WNT Hanoi Open 2025, Vietnam, Oct 7-12

guys, about the shot clock an referees, there is only dedicated refs on TTV table

T1 and T2 refs only do racking, and watch the sensitive shots if the players request... however the players can spot fouls from the opponent and request a ruling, in this case livestream replays can be used (if any)... just like the foul Gomez called on Sky

from tomorrow, Last 16, 2 tables will be played at same time, and both will have refs and shot clocks

I dont understand why they dont put shot clocks on T1 and T2, at least from Last 64, it is necessary

these are the slowest tables i've seen in an MR event. i can imagine the western players complaining loudly on social media. but that's the deal, they travelled to vietnam. another time it'll be on their homecourt
They may be slow, but they are tough boxes. Tight pockets that will reject a ball just like a Diamond table does. Every time I see someone jacking up to shoot a long draw shot, it's a risky shot, very missable. The side pockets look like off a snooker table. From any kind of angle they are triple tough. Slow reminds me of the old days when you had to have a stroke to move the cue ball around the table. Some's got it and some don't. I kind of like these Rasson tables.

Wow, I had no idea. Pulling in the young crowd, I guess.

Now, explain the Sky (over SVB) pick.

I'm so glad I paid lots of money to go see the best marketing opportunities battle it out.
If you think that's bad, you should check out the eSports world. It's literally about followers over skills when it comes to any special events. But unfortunately, that's the world we live in.

I personally believe picking AJ will prove a mistake

Matchroom has been promoting their ranking, their order of merit... and they are going against it

earlier this year, they announced the truce with WPA, but it seems they will never get over it... if they call for players' freedom then they must consider their rankings, no matter where they play, as long as they have earned enough points.

This year's Reyes teams are all about hand-picked, and it will harm Matchroom in the long run when fewer and fewer players will believe in the chances Matchroom have promised... they would not have chances to play in Reyes Cup or Mosconi Cup because it will not be based on WNT ranking or order of merit.

You won't find this rule on any website, and Frazer has never confirmed it. But supposedly any player who wants an invite to Reyes/Mosconi has to play in most/all big WNT events to qualify.

If so, this rules out Filler, Kledio Kaci and SVB for the Mosconi.
Supposedly a few years back Matchroom had wording in player contracts I think it was that gave them the power to ban any player from their tour who played in any non-Matchroom 9-ball event (or maybe it was any non-Matchroom event, can't recall which).

2) SVB really wasn't that interested in playing. Would rather take off after the world 8b and go ice fishing or whatever. Matchroom then had to choose the next best US-born marketing opportunity.

I'm actually leaning towards believing #2, but time will tell. If SVB is off Mosconi, too, then either Matchroom is blinded by their own power, or expect an SVB retirement speech. Not sure which situation would be worse.
I have no idea what is going on this year regarding Matchroom or SVB, but it is not a total secret that SVB does not like the Mosconi Cup at all, and for years has only played because he has been begged to and/or felt pressured to have to.

i believe they are the same rassons they had in saudi, same pocket size, but the difference is huge. i don't mind it. adapting becomes key, and many big names failed to do that

if it is a true wildcard and he picked Manas, whats the problem? he is a promising up and coming player, doesn't hurt to put him on the big stage. and i'll say it again if svb wants to play, he'll be there. jordan rules apply

because he should pick a wildcard that improves their chances to win?

Just finished watching Neuhausen vs. An and I'm surprised more people are not talking about him.
Jay, I sense that Moritz Neuhausen is new on your radar, but he has played well for a full year now, including a) silver at the International 9ball, b) a win at the Premier League Pool event, and a win at the Peri. Here's a post I made this January, responding to Mike Page's post about who he thinks the next great players will be. I was surprised he had left out Neuhausen, and responded thusly:

... What I've seen in the future greats time and time again is a conceptualization process that is evolving methodically and accurately and a player that constantly shows more knowledge across the critical skills of pattern play and defense than they did in the past. Gradual increases in conceptualization and decision making can take a long time to show up on the scoreboard, but I watch players closely enough and often enough that I can see who appears to be on the right trajectory with respect to these skills.

I've seen Top 100 players in the world who were clearly not developing constructively in these areas and knew they would never get anywhere near the top. Sometimes, however, I saw lesser players that were clearly on the right track and I knew that, eventually, they would get there.

Let's compare three players, all ranked between 43 and 52 based on Fargo.

Robbie Capito, #52 in the world using Fargo rate, is a fine player and he can run the table as well as many of the most elite, but to me, he qualifies as one not developing much in conceptualization and decision-making skills, and unless that changes, I am guessing he will never crack the Fargo Top 20. Pijus Labutis, #43 in the world based on Fargo, on the other hand, is becoming more and more refined in his conceptualization and decision-making skills, so I would not be surprised in the least if he cracks the Fargo Top 20 down the road. A player that is developing much more impressively in conceptualization and decision-making skills is Mortiz Neuhausen, #48 in the world based on Fargo. Based on what I see from him, I'll be shocked if he does not crack the Fargo Top 20 at some point...
Interestingly, all three players I noted (Capito, Labutis, Neuhausen) are among the last sixteen in Hanoi. Let's see who takes the next step forward. As you can see, however, the player for whom I was most bullish was Neuhausen. I'm not sure any of us are surprised by his fine play at this point.

Absolutely brutal day for the hometown Vietnamese players. Out of 8 total Vietnamese entering the last 32, only Dinh Chan Kiet (who beat Raga and Roda) survived going into the last 16. He'll be playing Souto on the TV table tomorrow.

I see your point, but Manas has done nothing in the WNT to deserve it. No high finishes whatsoever. He's only gone past the round of 32 in a major event once, in 2024 in Hanoi.

A player should have some bare minimum credentials aside from the number of FB followers.

Jefrey Roda and Bernie Regalario have a lot more points and much higher finishes than Manas. Baoanan, too. I am sure all three want to play in the Reyes.

The winning team also gets more money. Sure hope AJ doesn't cause Team Asia to lose!

Only Duong was a clear favorite to advance. And he should have. Good showing for Vietnam, but the players who lost were not good enough to go much further.

and the easy guaranteed nice pay check.

To be fair, MR really has only emphasized this with the Mosconi. In that event, the rules are still the same. Top three point getters get automatic bids (leaving the participation rule aside). Then there are two wild cards.

The Reyes is a work in progress. I don't like the World Team concept or the use of three wildcards, but it's early days.

fair. honestly when the reyes cup was announced I was hoping it would be phillpines vs the world, they certainly have enough quality players.

yea but they can't treat early days reyes cup like early days mosconi cup. where they brought in big name snooker players on the euro side and legacy USA pool players on the US side (lou butera, mike massey, etc). that made sense then, in the inception. it makes zero sense now. going by social media following, it's laughable

As I feared, Skyler was named to Team World for the Reyes Cup.

This has turned into a joke, frankly. AJ Manas and Sky don't deserve to be any where near the Reyes Cup.
Skyler has been treating pool like a joke for years now. Why he keeps getting picked for Mosconi and/or Reyes Cup is beyond me.
