I hope I am not breaking any rules. This was posted by Mr. Bond in another forum and I thought it was so good that it deserved a wider audience.

Ahh the good ole days.
When you could just knock the shit out of somebody and not get arrested.

Wild Bill was a Marshall in a wild west town. One night in the Saloon a cowboy said to him"I'm going to get drunk and kill you!" Wild Bill drew his gun and shot him dead between the eyes. Yup the good ole days.
Do you know why everyone was so polite in the wild west?

That was very considerate of Bill for that preemptive measure.
Think of the money that Bill saved him and the time it would have taken him to get drunk. Very neighborly of him. The money probably went for funeral expenses instead.

And now-a-days if you defend yourself,,police will put you in jail,,,fine you and then make you go to anger management class.

Thats the reason they only said "yep" and "nope" all the time.

Wild Bill Hickock, and a fellow by the name of Dave Tutt, got into a gunfight on the Public Square here in the city where I live.
Bill had lost his favorite pocket watch to Mr. Tutt in a poker game the night before the fight, and vowed to kill him if he ever saw him wearing it in public. Well, being the spunky little Southerner that he was (a Confederate spy during the war) our man Dave was standing out in front of the Courthouse the next day, with the watch in plain sight, when Bill came around the corner.
Words were exchanged, guns were drawn (I believe Hickock was using Navy Colts at the time), and shots were fired. Dave Tutt took one round in the chest and died several minutes later.
Wild Bill Hickock was arrested, charged, and tried for manslaughter, but the obviously partial jury acquitted him on the grounds of self-defense. Many believe that the actual reason for the shoot-out was not the watch, but a dispute over a woman. Who'd a thunk it?
A short time later he moved out West where you know the rest of the story. :)

You are correct. This was one of the very rare face to face gunfights of the old west. The interesting fact is that Bill shot that guy thru the heart at 75 yds with one shot. A hard thing to do with a modern pistol let alone a cap and ball Navy colt.

A. Did anybody ever think that Bill's problems were a result of him? Trouble follows!

2. "...he had to fight or acknowkedge that he was a coward an his exploits were bogus". AWESOME.

...reminds me of a Kenny Rogers song lol

its interesting that no shots were fired. Bill really must have been a serious bad-ass, or the seven men were drunken idiots, or the story has been fluffed up a lil' bit... (or all of the above lol)

its hard to imagine any human taking on seven people at once, especially with an injued leg. but on the other hand, if even half the things they say about Bill are true, maybe he did whip all seven of them....

whatever the case...i'd pay good money to have seen that in person !

The man fought Indians who were not out to beat him up but to kill or torture him to death.I think even if the story was fluffed a little, Wild Bill was not a man to mess with. And thank you for finding this and allowing me to post it in a forum with more exposure.

I agree, people used to be a whole lot more polite

It hasn't been that long ago that my old man had to get my granpa out of jail for whooping on the town sheriff. This is before you got sued, shot, or went to prison for this sort of thing. I'm not so sure all this politically correct stuff has been good for any of us. People sure used to be a whole lot more polite, especially around women. I have worked in factories all my life, so I am used to hearing rough talk, but all this 4 letter word stuff that seems to be so common, makes me feel uncomfortable, especially in front of women and kids. Guess I am just old fashioned. SteveD

Do not apologize for being a Gentleman. A lot of people today won't give another person the time of day because they haven't the good graces to look away from the little black (berry) box they are holding in their hands. Good reply. :)

I can't agree with the fighting being good for anything...but I do agree that our world has lost a good bit of common courtesy and we are worse off for it.

Most people believe the actual gunfight, between Hickock and Tutt, took place at a distance of some seventy-five yards, as Measureman has heretofore alluded.
Many historians now believe the true distance, shown in this documented photograph of the gunfight itself, to be accurate. :D

Hey Steamer do you have any of those "Miracle" cues I can try out? LOL.
I can not believe the OP really took that serously.
And the photo of this gunfight neither would have survived. Who is on the floor already? As a old west history buff I know a lot of things were made up or fluffed a bit. But Bill was a bad dude.
