Why is the Main Forum hijacked by technical freaks ?

Totally

You make a great point tonythetiger583. In fact, I agree with you 100%.

New members have been discouraged in posting by more seasoned posters who think that repeated subjects shouldn't be discussed again as new and that new members should first do a search for the information that has already been discussed. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS THAT THE FORUM SEEMS STAGNANT TO SOME.

The attempt to stifle new discussions on old subject matter and to ridicule posters because they want to have a discussion about a subject that has been discussed previously is one of the main problems of this site.

I think anyone who suggests that a subject has been discussed previously should be given a time-out for say a week to reflect on their omniscience. :D

In summary, some of those who look down their nose at new members for asking questions that have already been discussed are primarily responsible for the so-called stagnation that may exist in the forums.

(If you don't want to read about old topics, roll your eyes in private, ignore those threads, go somewhere else, or God forbid, create some new topic that is pool related and never been discussed previously.)

JoeyA

Totally agree. A few posts back was post that exemplifies the very pool snobbery that exists on this board. How are we supposed to keep newbies interested...when you wont answer a question. Its not like its apparent or filed in some order and there is a sign saying how to use the library here. Just answer the question or let someone else. Its not that hard, who knows you might actually get someone fired up about pool. Isnt that what we are supposed to be doing here?

Subforums and Pool Snobbery the demise of conversation.

There are times where I almost wish it was just clueless new people just hashing out ideas.

I love the process of coming up with an idea and being excited all the way to the pool hall to try out and test my new theory. I like hashing it out on azb, and looking for equally clueless people to tell me "Hey, that just might work".

I love the feeling of everything going awesome for the night, and I feel like I finally figure some sort of breakthrough.

I even love the bitter sweetness of figuring out that I was wrong and it's time to go back to the drawing board.

But to be original from a point of view of lack of knowledge, means very basic ideas. And can often times just mean being plain wrong. I'd rather have a simple wrong thought that I have to discover is wrong through trial and error, then having some higher up chime in and tell me it's wrong because pool has always been done this way for generations and generations from my father before me and so on.

I feel like it just kills the creative process when a person just tells me I'm wrong because of their archival knowledge of azb, instead of actually going to a table and physically trying to see what I see.

But yeah, to summarize:

-There's not really any place for new players to theorize and just be allowed to be wrong and actively learn on their own with perhaps some guidance. Guidance isn't the same as telling them they're wrong and providing links to why). I think new people are just forced into the common lore of how pool has always been done, and will always be done.

I'm more interested in active learning and the creative process, and trial by error.

And it bugs me to no end when I drive an hour to the pool hall just to work over this idea that I've been thinking about all day, just to be shut down by some know-it-all sitting in his briefs at his computer who probably only pictured it half-ass-edly in his head and drawn his set in stone conclusions.

I think my favourite lesson as a kid was when we got to do a diorama of pearl harbor. I got to do the center piece of the SS Arizona and my teacher bought the model that I was to assemble. Here is this teacher who was a very good model painter in his spare time, handing me the most complicated and elaborate piece to do on my own.

I took lunches and breaks off and I was just this little kid who was so excited that while all my other friends were playing, I was inside carefully gluing all these intricate pieces together. When I had it all fully assembled, I decided it was time to paint it.

The boat looked like complete shit when I was done. And the more and more I painted it, the more I realized that it would have been much easier if I had painted all the individual pieces before hand at least to some degree. I'm 12 and my teacher was 50 and he would come over and see how I was doing. He knew I was making a mistake and he let me learn me do it anyway. When I admitted that I should of painted it first, he had a sly grin and just shook his head in agreement.

Don't let fear of being wrong deter you from giving something your all.

I like your post

Tony,
I like your post a lot. Today I was working a particular Passover bank that its near impossible to beat the kiss on and I guess I shot 500 of them. Beating the kiss was possible but making the ball seemed not so if you beat the kiss and from slightly different positions the rules changed drastically. So I get this idea, why not play the bank against all the plausible ways it should or could be made to go and smash it into the rail....guess what it went nearly every time and beat the kiss but when I change positions a bit it didn't go.

What I learned is at a certain position its dead on now I will set to learning the how to make it from the other positions and Ive never seen anyone shoot it that way, so now that's a weapon.

I love figuring out new things, one of the greatest things about pool.

Don't let anyone dissuade you from learning how you do what you do.

Don't let fear of being wrong deter you from giving something your all.

No one is physically stopping you from trying something you are excited about. But, why then post it if you don't want to share it to help someone else, or don't want to hear any opposing views on the subject?

If you are truly sharing to help others with your new idea, ever consider others might be trying to help you by pointing out things so you don't waste your time trying to invent a square wheel? Why take such a negative attitude to advice from others pointing out things to make your journey shorter?

If you really want to learn everything the hard way, why post about it? What you call a good teacher, many others would call just a guy drawing a paycheck not really interested in actually teaching. Who needs school if you are just going to learn everything the hard way anyways??

You are right about one thing- never let the fear of being wrong deter you from giving something your all. Just don't let the knowledge of being wrong deter you from thinking more on the subject and coming up with a better way either. That is where true genius is found.

Tonythetirger583,
You are the kind of poster that this forum needs.

HOPE YOU STAY AROUND A VERY LONG TIME!

Wish we would cross paths one day and I would remember who pt109 is.....

I can understand the muzzle, Joey.
Each individual owns what he posts...if only to himself....and negative posters tend
to hurt themselves whether they perceive it or not.
I'm probably more polite on here than in person...I enjoy the woofing in an action
room.....and I can give it and I can take it.

You are the MODEL POSTER OF THE MAIN FORUM!

JoeyA

My only complaint is the same people every day push their products and tournaments on the main forum. I cane see a plug for them on the main forum once in awhile, but think if everyone in the for sale, like cues, tables, tournaments posted everything on the main forum also. I would be a mess, so why let a few get away with it? Johnnyt

I missed this excellent post as well. (Been doing too much fishing, I guess) I like the idea of a Main Forum with real names (authenticated). It wouldn't completely eliminate the ad hominem attacks but it would certainly put a dent in them. :D

Of course, then the regular Main Forum would be diminished as well. Maybe the name of the new forum should be called THE REAL MAIN FORUM.

I think discussions and differences of opinions are fine but when posters start getting personal and making attacks on other posters, they need to be muzzled, either permanently or until they have learned their lesson. If they promise that they have learned their lesson and make another mistake after that, ban them forever.

JoeyA

its simlpe- just create new login system on AZB where we have to login with facebook account :grin-square:

Haters keep on Hating ...great!

The two things I guess I never got was greed and hate. You wont find me knocking your action because it has nothing to do with me. If I don't like what I read....next subject.....or what I buy...next product.

I guess I will never understand snubbing a newbie to this forum or hating on someone elses small part of the world of pool.

Its another sad commentary about the state of pool and its many parts that are to me dysfunctional.

Hello
Noticed that in past few days the Main Forum http://forums.azbilliards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=6 have been populated by accessories , cues, systems, technical mumbo jumbo and buyers and sellers. The Main Forum is usually about players, tournaments and any pool industry information /news. Of the 25 threads on 1st page now, I see only about 20%-30% are about players , tourneys and industry information. All these technical accessories threads only attract micro niche audience of handful of enthusiasts, technical yahoos and snake oil salesmen so should stick to sub forums. Threads on Main Forum should be more generic and attract broader appeal. Showing overload of techie threads on Main Forum will turn off potential newbie members as the Main Forum
So what happened to those regular posters on Main Forum? Were they purged ? Did Donald Trump fire them?
Or were they just turned off by these techie threads that dominate the main forum?

I love that phrase, technical mumbo jumbo. What this forum needs is less technical mumbo jumbo and more discussion appealing to beer league ball bangers.

Topics like...

What is the drunkest you have ever been while winning a match?

How many ex convicts are on your league team?

How easy is it to pick up women in your league?

When all that technical mumbo jumbo makes your head hurt do you reach for drugs, alcohol or both?

I think all of those would be considered advanced topics in the current climate.

Very true
I shudder to think when that happens
Cos then the Main Forum will be a snake pit for orgies of snakes and snake oil salesmen
