Why do many players spend more on a cue than they do for a pool table?

Just curious. I shelled out $3100 for my table, a used Diamond 9 footer. Love it. The most I ever shelled out for a cue was $500 and I lamented the price thereafter. My current cue is a $200 used one I picked up here on AZB for sale. Seems to me that the table is the more important purchase, but that does not seem to be the case here in AZB la la land.

I would like to see numbers on how many that are shelling out 3-4k+ on a cue but balking at 4-5k on a table, doubt there are many.

Considering I can get an excellent Gold Crown for about a grand I sometimes ask why people spend so much on pool tables.

$3,100.00 eh?

Likely could have bought a much better cue with that $2,100.00 difference.

I don't know about you, but I don't carry a pool table around. I don't take it to the pool hall, I have to play on their tables there, but I don't have to use their cues.

Because I don't have space for a beautiful five thousand dollar Diamond table in my small house, but I do have space for a beautiful three thousand dollar Tascarella in my case.

Yes Sir!

And I can take my beautiful trophy wife with me wherever I go!

If you are lucky enough to have room for a home table and are not filthy rich, I would spend the least on the table itself and the most on quality rails and cloth.

As for cues, I often get asked by players in my league for my opinion as to what cue to buy and how much they should spend. I always tell them the same thing. A used cue plays the same as a new cue, as long as you have a new tip. Never skimp on the quality of the tip.

You can't carry a table to the pool hall. Some of it is kind of like "look at what I've got."

Yup.

Like the car.

And the wife.

OK...I'll skip that picture....

I think we have a winner. Having said that, I can appreciate the craftmanship of a cue as art, but the function is pretty similar if you want to spend $$50 or $5000.

A cheap pool table does not play like a nice diamond or gold crown.

Best $3100 I've ever spent. I would not have been satisfied with a gold crown. All IMHO, of course.

I have a very nice table, it was $3200 new, but I bought it 10 years after the fact for $600.00. It is Still a nice Table & functions very nicely.

I had an $1100.00 Pechauer, a $1200 Huebler... put them both up for sale when Guido Orlandi made my Magic Wand. I've had high dollar Blacks, SW's, Meuccis, Schon's, Macs, Pechauers, Rambows, Hoppe's & the like... nothing comes close to my Guido Orlandi Cue.

tables have a much smaller market
they require a commitment of cash.time.and space that could be put t a better use

many people don't enjoy a home table, playing pool is something social

criticism of expensive cues is a denial of the true value, cues are a very good investment

few people who can afford the time space and enjoy pool, really care about the same things that your average pool hall person do

i enjoy my kling at home with 4.75 pockets
i might prefer 5inch

i also own an Anniversary and Centennial, i only need one
the others can be bought

i wouldn't trade either table for 3 new diamonds, i don't like the diamond table

the rails pockets etc play funny, they know and most really good pool people know it

the investment quality of the diamond is not good so why buy something going down in value

most of the cues i buy are going up

just one mans ideas

My cue and table were within a grand of each other. I will let you figure out which is which...lol

When I did the math for a table, I found that what I was looking for, Diamond Pro 4.5 x 9, worked out to about the same money new vs used. When you factor in the time and distance to get a used table, pay for set-up, and, deal with potential issues, a new table is not that much more expensive.

I paid the money for my cue because I really like the way it plays and I am perfectly content. I was fortunate to own both.

Ah. Personal satisfaction.

You just answered you own question.

I'm not trying to knock it, seriously. I like that each person can enjoy what they enjoy. Personally, I am not a collector by nature. One of my best friends is. He has $50,000 worth of arrowheads. I wouldn't give home $50 for them though.

I think it is generally accepted that you can readily find used gold crowns for cheaper than you can find used diamonds. Your Kling sounds great. My buddy has one. Personally, I like the centennial. It's a nice fashion piece.

I don't know anything g about cues as an investment. I like to own things that pay me to own them like stocks, bonds and real estate.

Again, I'm not knocking nice cues or those who appreciate them.

I also wouldnt spend more than 500 on a cue.....I am more concerned with playing pool than what my cue looks like or the inlays.....for me personally I would rather spend the money on something else....That being said if u are into cues and want to get something fancy more power to you and i hope u are happy.....beauty of living in a free country......the pursuit of happiness.
