Why does everyone Love SVB, compared to Earl

It's simple.. SVB is respectful young man, never makes a scene... Comparable game. What's not to like? How many cues has Shane broken???

Earl on the other hand...it's amazing how many people on this board give him and his antics a free pass simply because he can play some pool??? "Just Earl Being Earl"...No it's Earl being a complete Ass. He's no role model. I really think he's bi-polar.

Who would you want your child to grow up like?

...because Earl can catch a gear like none other. And there's never a dull moment with that guy. The couple times I've met him, he's been the nicest guy in the world and always willing to share a few tips.

Other guys in other sports have the same reputations...John Daly, John McEnroe, Terrell Owens, and Mike Tyson immediately come to mind. Equal but lesser-known tempers? Tiger Woods, Serena Williams, Nolan Ryan, and Alonzo Mourning.

Shane and Earl just have different personalities...that's all. It's sad to see the entire pool community gang up on the best 9baller ever (and the best all-around athlete in the pool world). If I was in the same position, I'd be pissed too.

Although I don't disagree at all with Earls talent but I wouldn't put him in the category with the names you mentioned due to the fact that pool isn't even in the same realm as other professional sports.I do agree that other sports have there share of temper-mental people but those sports are also very successful and have been for years, where pool seems to struggle especially with funding.Don't get me wrong ,there's some really great professional players out there but pool seems to attract a different breed of personalities which a guy like Earl is very entertaining to alot of people
but not millions of people. If sponsors won't waste there time with pool,it might not be the sport but the people playing it.

I do agree with your comment but not the role model part.Any sports figure should worry about playing there sport as well as possible and thats it.I strongly disagree with people who believe that athletes are suppose to provide the ''roll model''status to make up for peoples lack of parenting skills.Parents should be the roll models for there kids not sports figures.

Wouldn't this give Earl more 'right' to be bitter then the other people mentioned(in his mind)? He excels at something that people really do not care about. While the other people mentioned are rich and famous, Earl is as good at his profession as they are. I am sure he is not rich, and he is famous only to losers like us.:)

I might go crazy too, if I were Earl.:(

You make a great point Ross!Earl may be bitter that the he hasn't got his dues like he feels he should have but being in this sport as long as he has chosen to stay should of been a dead give away that pool has tons of hurdles to overcome and just doesn't have the following.I know here in Canada pool is struggling real bad and only has a couple of successful tours running right now.Until pool is looked at as a sport and not a recreation,it'll always remain in the state it is,which is very unfortunate for the players(even Earl):smile:that have put in so much of there time, effort, and life and to come out of it with very little recognition.

It's possible. I don't think it helps when we focus on his temper.

But then again...he puts asses in seats. And that is valuable to sponsors, regardless of why people are watching. Remember Dennis Rodman? People used to watch just to find out what color his hair was gonna be.

True enough ,but again were talking about a sport like basketball that has proven itself and has been in the upper echelon for years.Pool on the other hand hasn't hit that point yet to compare them.Fans of baseball or basketball will spend $8 for a beer or $12.00 on a hotdog compared to pool where we have a whole thread on AZ about players being pissed about having to pay for water!

I was around Earl for several days in a row last year, and enjoyed every minute of it. But I'm not going to defend him. His sometimes behaviour around the table and towards opponents and spectators, well, he may be no "role model" to kids, but then, I don't have kids. I'm a pool enthusiast, and love watching a great player at work. It remains a fact that people flock to see Earl. They flocked to see McEnroe, and nodded off watching Lendl - now what does that tell us about the average spectator's mindset? Have you ever witnessed Earl matches live? Ever noticed spectators do all they can to get him to go ballistic? Now, he's just one person, but they are an immense number - truly admirable all that typically human behaviour, eh? Now, I for one have zero interest in watching excentricities NOR passive-aggressive behaviour (in fact, the latter's even more of a buzzkill), because what I'm interested in is the game itself (the quality itself of a match). But what I like or don't like is irrelevant: what our sport needs, and dearly, are crowd pullers. It's sad but true: people love to hate Earl! I can't honestly say this makes me lose respect for him any more than them

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

A child to grow up like Earl? Who would wish that on any mother??

You make it sound like he can't even be considered the best 9 baller ever.... 5 US Opens, 6 world titles & every other championship under the sun?????? Don't let your dislike for his personality cloud your judgement.... He was clearly the greatest.

Bitter???

Didnt Earl win a $$Million?? OK he might not have gotten paid all of it, but he did get paid??? If he does not like the sport he does not have to play the game...., great player yes, but he is not and has not really been winning right, so SVB is the man and will be until someone takes him off!

I got to see Earl play at a predator event not long ago. There was a pretty big crowd watching when Earl blew a pretty easy run out. After he missed, earl went up to each of us on the rail and gave us the look of death. One by one he pointed his finger at us and said "you wanted me to miss that!" We all looked at each other in disbelief, and agreed that nobody had said a word. Things got even uglier after the match. As a fan of earls, it was a very sad moment for me.

He'll do that. He's a mad genius. Like I said, no use defending him. But: no use defending anyone else either. He's a great player, and an asset to the sport. He might be without his eccentricities also. But then, he'd not be Earl. Can't have one without the other. I personally don't care. He's a great guy once one gets to know him a little, and yes, losing it occasionally (if not more often than that). Of course he thinks he's right and the others are wrong. But that, in itself, is the sign of a truly great player. He won't give in. Like him or not. To me he's one of the greatest 9-Ball players of all time (he'd be the first to tell you he's isn't the greatest all-around player of all time - he thinks Efren is, and so do I). Seriously, I'm more interested in improving myself than others. Ironically, one can learn that from Earl as much as from anyone else.
