Why is it when you beat a better player even up ...

Bad Action

There always back lash. I beat a person that lives in the bay area in a end of the month open tournament 5-3. I was focused and played well. Why can't the better player just say good playing kid! Instead I get you got the 8 ball for $1000. Actions like these make me not want to play pool. Lately I've been working on my game and mostly my attitude while playing it. I was taught by Dave Piona so naturally I am a cry baby. 6 months ago I stopped *****ing and started running out more often. I hope one sat someone will be disappointed they lost but proud I played well under the pressure. Sorry for the rant. Jesse

During match play, every player makes their choice....''do I want to improve my play or do I want to get better at whining & complaining''. :speechless: If your the type of player that is mentally all in during match play, often....opponents will try and distract you OUT of your zone. Personally, I've found these type of players bad to do business with and should be avoided, unless you have other objectives. I'd rather lose to someone I enjoy playing than play with someone that does all the ''other stuff'' during play.

Just to be objective, the better player when they enter tournaments puts some of their rep on the line as well. Since pool is a game where in a short race like you describe, a race to 5, anyone can win you haven't really beaten anyone.

To come on here and say you beat the guy you would have to have beat him for real. You won a single short race, you didn't bust the guy after a 10 hour session. It is one of the reasons players don't really like to play for fun. They can win nothing but they can lose some of their rep.

If you really thought you could beat him you would have offered to play him with the 8 when he asked for what you were comfortable playing for, maybe $50. or a $100.. I have a feeling you were afraid if you did counter offer he would say yes.

So none of the sprinters are good because they lose to the long distance runners? You still need to bring your game in the short race and mistakes becomes even more critical. I also think that replacing 'rep' with 'ego' would probably be more accurate. That's one of the things that people don't like to discuss. Look at most degenerating league threads, they all come down to "you suck", "you act all proud beating somebody 2 to 4" and so on. Many "good" players are just jerks unless you're kissing their butt and they're most likely to reciprocate that.. whoop them and all of the sudden they want to be your best friend.

What ever happened to congratulating somebody and moving on? It means a lot more to those lower players and gives them a little something to talk about and look forward to.

I'm ask everyone to play. Most the time high stakes or $20 a game even. I'm not a donation arm though.

Haven't you been barking for $1000+ matches even if you're the underdog?

Your terminology is more correct. The OP won the match, he didn't beat anybody. The other player has not conceded anything and was more then happy to continue playing if the OP were willing to. It doesn't sound like he was very beat.

I continued on in the tournament. Winning a couple more sets. Ended up getting 5-6 place which was good for me in a open tournament.

The reason for my original post was because when I lose I wish them the best in the tournament. Seems like top notch player don't want to help the confidence of the lesser player. Probably due to them wanting the advantage next time. I'm no longer afraid of people and realize I'm just playing the balls and myself.

Well put

Yep. Just played Chris Cruz who is probably a ball and half better in one pocket and the 8 better in mine ball. I bet $600 even up in a 5 ahead set last weds.

if you are playing him even, maybe he is no longer a ball and a half better

You aren't doing it right until you get them to snap their cue in half and end up banging their head against a wall.

Lol shit. I played a local player Phil yee race to 25 for $500. He had me 24-19. I ended up getting it to 24-24 and he suggested going to 30. I won 30-24. He went out side and threw his 2k Ariel carmelie like a javelin at least 30 yards and shattered it.

Some people are poor losers. Some poor winners. Best to be neither, just humble but be confident.

...and don't forget to shoot their nuts off!

I always say I got lucky LOL It never matters. losers always have an excuse. Its a fact. Just sit around and listen to anyone who loses a match and you can write a book with all of the reasons they have. A guy told me one time he could gave me the 7. I told him not that match and walked away. I don't gamble so I don't to to much crap. Just keep getting better and keep winning. One day they will see and respect your improvement. Until then just get lucky and keep winning.

Can't remember what I was told a few years back, but is D oug W u still around? I tried to do a search and nothing came up for the past couple of years and his site has expired it looks like. Wasn't he a NorCal player? Did you ever play him?

I met Doug Wu 16 years ago when I walked into a little bar named magoo's in pleasant hill ca. I've played him a lot. We haven't seen him for several years now. If you find him let me know.

What you really want is for them to pay up and ask for a re-match!

Wasn't it Teddy Roosevelt that said "Walk softly and use a bar stick"? I wasn't very good in history.

I thought you were a young guy with a young family. What are you doing gambling like that? Seriously.

He was up in Portland about three or four years ago, I think, visiting friends. I played him a cheap short set, choked at the end and felt embarrassed that I was a couple dollars short. He was really nice and not concerned at all, but I still owe him two or three bucks! Hope he's alright and has just been busy with life. We played after league was over and the in house LO asked me if I knew who I was playing. Apparently he knew, but I couldn't tell how he played.

I wish I was young. I'm 37. My wife gets all the winnings and keeps track. I use my extra tip money from working so much to get better at pool. Not able to play many tournaments. So gambling is my test to get better.
