I dunno - Jeanette Lee does a'ight. Jenn Barretta seems to be making ends meet. Yeah, although pool is a horrible sport to market, it is slightly less horrible than curling.

a pro player has a job. it is playing pool. that is why they are called pro players. if you play pool for a living, that is your job. what is it about this you dont understand?

I'm of the opinion that none of us will live long enough to see people making a lot of money from either curling or pool in this country.
Tell you the truth, I think curling would have more appeal to non players of either sport (and I use the term loosely in both instances). It's different, there is more physical activity readily apparent, and you an watch the play develop as the stone (or is it rock) slides down the ice.

Sorry, I digress from pool, but I didn't start it. :)
 
I think that with some research someone might find the Miz was a sub-stitute teacher. I seem to remember that little tidbit. Makes all the difference in calling your own schedule as subbing is a pretty flexible gig if you have 'other income' from something like pool. :cool: Regular Teaching is good in the summer, but they are rather in-flexible about taking three weeks off in May as the school year winds down. :rolleyes:

FWIW Luc Salvas owns a couple of very successful rooms in Quebec which help him attend all the major tournaments despite not being a top player. There are also a handful of players I couldn't begin to name that own rooms as an additional source of income.

Here's my Miz research..

Well just to follow your advice, here's the results of my research on the Miz. This came from an interview he did with AZB. Sounds an awful lot like he was a full-time teacher and part-time player.

Steve: I started when I was 4. I kept playing straight thru grammar school and high school. I went away to college and got a teaching degree. Taught school for 13 years. Owned a couple of businesses and here I am. I never left pool. I just played it on a part time basis while I was teaching.

AZB: Why was it important to have that time as a teacher?

Steve: Well, you always want to teach the young children and hopefully make a difference in somebody's life. You had to make a paycheck and pool was not the way to make a paycheck back then. You have that pressure on you daily. You either win or you are out on the street. It's a lot tougher with no job. I was fortunate to go to college and get a job and do a beer commercial. I was very lucky. God was very good to me and still is.

On the flipside, a very good Pacific Northwest player worked his tail off over the weekend past in an attempt to win a $600 top prize tournament. I can't say for sure he won, since I didn't go back for day 2, wanted to clear my lungs of all the smoke. Pretty hard work for low pay, if you ask me.

I'm a glass half-full type of girl... more like it's ONLY August and the top money winner already has $55K (again, not including sponsor and endorsement money). It can't be compared to the salaries of NFL/NBA/MLB players because those sports have huge sponsor dollars. Until pool finds big corporate sponsors, winnings will always be considerably less.

Im a glass full type of guy, but when I would be on top of the list of money made so far this year ahead of the top professionals in the world then something isn't right. I have said time and time again that until pool changes is marketing approach and cleans its image up, the major sponsors aren't going to step up, thereby keeping pool as a second or third tier pro sport.

... and not deducting expenses. Most of those folks weren't American and probably made most of their money somewhere else.

BTW, I was once a glass is half-full kinda guy, but I've lived long enough to get a little more cautious.
