Reasons

1) Because when they don't play well, it puts them in a state of poverty.
And if you haven't eaten for 3-4 days, you really concentrate on winning the next game or set. (assuming you have a backer).

2) They play more money ball over there, all the time, which means it is more competitive, and therefore more challenging.

3) Filapinos, I have found, are a smart people as a whole.

4) Winning in Billiards over there is a source of National Pride and recognition, and is recognized by the government.

Billiards is the national sport in the Philippines.
Efren is their Tiger Woods and national hero.
It's a blue collar country and "true" billiards is a blue collar sport. One beat-up table and a couple of broomsticks can entertain many.
Not a lot of kids with PS3's, Xbox 360's, or Core 2 Duo computers there.
They're not very athletic by nature, so they play pool instead.
They're intelligent.
They're shrewd gamblers.
They're calm.
Filipinos don't like to lose---lot's of pride.
I know a few Filipino players and they're pretty damn good.;)

That's an interesting observation and conclusion. I don't agree, but will ask why you believe they are 'not very athletic by nature' ?

Dave

PS The answer in my mind is simply more time at the table

They're obviously a lower income country and don't have a lot of organized sports. Take a look at their, for example, olympic medal count and per capita pro sports programs. The Philippines is the 12th most populated country in the world at over 90,000,000, but there just isn't much interest or money put into athletic programs;)

Comprende?

I have spent a lot of time in the PI. When in the provinces I see young kids playing on cardboard tables under a sheet metal roof or bambo roof. Pouring rain coming down 5 feet away. There arent a lot of things to do in the province...so the kids play pool all day. So I think its lots of table time on crap equipment that makes them good. The biggest problem they have is adjusting to the western tables. The cloth and banks are very different in the PI.

This is Simple, they dont have a wide broadband network which keeps their youth from playing online video games 18 hours a day. Instead, they play pool 18 hours a day.

Because there situation is much like it was here in the states from the 40's to the 70's.

Good question

Lots of leasure time? Why aren't there women philipino pros? They're at work?

When i was a little kid we the girls are not allowed to enter in the pool hall, to me i thought pool is only for boys, not until i met my husband (he shoots pool). Our parents are very strict and see to it the girls dont mingle and fall for the boys, whom they think are street kids, (honestly). You noticed only this girl just came out, who is she? i forgot her name.

All your comment is true i'll accept it, even if it hurts...

Please, no malice intended at all. Cultural differences are a real part of the world. I try not to judge.

Pool is the national sport and the average guy aspires to excell at what matters in that society. It's like asking why there are so many good basketball or football or baseball players, or golfers or, or , or in the US?

More of the athletically inclined people there take up pool. Here there is much more money in other ventures or sports.

I have to agree with the people that said it is because of the amount of time they play. Nothing will make you a more complete player than practice, practice, practice.

When you're bright, you can choose to do whatever in the US. You're gonna have money, and everything:cool:

In the Philipines, I guess, it's not easy for "not that rich" people to get higher in the society.
-How is the school program there?
-What do they do if they're not good at pool?
-Is it easy to get jobs?

It's late
