Windy City Open Updates PLEASE...?

Great win for Josh. He's not been in top form for a year or two and he didn't play up to his level as late as last weekend. He must have put in some time practicing during the week.

I?ve been over to the Windy City Open twice now, Saturday and Sunday evenings. It was pretty dead on both days, and I heard complaints from some of the players about the ?excessive? entry fees and in addition not liking to have to pay a $1 a game (quarter bar tables). Besides that, there are only about 3 decent exhibitors there this year selling their stuff. The last time I attended the Windy City Open a few years ago, it was crowded, organized, and packed with various exhibitors. I hope that next year will be a return to get the event back on track.

Another reason why this event might be off this year is because of competition from other tournaments.

Here are a couple more results....

Sure would like to know how things are coming along up there.
Danny Harriman defeated Josh Johnson in the Open 9-Ball division.Josh played very well though. He won the first set(He was on the loser side)and gave Danny fits in the second.Unfortunately for him though, beating Danny twice didn't happen as Harriman's champion mentality didn't allow him to crumble. In fact,I gained a lot of respect for Danny's game.He is very solid between the ears when competing.
In the 8-Ball,no masters division, the finals were very exciting.Chad Elston went against Billy Pinion.Billy was on the losers side and beat Chad the first set.Get this,he goes up on Chad in the second set 4-2(going to 5).I figured he had it licked. He was playing flawlessly! So he's up 4-2 and breaking.Breaks, makes a ball, and the cue ball ends up buried in the corner. He attempts to make a long difficult shot on the 13,which if he makes he will easily run out and win the tournament because the balls were spread very nice.He missed the ball and Chad ran out to make it 4-3.Chad breaks and runs out to make it hill-hill.Alternate break,so Billy got the last break. He slams them and nothing goes.Chad runs out to win the tournament.Congrats Chad!
Another thing that's noteworthy is the appearance of Jon Kucharo. He showed up and played in several events.Didn't win any(maybe some minis).I mention that because I haven't heard of or seen him in ages.He is one of them talents that I often wonder about.Other players of note that were there included Ike Runnels,Jeff Seargent,Tommy Hernandez.Really weren't that many champions this year.Maybe because of the short notice or time frame the event took place?Who knows.I had some fun though,as usual. Thanks Bob and Eydie for all your efforts in creating a tournamnet for the Chicago area pool players:)

I'm surprised to hear that Harriman & Ike could play in the event. It must not be closed to pro's. Even more odd because the rumor I've heard is Jesse Bowman is no longer eligible. Does any one have the true story about JB?

I believe it is open to anyone. Dennis Hatch and SVB played last year. I don't know about Jesse's ineligibility, but I do believe that he played last year.

THanks for the updates Onepocket73.

Eydie noted in another thread that Jesse and his wife just had another baby! Congrats BTW. She said that is why he wasn't there. He is elegable to play in the "open" events, but not the "Non Master" events.

Congrats to Josh on the 8-ball open win.

Hey Gil, Congratulations on the second place finish....Now that you beat Danny Harriman, you gotta give me all the breaks when we play one pocket..........^_^

Thanks Scottster...you know how rumors go. I knew about the baby, she was born on my birthday. I ended up banging some balls around with Jess this weekend and never thought to ask why he didn't go.

Yep it was slow, but better than I expected with only 2 1/2 weeks notice given to the players.

With Joes death, we had elected to cancel it. But at the last minute we desided to go through with it and have the New years Eve Bash in his memory. The bash went well. Great food, champagne and all you can drink. We are giving away 8 trips to The Bahamas to the winners of the scotch doubles tonight.

Twice now, we have been bombarded with snow, which detoured players. In fact it's snowing now.

Jacoby is here, he did great. I don't know about the others.

The entry fees are what they are and what they have been for 7 years now. The tables cost money to bring in, some players understand this, others don't. We take a small entry fee $5 to $10 and give out way more than that in cash and prizes.

The resort (Pheasant Run) has agreed to find sponsors to donate $$$$$ for next years event, so that will be a BIG PLUS to the draw.

Jesse is welcome to play in several events. He called me on Saturday, I didn't get a chance to call him back, so I don't know why he didn't come. It could be a cross between the new baby, the snow and the small turn out. But I don't know for sure.

In closing the majority of -players had a good time. There are always some whiners that you can't make happy. I can go to bed knowing that we have done the best we can do and sleep well with that said.

Happy New Year Eydie I wish you a Great 2008! I heard the venue is absolutely awesome, and a shame that more players didn't show.
Take care,

I have no information about that particular tournament but I know that Jesse and Josh played in the McDermott tournament in Galesburg a couple weeks back and that Kucharo was not allowed to play. He had to spend the day watching. Jesse didn't cash... Josh may have... can't remember.

tanner, if i would have had more time theres no doubt we could have made a good score. btw, was it them that wanted the 7-8 wild?? i dont remember. we should have made it call 7-8. ah well, we'll get em next time. man, i couldnt shoot for crap.... it was borderline embarassing...lol. i think those bud lights got in the way. wish you were going to the derby bro... we'd have a blast.

though the turnout was low it was a very strong field.it was a great time as usual with a staff doing all they could to keep action going. they were making up events as they went to keep all as busy as they wanted thanks Eydie Bob John, Nick and whoever else I forgot what an effort.
Josh played some of the best 8 ball I have seen in one 3 match stretch, race to 6, i saw him miss a total of 3 shots. one of those matchs he only missed perfect position once and missed no shots wow he made champions look normal.

thanks again for the staffs efforts it was a good time
