Why are box cases out?

As I have been returning to pool after 25 years I have been puzzled by the lack of nice box cases. I have always preferred them. Is there something evil about them that I missed? I wish I had several of this one.

I don't think they're evil, just not the most
desirable cases. I believe they are a great case
to protect your cues, but there are so many
cases out there that look better. Ever drive
into a housing subdivision and hear someone
make a comment on how all the houses look
like boxes? Same thing, people prefer shapes
other than a square, but that's just my opinion...

People now have break and jump cues to carry around and all these newfangled tip tools and cue accessories. With these newer non-box cases you get more cue real estate, while cutting down on weight.

I'd say it's primarily a matter of function. If you want a case to take outside the house, I think a top-opening tube case has advantages, including the following.

- A box case requires quite a large horizontal surface to put the case on to remove or insert items. A tube case has a much smaller "footprint" when the case is being used, and sits on the floor.

- Related to the above point, a tube case is often easier to get into in the middle of a match to get an accessory or change shafts/butts.

- A box case often has quite limited space for accessories. A tube case can have outside pockets with large capacity.

- A box case often has only a suitcase-type handle; so one hand is occupied when the case is being carried. A tube case often has a shoulder strap as well as one or two handles, so both hands can be free when carrying the case. And a shoulder strap makes a case easier to carry for long distances or long periods of time.

- A box case that will hold 3 or 4 cues and their shafts is normally quite wide. A tube case with the same capacity is more compact.

I still prefer box cases myself.

I made this one out of an endoscope case:

Lots of room for accessories. It stands on end just fine in my closet.

I've always loved the look of that style of "suitcase" case that McDermott sold in the late 70's/early 80's. Do you know where I can get one?

Schmelke still sells box cases.

I don't know if O'neil is still in business but those cases are great.

Post in the wanted section and check ebay. They are around.

The McDermott ones made by O'neil were great. Some of the McDermott ones were cheaper and not as nice. You can look at pics online and learn to recognize the difference.

I still have one...it looks like yours, except mine has a shag carpet type exterior to it...I like it...it hold two butts & two shafts...with a little "pocket" at the end of the cues - just enough for a couple cubes of chalk and a shaft slicker...don't need much more than that to play pool...except a repeatable stroke...I'll have to look for that in another case!

Id...

I think Id own a box case if it had the same type of seal as a george case....I like having only one small opening for the cues...less surface for things to fall out, etc...however, nothing like opening the box case and having a Bushka in it...LOL

JB once posted a beautiful leather box case. I don't remember who made it and I searched the heck out of the forums and can't find it now. He will know if you ask him. It's somebody who does custom leather work, not generally cue cases I think. It was a real beauty.

I think it was Arne Mason at www.arnemason.com.

I am glad a lot of people like these old cases. I always carried mine by holding it on the end; almost like a cane. I wonder if the pouch side of modern case could be stitched onto the lid of a box case to solve the added storage issue. I have bought four new box cases but the quality is so low I would not use them to travel with, they do work fine for storage/display at my house.

That's a nice case. One sold on ebay about a month ago. I almost bid on it. But I didn't know who made it. Can you tell me the brand of your case. The one on ebay sold for $76.00. I have an original Palmer box case I bought on ebay for my Custom Third Catalog Model 17. The one with the Dots in the Collars shown on the Palmer Collector Website.

I have no idea what brand my case is, I saw the one on ebay and it looked beat to me.

I know what you mean about box cases. I think they're very elegant, though maybe not as practical as the modern ones. I have several, including this four compartment O'Neill. A classic cue looks pretty good in it too.
