derivative of their name & some are just nicknames... Sarge, Cheif, CeeBee, TC, Spanky, Mac....

When the POKER came & took a bunch of players, things got pretty slow. The players that left Pool, to play poker, lost their money, their cues, their wives & their homes. They need new nicknames like broke Bobby, borrowing Ben, AirBarrel Andy & so on...

IMO, it's easier to recongnize a player from a general area... and some o them are funny...

IE... instead of saying Tom from Top Hat in which there are at least 4 Tom's that go in there regular, I say Cigar Tom and you immediately know who I'm talking about.

Aloha Sam

It almost sounds as if you are fishing for a moniker. I'm sure someone could start a poll and this site could come up with one for you. As you are well aware one cannot just give themselves a nickname, but it is given by ones piers.

You seem like a brite young fellow, so my vote would go for "Lambskins". Guess we will see if it sticks.

. BTW, how's your practice coming?

Aloha

Nicknames

From many a night sitting bar-side as a youngster watching ppl play...............

I can honestly say, ALCOHOL was definetely a contributing factor.

Lol , I can't Imagine anyone wanting that nickname. It goes like this - " Hey here cums lambskin; he always gets the nuts! "

Sam,
I've only read your o.p., so I don't know if anyone has brought this up; but, you might think about giving yourself a nickname. ( I really don't know if you can do that yourself or if you have to e-mail Mike Howerton) Maybe you've noticed, with few exceptions, the only posters who post under their real names are pool industry types. They're somewhat
"Still on the job" while posting here and hence; have to be "On their toes."

I recall reading a few of your previous posts. You write like a bright fella and probably won't write any stupid posts that make you say, "Thank God no one knows who I am!"
It's just that I have sneezing fits from time to time and you don't want to find yourself posting under me if "stupid post writing" ever becomes contagious!
