wishing the best for Jay Helfert in the .....

First of all, you guys blow me away with all the good wishes. Unfortunately, a set of Kings over my set of Queens sent me to the rail last night. The flop came K,Q,3. I had a Monster! He made a smallish bet to me and I raised him. He hemmed and hawed and then reraised me, and I put him all in, fully expecting to see A,K. He showed me K,K instead.

I thought about it afterward, and there was no way I could get away from this hand. Any poker player probably knows this. Oh well, I won a Satellite for a $1,000 Second Chance event tomorrow, so I ain't quite dead yet.

They only had about 5-6,000 players this year for the Main Event, considerably down from last year. Probably due to the fact that they didn't get nearly as many players from internet sites this year.

I did hear about the shooting at New York, New York. All over the news here. Luckily some military trained guy and a couple of off duty cops brought him down, when he was reloading. Otherwise, they may have been many deaths.

Thanks again you guys. As they say in Brooklyn, "Wait till next year".

what was the pre-flop bet? who bet it? anyone raised?

I will always put my money in if there's only one way to lose. K-Q-rag rainbow
flop with me holding a pair of Hiltons (Paris and Nikki :p ) will always get me.
There's no way you can get me to fold...

Anyway, there's always next year Jay! :D

I am not sure if you know this guy or not, but his name is Mike, and I can't remember his last name.

Everybody seems to know him in Vegas, to include the casino pit bosses. He's made it to the final tables and TV rounds several times. :D

At any rate, he's a short fellow, and looks just like and talks just like Joe Pesci. Very jovial guy and nice as can be. I liked him a lot when I first met him last year. We got a call last night from Vegas, and Mike is currently 16 in the chip-holdings, and there are only 600-plus players left in the event. Of course, Keith is already putting in his bite for a jelly roll for friendship's sake in case Mike wins the whole shebang. :o

His full name, I just learned, is Mike Lane. He's still in the poker tournament at Rio. Keith wants to pay $17.95 to watch the finals on PPV! :o

At least you recouped some of your funds. Better luck next year, Jay! :)

I'm pretty sure you're talking about Mike Sica, an ex pool player. He won the WSOP Seniors a few years back for 500K. Now, he plays full time, and does fairly well. Strictly a tournament player, and hits all the Vegas events.

Jay, there are 3 pool players from Chicago there playing. Mike "Shoes" Gambony, Chris Gentile, and Steve the "Dasher. Any idea how they are doing?

Sorry Freddie, I have no idea. I'm safely home now. Just a little lighter.

Thanks for sharing your great adventure, Jay. I don't know if I would have played your Q's any differently either, even though they weren't the nuts, I don't think I could've gotten off of them. Last time I played in Vegas, I lost my stack with pocket Q's...hit the top set on the flop, which also had a 6 in it, and another 6 came on the turn, got reraised, went all in, lost to 4-6's. That's poker. :p

OUCH AND DOUBLE OUCH!!!

You probably mean Mike Laing. He drinks like a fish and is very funny at the table. I played with him in Vegas a few years back and he led after day one of the main event a couple of years ago. I have heard people say that if he didnt drink so much then he really would be a force.

That's the guy. Thanks Vette. I have played with him and even staked him once in a satellite. He is a very funny guy at the table, and was once a feared No-Limit player as well. He hasn't done much in several years, but does occasionally make the money.

This just in...

Just took a message from Keith's roving Vegas reporter, Mr. Ronnie Allen himsel, who is in Vegas and is making the rounds, especially to Rio.

He said Mike is still in the game, has about $100,000 in chips. Ronnie said -- and THIS IS HEARSAY -- that Mike is guaranted $100,000 becuase they pay out 600 spots. I am sure Mike is going to have a lot of cheerleaders now. If Keith was there, he'd be in the front row! :D

I did like the guy, only met him once, but he was jovial and nice. I didn't think he drinking was offensive one bit. In fact, he was kind of cute in his own way. If he wins this poker tournament, he's going to look even cuter! :D

There are 337 players left and Mike is in 264th with 155,000. Chip leader has 2,398,000. He is guaranteed $39,445 right now. Needs a couple of early double ups today since the blinds are 4,000/8,000 with 1,000 ante.

ESPN is televising the Final Table live at 3PM EST on Tuesday July 17. It's on Pay Per View for $17.95. This is a first for them, and for the WSOP. I wonder if they will show the hole cards. That could create a problem. They would have to ban all cell phones for spectators also.

They will probably be on a five minute delay in order to make certain that no advice is given (or card signals) during play at the FT.

I also got 5th in the $2,000 Limit Hold'em in 2003 and 6th in the $1,500 Hi-Lo Split in 2004. Three final tables in three years at the WSOP. All downhill since then :). Actually I haven't been playing as much the last couple of years.

I only played three events this year and got three tables out of the money in the $1,500 7 Card Stud. That was my highlight. I did chop up a $200 tourney at Caesars after I got knocked out of the Main Event. It paid $2,500. Small consolation.
