Well, the curtain will close Sunday on another WPBA season, and a great one it has been.

As you all know, the ladies of the WPBA all aspire to win an "SJM award" at the end of the year (no, these awards are not recognized by the WPBA). Let's see where the ladies stand entering play at the Nationals.

SJM Player of the Year

Nominees: Allison Fisher, Karen Corr, Xiaoting Pan

Overview: Both Allison and Karen bombed at the world championships. Fisher won at WPBA Florida and the US Open. Corr won at the BCA "Enjoypool.com" Open, at WPBA Oklahoma and also won at the Challenge of Champions. Xiaoting Pan won at WPBA Michigan City and also won the World Championship.

This is a close player of the Year race, and Karen certainly has the inside track entering the Nationals. A win at the Nationals by Fisher or Pan could change that.

After Allison Fisher's win at the Nationals, the SJM award goes to .......... Allison Fisher

SJM WPBA Rookie of the Year

Nominees: Rachael Abbink, Joanne Ashton

Each began making their mark on the tour this year, and each looks poised for success in 2008.

And the SJM award goes to .......... Rachael Abbink

SJM WPBA Most Improved Player Award

Nominees: Sarah Ellerby, Anna Kostanian, Liz Ford

Overview: This is really close. Sarah Ellerby had a breakout year and presently sits as the #8 ranked player on the tour. Anna Kostanian cracked the Top 16 and showed she's one to be reckoned with for years to come. Liz Ford is playing well and looks poised to have a strong finish at the Nationals.

And the SJM Award Goes to.............. Anna Kostanian

Congratulations to the winners and to all the nominees.

Player of the Year:
Nominees: Allison Fisher, Karen Corr, Xiao Ting Pan

My choice at this moment is Xiao Ting Pan. She has fared better than Allison and Corr in WPBA events this year, and she has a true World Championship.

Rookie of the Year:
Nominees: Rachael Abbink, Joanne Ashton

My choice goes to Joanne Ashton. Joanne won 3 events before breaking into the WPBA this year. Joanne is the true rookie this year.

Rachael has been playing in WPBA events since 2004; therefore, I would not consider her to be a rookie.

Most Improved Player Award:
Nominees: Sarah Ellerby, Anna Kostanian

My choice goes to: Anna Kostanian.

Although when comparing Sarah's and Anna's 2007 achievements versus 2006 archievement (basically no improvement for both), Anna has cracked into the top 16 versus Sarah already being an established player in the WPBA tour. Sarah having WPBA winnings since 2003, while Anna started only 2 years ago. My definite choice is Anna.

I have tabulated data about all these players. If you want my info, please send me a PM or email to juegabillar@yahoo.com

SJM Player of the Year

Between Corr and Fisher. The player finishing higher at the Nationals

SJM WPBA Rookie of the Year

Abbink

SJM WPBA Most Improved Player Award

NO ONE has worked harder to improve.

My Dark Horse Pic!

My vote for player of the year would be Kelly Fisher...having gone through such personal crisis this year, missing the BCA event...if she wins this event (which currently looks like she has a better chance of making the to 16 than Xpan) I would say Kelly all the way...

As far as rookie, I can't say either of your choices have really impressed me. I do think Caroline Pao has been coming a long slowly but surely...she had a tough intro onto the tour, drawing Allison in the first round, maybe 3 or 4 times in a row! She has also had some very close losses, to some very good players, including a 8-9 to Monica just yesterday. Of course I am biased, being she is a close friend so I just won't vote on this one ;)...

Most Improved, I would go with Anna. I also think Megan Minerich has may some big strides this year as well.

Entering Sunday's play, here are my thoughts. I'm thinking Ashton for Rookie of the Year, Kostanian for most improved.

Player of the Year is wide open. Karen could have put it away here but has been eliminated. I'm thinking that if Allison wins today, her three titles inclusive of the Nationals gets it done. If Xiaoting Pan wins today, three titles including the World Championship and the Nationals gets it done. If neither wins today, Karen Corr will likely bag the SJM award.

They made Ashton the rookie of the year...WHY? Who picks rookie of the year? Johnnyt

sjm,
Hard to disagree with the results. I will say there is one GLARING OMISSION from your list: WPBA Fan of the Year = sjm. (perhaps this one was retired after 20 or 30 straight wins????)
