Why do people put chalk...

If you let something like 'chalking your cue while walking away from the table' get into your head then I could beat you with simple mind games alone.

I'll make eyes at your girlfriend and watch you explode.

Try asking the opponent to stop and if he continues then just keep some chalk in your pocket. You do carry your own chalk with you when you play right?

Don't get beat by mind games.

It's not always true that because you don't like something that an opponent does, it will translate into you shooting poorly. You simply think that some people are rude or stupid d*ckwads when doing it. The things that I mentioned in my previous post (however far back in the thread it was I don't recall) have no ill effect on my game whatsoever.

Maniac (has no game to begin with :D)

Ideally, your mind should be so focused on the game that you won't even notice how the chalk is laying or how it might be getting on your clothes.

Ideally .....

Thanks for wishing me good luck. One question: If you and I are playing poker, and I have a personal quirk (think twitch) that really irritates you, am I cheating the game, or dishonoring any rules by exploiting your weakness?

Gambling on pool is no different. You let me get under your skin, I'll do it in a heartbeat. If we're playing a friendly social game (fine by me), I'll play like the Duke of Edinburgh.

Your analogy doesn't work. Bluffing and trying to "read" your opponents is a fundamental component of the game of poker. Intentionally irritating an opponent is not a part of either game. From what you said so far, however, I would guess you believe that "winning from the chair", or somehow attempting to bother your opponent enough that their game somehow suffers, is part of any game you play. ;)

By your logic, it would be acceptable to yell "Noonan!" every time my opponent pulls the trigger, or sound a fog horn or something. Just different by degree. Don't you have enough confidence in your own *pool* game to just play nice and win on the table?

KMRUNOUT

this is the first time i ever heard people talking about chalk, I for one do not really pay attentn to how i place the chalk. I mean is someone really going to call a foul and take ball in hand cause someone placed the chalk upside down ?

chalk residue on a pool table is part of pool, now i can see on a home table someone would say something. But at a poolhall i for one am not going to make sure the chalk is placed a certain way cause it upsets someone.

Different games you're in and different players you play dictate different levels of "etiquette". That said, if I'm playing someone in a serious game and he/she starts with deliberate forms of sharking, if that person crosses "my line" I'll either firmly address it or I'll not play that person again.

There's a ton of butt-heads in this game; I play for challenge and enjoyment. If I'm not enjoying the game with someone, screw it. I'll play someone else or just not play.

Maybe some of you sharking folk could make a New Years resolution to be a mature adult and show some respect to the players that show YOU respect.

Efren does it too. Is he ignorant too?

Several top players do it. There are two reasons to do it. It keeps powder from accumulating in the cup of the chalk and it makes it more difficult for an unethical opponent to put a foreign substance on the chalk.

I play with my own chalk and keep it in my pocket when I'm not at the table.

relax...it takes two seconds to go around the rails with a rag. If this is what you loose sleep over, you should bet higher.

This Might Sound Odd......But.....

When I first started palying pool back in the 60's, I noticed that some of the older players, who were also better attired, wore pool aprons. I had my mom sew me one fifty tears ago and used it a lot. The stopped and lost the darn thing.

Well, six months ago I was in a pool hall at an out of town tournament and I noticed a younger player wearing one. I asked how comehe wore the apron and the #1 reason was...you guessed it...chalk and just dust & dirt too.

Well, a few months ago, I saw that jayhekbert hada pool apron listed for sale and it was made of dungaree material just like one's jeans are made of. It was barely used, had a belt to fasten not strings and pockets on both sides. I figured what the heck...well, when it arrived, I discovered it was really well made. The denim is not stiff, the pockets are great, the belt has a clip to fasten around one's waist and the apron is "lined" so that it feels smooth and rests comfortably across your waist and upper thighs.

I like wearing it now...I can wipe my hands on the sidesif ever sweaty, I keep a piece of 600 grit sandpaper in it to scuff my tips and of course, a piece of Blue Diamond chalk, And now my car keys are no longer sitting in my cue case or tucked in my front pocket now which can be annoying if shooting a completely stretched out shot....the pool apron just works. And several players have asked me where did I get it......I tell them...jayhelbert....AZBilliards Forum member.

I have an apron given to me by one of the old timers. He had a couple extra and asked if I would care to have one. He dressed very well, and the apron kept him from getting chalk all over his nice slacks. It also kept his slacks from getting snags on it from the metal around the table (old Gold Crown). I don't use it much as I am more of a bluejeans/Tshirt or shorts/Tshirt kind of guy, but evertime I see it in my bag I think of him (he passed away in 2011).

As for the chalk issue, I could care less about how the chalk is left on the table. If the rail gets too chalked up, 10 seconds with a rag or napkin will fix that. I am usually too concerned about how I am screwing myself, or getting my ass handed to me by my opponent to be worried about the chalk.

no chalk on rails

been watching snooker on youtube for months and have yet to see any chalk on the rails. i think that practice should be followed in the US pool scene.

you know i saw someone in Newport news Va wearing an apron i thought it was an awsome idea.
