Will instructors give advice (on fundamentals) if you post a video of your shooting?

I am curious if anyone ever posts video's of themselves shooting, in hopes of receiving for online feedback on things that they might be doing wrong (with their stance for example, or other things in their game)?

Just curious.

Thanks.

Post something I am sure you will get advice from many.

I've done it and I know Sam Lambert has done so as well. People are extremely helpful and offer many advice.

You definitely will. Check out my thread about embarrassing myself and check out all the help that was offered to me. I was unable to post a video but everyone recommended that I should.

Post a video in the "ask an instructor" area and you will very likely get a lot of good feedback from the experts...and plenty of advice from league bangers as well. :grin-square:

trouble with asking for advice from such a huge group is who knows who will reply and how good will the advice be. there are A LOT of great people and instructors on this site and you will most likely get some great help. just please be aware that you may get some bad advice as well. and don't forget.... everyone is an instructor.

Justin, I did it and ended up becoming an instructor myself. Make sure the video includes several shots from the side where we can see how you hold the cue.

Thanks Boyersj. I think I need to get a good tri pod (to sit the camera on) and maybe a better camera. All I have right now is this old nikon coolpix 16mp camera, but it does record video. I think I need a much better camera. By the way, I never got the chance to see you play, when I was living in Evansville (if you are the same guy I am thinking of). I heard you were a very good player, and a great instructor. I kind of regret leaving Evansville. They had a good Friday night 9 ball tournament going on at O'brians, and a few other nice weekly tournaments around town at the bars.

I had been searching for the best (and cheapest) camera for videoing me and my buddies play. In the end it turned out I had the perfect solution in my pocket the whole time, my smartphone. I have an LG G4 which has one of the better cameras among smartphones, but it does an excellent job even though I use the lesser, front camera, rather than the much better rear camera (using the front, with the way I mount it, is just easier and the quality is still excellent).

I bought an adaptor for about $5 to hold the phone and give it a standard tripod screw mount. After that you can use a tripod or any number of other mounting options. I use a couple of things I had lying around from one of those gopro type cameras. My phone takes a 32Gb micro SD card. The video files seem to have a 4 Gb limit and that gives me about 45 minutes of video. But then all I have to do is hit the record button again and it starts with a new 4 Gb file. For power, I just use one of those power banks with USB connectors, plugged into my phone while it is videoing. I've never run out of juice, and when I am done the phone is generally still fully charged.

So, you may already have that better camera you think you need. My sense is that all smartphones have pretty good cameras for this application.

I'm planning a lesson with Scott Lee next time he is in my area, and he told me he videos the lesson and gives you DVD(s) of it, so I will be interested to see how his video set-up compares to mine. I've thought about posting video and asking for suggestion, but aside from the embarrassment factor (I'm not very good) I figure that since I am planning the lesson I should be patient and wait for that, rather than possibly getting off track with online advice.

Scott is a great instructor, my certifying instructor in fact. We use the same equipment, a video camera as a feed into a DVD recorder that has frame by frame capabilities. We also use a small HD tv to review critical portions of the lesson in detail (frame by frame). Being able to record the information directly to DVD is great and allows the student to take the recording with them.

I say this and truly mean it, be prepared to spend consistent time (an hour or so) by yourself at the table, EVERY day for at LEAST a couple weeks. You will learn a lot, much of it you won't like learning (oblivion is bliss). Always remember you were not satisfied with your game when you sought an instructor, so trust the process of implementing what is learned.

There was an instructor from Canada IIRC that offered this exact service pretty recently on this forum.

I think he took 30 or so different videos and offered his advice.

I'm sure someone else may remember this.

This kind of distance video coaching is also becoming more common in golf.

I did it twice now and both times I received helpful replies.

Go ahead, you won't regret it and most certainly will benefit from it.

If you do this with a smartphone what are the steps to get it from the phone to this forum?

( in tech dummy terms)

I might .....But I don't know if I want to deal with all the know it alls on here. I think if your going to try to teach someone you should at least be known for playing top level pool,( not just think you can in your own mind!!) But that's JMHO...John B.
