WNT Hanoi Open 2025, Vietnam, Oct 7-12

This schedule conflict is regrettable, but as a viewer, the choice is easy. I'll be paying a lot more attention to the Hanoi Open than the World 8-ball. Eight ball on the big tables is way too easy for the top pros and amounts to a breaking contest that is not easy to watch. Still, it's easy to understand why some of the most elite would rather chase a world title than a WNT major.

I can't wait for the 2025 Hanoi Open, a truly elite event, to begin! I'm sure that, as usual, Matchroom will stage an incomparable event.
In the World Eight Ball they should at least play "take what you make." Add some level of skill to it, otherwise it's a joke.

the weather is showing in the table conditions, cloth is slow, position play is short. this may favor the local / south asian players, who are also more familiar with the mr sung tables

what was ivica putnik's deal with the tape measure? did not get that at all. is he implying tables are set lower to favor asian players?

Yeah I just saw that!! He has the tape in his pocket so was obviously planned or something he does all the time? I don’t know him, is he known for sharking? He didn’t say anything afterwards so it must have been “regulation “ height, if there is such a thing.
Plus he had all the time in the warm up strokes or whilst getting ready to measure it, rather than waiting for the lag!

‘Take what you make’ adds luck to it…..where’s the skill?
Following the break, one suit is easier to run and the other is harder (forget for a minute that the players won't always agree which is which).

The two ways we tend to play 8-Ball are
(1) Open table --player never shoots the hard suit
(2) Take-what-you-make --player shoots the hard suit roughly half the time

There is a third way that, IMO, we should be doing at the pro level or any time 8-Ball is too easy (like 700+ players on 7-foot table)

(3) Opponent assigns suit --this way the player at the table after the break shoots the hard suit every time

This is a simple modification that would make 8-Ball more interesting at the pro level.

As opposed to having an open table and taking either stripes or solids. You must know better than to ask a question like that.
I saw Ronnie Wiseman make five low balls on the break once….he was hooked on the two low balls…he ran out on high balls.
….why should he be a huge under dog for making an excellent break?

Sky looks good. I think he was embarrassed by his Florida Open play. He’s been sharp in Vietnam.
Guess I spoke too soon. Sky got sent to the loser's side by a Filipino player named Christian Gariando. Fargo is listed at 704, with a low robustness.

Of course, there are tons of great players in the Philippines not known outside the country. But Gariando has very little presence on the web. Didnt see the match, so who knows what went wrong.

Sky plays another Pinoy next, Jesson Marabi, with a higher Fargo than Gariando.

Once again, Tyler Styer lost an opening match at a big major. This is a recurring trend with him. He tends to get to the second stage, but he sure makes it harder on himself.

His opponent was Nguyen Khanh Hoang. Fargo of 756 with low robustness. Ty is at 790, so maybe not a big upset.

Ty did win his first loser side match.

Big Mosconi implications for Lukas Fracasso Verner. Needs one more win to get to the knockout stage.

I'd actually call that a lucky break.

You would change the rule to make the game tougher and more interesting. Just like the rule changes to go to the break box and to put the 9 on the headspot. Or to tighten the pockets.

Disappointing to see alot of disregard for 8ball in the comments. Anyway for the Hanoi, given the field I guess we'll see what Fred does, can yapp win another title or does someone need new emerge. I'm watch the 10ball doubles, 9ball fatigue

It has nothing to do with disregard. I don't really like watching pros play 8 ball. I think it is too easy for them. Others evidently think the same. Not going to lie about it.

Nine ball is far more exciting and interesting to me, and no one puts on a big event better than MR.

If you have 9 ball, fatigue, so be it. To me, it's sort of like an NFL football fan saying he has NFL football fatigue. But to each his own.

Seems like this would take away some, and in some cases most, of the advantage that the better player has, effectively acting as a handicap of sorts. Hard for me to ever get behind that for any reason.

he was making a statement it seemed. i didn't know it was a thing, other than i've heard about tables being lower in some places in philippines. maybe something that's talked about among the pros, or maybe just something in his mind

I feel that 8-ball should stay at a league level…..it wouldn’t be the first game that the top players beat.
I would really like to see 10-ball come into its own…but without call shots or jump….like the DCC.

Take what you make punishes good breaks. Example, make 3 solids, squat the cueball, have no shot on a solid, you lose the game for breaking good. 8ball should always be played open after break and alternate break. Mistakes are heavily punished so stop making mistakes and hold your serve, simple.

Watching two great players hold their serves, trading blows, going hill hill is awesome.

No huge upsets at Hanoi on the first day (really, two days worth of events due to rain delay). A few notables were sent to the loser's bracket, but these players are all still alive.

Tyler Styer
Skyler Woodward
Aleksa Pecelj
Michael Baoanon
Jonas Souto
Oliver Szolnoki
Mickey Krause
AJ Manas

Styer does not have an easy path forward, but he's better than the next two guys he would play (Chinakhov, Bongers).

Sky has a much easier path to the final 64. Ditto for Krause.

AJ Manas and Pecelj are on a course to meet.

Souto could end up needing to beat Wielinksi or Harry Vergara to get thru.

I'm spinning my wheels to come up with a possible Cinderella story at the Hanoi Open.

Off a double hill loss in the quarterfinals of the Peri Open, in which he beat Fedor Gorst, I think Robbie Capito might be a player to watch at the Hanoi Open. His form is very strong right now,

Still, Yapp, who has been near unbeatable in WNT play this year will likely be in Robbie's draw, so it will not come easy.

Speaking of Thomas Bongers, I'd say he is in better form than Styer recently. Ruslan could also give Tyler a match, but he apparently struggled with table conditions vs Capito at times, and still in search of a decent break shot.
