When Matchroom handed the US Mosconi Cup captaincy to CJ Wiley they might have triggered off a series of events that could prove to be the biggest change in the sport for generations.
The 47 year old Texan has embraced the position and with an almost unanimous fan acceptance factor. You can feel a quickening of excitement.

This could be The Man to inspire a new generation of cuemen. With Shane, Dechaine locked in to the December showdown, CJ will be looking to see some of America’s Young Guns to do well enough in the US Open to put them in contention for the remaining spots.
These WILEYS WARRIORS will be the US heroes of the future. The American public will get behind them if they get a chance to take on the Euro Thunderers on even terms for the first time.
Come on Matchroom – give youth a chance..
if they do well enough in the final ranking event.

Way to go !!!

WILEYS WARRIORS vs. EURO THUNDERERS

Mr pro9dg, Sir:

I have always admired you, amongst your other qualities and experience, for the vivid language and crystal clear opinions - but this one might even make a history of “modern pool” proverbs, although it is, in a way, extremely risky for both sides.

I suppose now it is all down to the final score and, for the sake of the show, let’s hope that neither Team would “get the willies”

I suppose Wiley's Warriors is better than Wiley's Coyotes....

Tho maybe they can drop an Acme anvil on Team Europe....

Sorry. Couldn't help myself.

I am stoked about the Cup, for certain. Whoooooooo!

I am honored that you like my contribution.

CJ Wiley is an excellent choice for Captain of the U.S. Mosconi Cup Team. He will have a great opportunity to bring the American players together as a team and to motivate them to cueing excellence.

There is lots of work ahead for CJ and Team USA. Wish Matchroom Sports didn't wait until the last minute to pick the remaining 3 players. It would be a little easier for the Captain if they announced their "3" picks several months in advance of the event.

With no national men's professional tour, it makes getting the US Mosconi Cup Team together rather difficult.

Landon Shuffett is still young, but he, Shane, Mike Dechaine and others like them are the young lions that will shape the future of the Mosconi Cup Team. Archer is still playing STRONG, always plays well at the event, has a strong, stoic tv appearance and performs well under pressure so it is likely that he will remain on the team for all of those reasons.

There are a host of other young players that deserve to have their day in the sun like Brandon Shuff, Hunter Lombardo, Justin Hall, John Morra, Oscar Dominguez, Jeremy Sossei, Jonathan Pinegar.

The truth is that old fire-breathing salts like Earl Strickland, Dennis Hatch, Rodney Morris, John Schmidt, Shannon Daulton, Corey Deuel, Jeremy Jones, Charley Bryant etc. still have television appeal and talent to boot. Whether they are currently prepared to play at the high level that is required for the Mosconi Cup Team is another question.

This year the U.S. Mosconi Cup Team has a really good chance to shine with CJ as Captain. Wishing the very best for TEAM USA!

I could be wrong but I think the US Team has won FAR MORE Mosconi Cups than the European Team.

GO USA!

(And it would be only be right for USA to win another )

Joey, John Morra is Canadian. I agree with most of what you said though. I wonder how CJ is going to get the US team to gel together. How much time after the Open is the Mosconi Cup team announced?

Yeah, I know that and should know better.

Mosconi Cup event is first part of December so whenever they announce the other players it won't be soon enough.

I like the way you think.

"Wiley's Warriors" has kind of a ring to it!

I'm glad to see you've finally come to your senses, Doug and come around to our side to root for Team USA. I knew you would see the light!

I can see you now in the stands chanting, "USA, all the way. USA, all the way." I'm going to be looking for you, Doug, on TV to be wearing the right colors.

These pants would look cute on you!

That's not going to happen. :killingme:

Maybe Doug is more low key, I guess, for the pants. :)

Maybe something more conservative like a head scarf. Doug would look very handsome in this, don't you think?

Maybe it is time to open up the US options and become a North American Team to include Canada and Mexico. After all there have been nine countries represented on Team Europe since the Cup was started - England, Holland, Germany, Sweden, France, N Ireland, Malta, Spain and Russia.

Hold your horses! If there was a team to have Canada and Mexico, it would not be Team USA. No offense to my northern and southern friends, but I would not be a happy camper about that decision.

Granted, the interest in pool in America has been waning by mainstream industry, to include the BCA, the entity that is supposed to be representing America to the WPA and doesn't, but I'm not I'm not so sure I like to have other countries in the mix with Team USA.

It's like saying Hispanics and Latinos are the same. Well, they're not. You have Spaniards, Cubans, Mexicans, Dominican Republic folks, Venezuelans, Chileans, Peruvians, Costa Ricans, Panamanians, et cetrea.

This latest politically correct term of Asian Pacific Islanders is also not accurate. Are the Filipinos the same as, say, Chinese or Korean or Japanese?

If the Mathroom Sports decides to not have a Team USA anymore consisting of Americans, there ends the legacy of that event for me as an American. I won't be rooting for the Mexicans and the Canadians against Team Europe. In fact, isn't is quite revealing that it takes the entire European Union to even stand a chance against Team USA? Not one single country can do it on their own in Europe.

If and when this happens, there will be nothing left to shoot for in the U.S. as far as those precious "ranking points." Pool in America is now circling the drain.:sorry:

Do you know how many people actually play American pool in Europe? It isn't many. Even with only 2-300 semi serious players here in England, I'd say we're at least evens to beat the USA - and all our best cueists play snooker.

I think America will win this MC, but you lot need to get real in terms of which nations produce the talent.

Not to mention the entire european union is less than half the size of america in square footage, though they do have more people. All of france is smaller than texas.

the team has not been picked

JoeyA,
Is Landon Shuffett on the US team?

The team is not picked until after the US Open. People need to get off the idea of Landon being on the team. He is not even in the top 15 on the points list. He will not even be in the consideration. I am not bashing this exceptionally talented young man.

Read below

"Further down the ranking at 11th spot, veteran Johnny Archer will need a very big finish at the final event in the series - October's US Open - if he is to maintain his unbroken run of 14 successive Mosconi appearances."

When Matchroom handed the US Mosconi Cup captaincy to CJ Wiley .......

Just curious. What is Matchroom Sport and what is the process by which they nominated the US Captain of the Mosconi Cup?

I suspect that Matchroom is a European sports organization which runs the Mosconi Cup. I think having CJ is good, but suppose the US wanted another person as captain.

Thanks in advance.
