Why is the APA so frowned upon?

I chose a LONG time ago to never play APA. It is great for ultra beginners, but anyone who has a desire to GET BETTER should quit and play a real league, or just practice on your own and play tournaments.

APA has stupid rules.
A) Any pocket is good.
B) Mark your pocket for the 8 ball
C) in 9-ball, the match can end with balls still sitting on the table, etc,etc

Besides, many, I mean MANY players purposefully slow play or hold back so as to "Not get bumped up" before regionals or whatever. That my friend is bullshit. Any league that rewards slow-playing is for suckers.

I don't know ANY good players that play APA, only wannabees

come to Florida i will show you an APA player wannabee! make sure you bring your best game with you and your piggy bank!!

To hell with the piggy bank. Bring the deed to your house or the title to your car:p! You're too lenient FL9!

Can't anyone just have fun playing pool? Even top 10% players? Two twenty ounce Labatt's drafts and an order of hot chicken wings please. Oh captain, please play me last. Need that aiming juice first:rolleyes:!

Hey guy, I am sure you would have no problem mopping the floor with the guy but we both know that it's all talk from these negative and jealous people. so many of them hate their lives and abilities and want the rest of to be miserable with them. Keep enjoying the game and meeting people like I do. Have a good one.

Here's an update on my APA adventure. Just finished my seventh week of play. Lost one game so far. Accidently sank the eight out of turn. Most of my opponents have been complimentary rather than angry. Apparently I started too late in the season to qualify for April Nationals. I'll fall one week short (9 matches). Our last qualifier is December 11th. Might try to sub on a different night.

Saw another APA bashing thread this morning. I read the information pack the national office sent me. It says right there the APA is not about league paybacks. It is about a free trip to Vegas if you qualify either in singles or team. Guess it will never end!

Not sure about your area but in my APA area you can shoot one player twice on the same night during the session but not in playoffs. This helps keep forfeits down in our area. I saw your a 7 so it might be difficult to do and still make handicap without forfeiting the last match on your team but its an option. Plus if you team has any chance to go to the playoffs for a trip to Vegas I would try anything I could to get my best player enough matches to qualify. It might be worth a call to your local lo to see what your options are.

They could never do that in my area. It would be too much of a detriment to their "23 rule" which makes them so much money!

Hmmm

A regular feature here at AZBilliards, bashing APA.

It is fashionable to bash whatever the biggest, or most popular. Wal-Mart. AT&T. The Yankees or Cowboys. Hannah Montana. Tom Cruise. Oprah. McDonalds. Whoever is the President. It makes people feel superior, to talk badly about the most successful or popular. It's "cool" to rail against #1. And when others do it, everyone can pile on and it's so much fun..

Hey Dub, so lets go with your list:

Walmart - the biggest,,yep. Quality products and/or considered the 'best' store? Nope.

McDonalds - biggest,,yep. Quality, healthy food and/or considered the "best" restaurant ? Nope

Hanna Montana - biggest kid singer, yep. Does she have the pipes / talent? Nope.

Presidents: Obama, yeah, he is the president. Top quality, leader and/or "best" President ? LMAO !!

SO, your theory about "picking" on the biggest, but all this only confirms is they get "picked on" because they are so lacking in either quality and/or abilities and are way over rated, and thus deserves a helping dose of reality. Sounds exactly like what these fine folks here at AZB are saying about the APA ! The biggest league? yep. The best league? not even freakin close IMHO.

If ever a comment is deserving of a "tap, tap, tap", this one is it. Green for you, sir.

Depends upon who is doing the frowning doesn’t it.

APA is a successful business venture that provides a venue for beginning players to have fun and learn to appreciate their limited skills. Players who have exceeded the skill requirements for APA are usually the ones who do the frowning with all sorts of straw man arguments that allow themselves to look down their nose at people who are paying to have a good time.

If you are a “player” meaning that you can run a few racks in any given week then you will find that APA is a frustrating experience where people are often quite happy with their limited skills, have a good time, and usually are not inclined to gamble or play in open tournaments..

As the APA player’s skills improve they find problems in APA such as the 23 rule, team split ups, and the attempts to control sand bagging by some of the players. So there are disgruntled advanced APA players who are making the transition to hall player but may not like the requirements for playing in a hall.

APA is, or at least should be, recreational. Some people advance beyond that and some are perfectly content with the night out. To all things, turn, turn, turn.

I suspect that those who “frown” on APA and similar leagues are simply pool snobs or wanna be players who resent the success of a pretty good business model.

Which in turn gets Joe a Tap,Tap,Tap.

I'm of the opinion it's primarily the pool snobbery, for the most part. Makes these folks feel far surperior.

To answer the RJ's post, if only just a bit... I said folks like to bash "the biggest". I never said "the best." "Best" is quite subjective, and is truly in the eye of the beholder, when it concerns quality. And that is beside the point. The point is that APA is the biggest because they provide a quality product more successfully than any of their competitors, in far more places than their competitors. It may not be the quality you desire. But it has to be of a certain quality to be as successful as it is.

If you don't like their particular brand of product, that doesn't make it better or worse. It makes it more or less desireable to you. Making aspersions about all of the examples on my original list is cute, and funny, for a forums sake. But you cannot dispute the point that the more successful ANYTHING or ANYBODY gets, the more they will get bashed, from the point of snobbery, as well. Whether you like Hannah Montana or Wal-Mart, or not. I was merely talking about success. I think I can probably go another 47 years without hearing Hannah Montana again, but that doesn't make her less popular, or successful. Just not my cup of tea. I go to Wal-mart when I have to, not because I want to. Doesn't make them any less the biggest retailer in the world, whether I like them or their practices, or not.

If BCAPL becomes available to more people, and it truly is "better" for more people, then it will no doubt become "the biggest". Or TAP, or VNEA, or the rest of the alphabet soup. I'll go along for the ride, too. If they're ever available to me. They aren't, not here, and obviously not a lot of other places, too.

Oh well, APA needs to be around, if only to make you folks feel better as you look down your noses at we, the unwashed league players... :rotflmao1:

Have some fun tonite, folks. We'll all survive this. I hope. :p

Why are you talking about me like you know me? "These negative people" The OP asked for opinions, I gave mine. And just so you guys know I'm serious and don't "hate my abilities and my life"
I will play ANY APA player a mixed set of 10 ball/9ball and one pocket for $1000 a set.

Well, I missed it! Got my ninth match in Wednesday evening. Could not find an APA team on Tuesday to play with on such short notice. Our APA league has it's last singles qualifier for spring regionals tomorrow. Oh well!

Still having fun. Haven't heard a negative word from an opponent. Strangely, just compliments. Expected to hear all kinds of negative crap but not a word. Get more "you're too good to play with us" from my BCAPL league than my APA competitors. Suppose it may be the lull before the storm. In my 49 APA games, I've only seen two balls slop in. One was a wayward eight ball from me! Seen more slop on the Joss Tour than that.

Anyway, thanks to my fellow AZ members for the APA encouragement. I'll keep playing till they throw me out. Next is getting my ten 9 ball matches out of the way. Should be done by March. I'll keep you informed.

Asked my LO about your suggestion. She only allows that in the Summer sessions because of the shortage of players. I appreciate your input.

Sounds like a member of the APA asking someone to bring their piggy bank. I am surprised you didn't request playing for beer. I'll play you as long as dropping the 9 ball wins the game and I don't have to mark the pocket. Oh and NO TIMEOUTS!!!

APA slop shots

Have not played APA for twenty years or so. I believe it was called Busch Pool League when I played. Only league in town, so you play. Out the other night getting ready to play BCA and ran into 4 APA players. Nice enough fellows but I guess I forgot how much slop can occur in a game. Didn't lose a game but each guy seemed to get easily 2or 3 slop shots per game which caused them to stay alive and get to end of game. Because of the slop each guy had a chance to win. Is that why APA plays slop? Everybody gets plenty of chances. Just shoot hard if you don't have a clue what to do! Even people who don't play league pool (barroom players) have more integrity about their game. They don't want to win like that. Most bar players would tell you (no slop in this bar). What is the reason APA wants to play slop? There has to be an answer for every rule in the rule book.

I can't and won't speak for the APA. What I can tell you is that in our division, I don't ever recall seeing someone just rear back and slam the balls to see what drops.

I have seen a little slop, every once in a while. Certainly not more than once a match. Or even once a match, save perhaps for the very newest beginners. In my match this week, both my opponent and I each slopped a ball in, both SL5's. Neither of us had slopped one in this session, if our memories served, and this is week 12 or 13. Each of us was more embarrassed at our own slop than upset when the other guy did it.

Maybe it's just our area that seems to have a mature attitude about this, and maybe it's the rest of the country that lives in slop-city. Tho I somehow don't believe that. Much ado about nothing. It's a rule, one that everyone plays by. One that doesn't drastically alter the outcome of the game, certainly not very often. Big deal.

And what is it about marking the pocket that sets everyone off so much? Yeah, no one else requires it, but exactly what kind of inconvenience is it that evokes such resentment and ridicule about it? Fer crying out loud, just lay something on the damned table, sink the ball and move on. Wow. It's a silly little basic rule they require, and following it shouldn't affect your game in ANY manner.

People just love to b*tch about stuff. Pretty unhappy types, to have to crap on things all the time to make themselves feel better....

Marking the pocket

I agree Justadub, having to put a coaster or whatever where you make the eight is pretty lame. Forgot about that rule. We used to agree with most teams to waive the coaster rule and point at the pocket or look at opponent and tell him where the eight goes. Now that I think of it I think that marking your pocket broke my momentum and caused me to miss the money ball! I knew there was a reason I missed those eight balls!!

Oh and NO TIMEOUTS!!!

It ain't the timeouts that bother me, it's the teams that turn a timeout into a frikkin' five-minute pool lesson !!! Then there's the teams that shoo the player away and figure out what the player should do by COMMITEE. sometimes three or four of them. Geez, it's just APA pool fer cryin' out loud!!!

If I give one of my players a timeout, I speak my mind and am sitting back down usually in 30-40 seconds. On a rare occasion I may stretch it out to a minute.
