Why don't all cuemakers line up ring work at the joint?

The grain in the wood joint is lined up but the stitch rings are not. I would still consider it nice work though.

I'm with cueman here. Grains line up, rings just a tad off. Of course, depends on how many 0.000 you are looking at.

I had a sneaky once, jointless. Put the shaft on and you see the wood grains line up. Great hit.

Nice thread....

Personally, the first thing I do when I buy a cue is play with it. Reputation to me for a cue builder is based solely on the playability and quality of their cues first and foremost then how nice the cue looks after.....Although, I'll admit it's nice to have both. Playability is subjective but quality of wood used is not in a quality cue. For some to based the reputation of a cue builders by details and looks...eg. ring work doesn't line up and associate that will poor playability or quality means they are really missing out. Lots of guys from the Phillipines built perfectly aligned cues by hands...yet their cues only fetch a small amount compare to their counterpart in NA. Why? Not to mentioned with quality shafts....they plays just as good. It's all about branding....and ring alignment is just another gimmick to me to help with branding.

Personally, ring work lining up is minor details especially when you should be looking at playability and quality first (especially true if you want to judge a cue builder).... I don't care about ring work alignment if the cue plays like a monster. For someone to judge the ability of a cue builder based on details first tell me they think playability and quality is secondary to looks. I have probably one of the best cue in the world with the ugliest points that have void that are filled by epoxy (not builder fault..my blank was bad) and he was able to use it to make one of the best playing cue that I have ever touch....and I've touch many. The cue was built by Joel Weinstock.....and this is one of the cue that I'm looking to emulate in term of playability and quality.

Of course, lot of quality cue builders like Mottey have already achieved the quality and playability status bar so aligned ring is just a bonus...if not...who cares. I'll take it...if you willing to sell for less.

Duc.

 thanks for sharing. Just what percentage of your
blanks are bad ?

LOL.....I think this was a short splice blank that I've selected that had very similar property to a gus szamboti and I was happy with how it turned out.

Here's pic of the cues:

Also in the pic is my old reliable tournament cue from Miranda made in the Philippines. No machine...all hand cut and inlays. Talks about quality craftsmanship that you would not find in today's cue....I think only a few cue builder like Paul Dayton still does his inlays by hands. Shafts were built by Don Broos and the playability is up there with the best of the best.

FYI..the full splice blanks I sell had about 3% defective from over 1500 blanks , all defective one were sent back to the shop to be recycle as parts as such as rings, etc. I no longer market them on AZ as they are now marketing themselves. I'm proud to said that there are 1200 plus of my high quality full splice blanks in the market and it been really nice to see these converted by some of the best builders in the industry but more importantly to me is that I was able to sell a product to the cue builders who is able to generate positive return on their investment. Plus, as a bonus I have an excuse to head out to the pool room and meet some really nice people and play pool :). Also, I get to meet with a lot of cue builders to get their honest feedback on how I to make my product better....I have excellent feedback from clients and friends on AZ.

So if you happen to come by one of the "Duc's blank" conversion shoot me a PM. I've seen some amazing conversion cues with my blank and I'm sure more will pop up and then. Check out my site if you havn't already...www.customcuesandtips.com.

Thanks Asia for asking the question.:D

Btw, here's a shot of my full splice blanks:

Sorry after reading my statement...I think may have worded my thoughts incorrectly... when I said I "Probably have one of the ugliest cue with points that have void that are filled by epoxy (not builder fault.. my blank was bad )". I really meant:

I have probably one of the best cue in the world with the ugliest points that have void that are filled by epoxy (not builder fault..my blank was bad) and he was able to use it to make one of the best playing cue that I have ever touch....and I've touch many. My bad on this!
