WNT Hanoi Open 2025, Vietnam, Oct 7-12

Biado and Labutis are playing like they both want to throw the match lol, missing everything under the sun.

Must be all the traveling these past few weeks, they seem tired and not confident, just like many other players in this tourney.

The table is playing super tough though, those pockets are nice and tight.

I'm a bit surprised at how empty the arena is, especially since it's in Vietnam. Could it be a bad time of day or ticket prices being too high?

I can only guess:

1) it's getting late
2) no more vietnamese left in the tournament
3) no more Fedor

#2 is probably the big one. There was a big crowd earlier today.

How can the ref(s) make this terrible call? Referee Pool Physics 101. There is no way the CB would deviate to the left like that if it hit the 4-ball first and the 9-ball second. Lechner got robbed.

feel bad for Max Lechner, he has been playing so well in this tournament

I messaged the ref right away, he was the one who called foul on Shaw at Peri Open last week, he said he was not sure, and he paused the match and consulted ref Marcel, after reviewing a few times, Marcel said it's good hit

great respect to Max and how he accepted the decision

In real time, I must concede that it was not an easy call to make. With video review, however, I thought the call was so obvious they would call a foul within ten seconds. No way the nine travels that far on a good hit of the four ball. I can only wonder what their reasoning was.

I've noted before on this forum that one pool refereeing skill needed that has little application to refereeing snooker is the ability to call close hits. The situation nearly never comes up in snooker, but it comes up a lot in pool.

I believe the ref could not tell, so they treated it as if the cue ball hit both the 4 and 9 at the same time, or gave the shooter benefit of the doubt

FYI, a simultaneous hit is a foul under the rules. It was an awful, indefensible, call.

new 2025 WPA rules, simultaneous hit is deemed good hit

and per new WNT rules, which based on WPA rules, benefit of the doubt goes to the shooter when it is so close to call

I read these set of rules last week

Thanks for the info on the updated rules. Still, there was no doubt on this occasion. The nine was clearly hit first and could never have moved as far as it did on a legal hit of the four. Shame on the refs for making an awful call at a big moment in a tournament.

As Bob Jewett (in post #233), who is perhaps the world's greatest authority on the rules of pool has observed, the referee should never get this one wrong.

Referee mistakes do happen, but rarely when a call is this obvious.

Looks like Neuhausen is a lock for the Reyes Cup since FSR and Souto are out.

I'm sure he'll be picked for the Mosconi Cup as well. Especially if he takes down this event, it would be 2 back to back WNT majors.

No pool referee should ever get this one wrong.
I agree, but we have seen Marcel made similarly bad calls

Agreed, and I've noted before, when a referee has a snooker background, he has not been trained for or had to deal very often with the "close hit" call that comes up so often in pool. Marcel is a consummate professional and has consistently improved as a referee, but in this regard, he remains a work in progress.

Labutis vs Biado was a bit of a horror show, but I thought Pijus was the slightly better player and deserved to advance to the semis. He best plan on making fewer errors than this against Robbie Capito tomorrow.

I feel like all four semifinalists have a legitimate shot to hoist the trophy tomorrow.

On a side note, I thought Scott Frost's commentary in the Biado vs Labutis match was superb.

This call was brutally bad. Indefensible.

That said, I think Marcel usually gets it right. The only ones I can think of before this that he got wrong are the shot where Shane was kicking at the ball and made a good hit, or at least one that could not be called a foul, and their bizarre inadvertent miss cue jump is a foul call, which I believe the WPA has now clarified.
