Womens pool

Hi Folks, just wondering what your opinion was about womens pool, we have started to get a lot of womens pool on Sky sports here in the UK, it is of a good standard and i enjoy watching it, but what bothers me is that the audience clap every shot, even the most simple roll into the corner pocket. Do the women players find this patronising? It just makes me want to switch off. Your thoughts please :)

I noticed this earlier this evening...

I noticed this earlier this evening... But is was in the USA in a game that Jennifer
Baretta (sp?) was playing. A pretty routine shot in the corner, coming straight across
the table with the cue ball.

I saw another shot that was made, and position was terrible, but the applause started before
the cue ball even stopped rolling. I think it might have been Jeanette shooting.

I think the general public does not play pool, and they are very impressed easily in the
domain of pool. And, of course if someone is attractive, that just adds to it.

Look at Alison Fisher, i bet she could win a wpc, I'm not kidding, i rarely see any flaws in her game if any... she is as good and better then most male players in my opinion.

Plus she is a good trick shot artist.

Doesn't get much better then Alison.

That is my point exactly, some of the top women are every bit as good as the men, it would be interesting to hear from some women players as to how they feel about this applause all the time. it shouldn't be right that they applaude a simple shot just because they are women and they made the shot. You don't hear that in the mens game.

True but instead of trying to get people to stop clapping in womens games, they should get people to clap as much in mens games then womens games, i think.

Always nice to see a lively crowd

Ps: is lively a word?

I believe they are told to clap by someone on the TV producing end. Some AZer's go to the events, I'm sure they would know. But I agree, It's way over the top. Johnnyt

I can't believe that never crossed my mind

I have heard rumor that they have highly trainned ninjas that sneek around and cattle prod those how don't clap. They are warned of this, and after thi first few screeches of pain they all come around. And as we all know the people that go tho these matched are quite quick, and start to clap to keep themselves safe from those pesty ninjas (ninjas scare me).

Billiardpete out

Bet you don't turn off golf after the fans cheer for a two foot putt holed, even one for bogey.

Bet you don't turn off after the fans cheer a foul shot made in pro basketball, even though it's an 80% proporsition, even 90% for a select few.

If you watch football, does it piss you off when fans cheer the extra point kick after the touchdown? It's better than a 98% proposition.

Odds are you don't, because the fans at any sporting event cheer for even the simplest accomplishments as long as they advasnce the cause of whoever they are cheering for. Paying sports fans, some knowledgeable and some extremely unknowledgeable, cheer as they please.

I attend a lot of women's pool events, and the fans are great. Women's pro pool is a great product, and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. Stay the course and accept the fact that fans will be fans.

Last night in the Skins on TV, Johnny Archer misses a shot and the crowd claps-Johnny is heard to say "i love it when they clap on a miss", clearly irritated.

Fans are the greatest asset to a sport, like it or not, they are the key to the success of the tour. I like it when I see lots of fans and that they are having fun, such as during any and all WPBA events.

The WPBA people have put in an unbelivable effort making the tour a great product, and I am sure the girls on the tour understand the importance of fans to its success.

Go to a Mosconi Cup where the player antics are scripted and the audience is told to move closer and to make wild maniacal cheers and aplaud - like wrestling.

Women's Pool

Last night, I watched Jennifer Baretta shoot some pretty solid pool in the Texas Holdem matches. She made some real nice outs, that I think only the very top tier of women players could make. Her game has really come up, and whoever is coaching her is doing a good job. And it doesn't hurt that she is attractive and in good shape.

There were several times I thought she would miss on some shots, but she didn't (rail first shots, long banks, difficult cuts), and I had to readjust my perspective about her competitiveness. I was impressed.

How come European and Japanese and Filapino audience matches always seem more exciting than ours? Because they show their enthusiasm more than USA audience matches. Listen to the Japanese commentators some time ... LOL ;)

I respect women's pool very much and I'd actually like to see co-ed games become a mainstay.

But sadly, I haven't met a really good female shooter yet. We have a few in my league but none of them take the game seriously. I suspect that the regional manager for my area's Fast Eddie's, Summer, can play but I haven't seen her shoot yet.

I suppose its a good thing that I haven't met any harcore female players yet... cus if any of them beat me I'll have to ask them to marry me and I'm not ready for that kind of commitment :)

I did see a girl at Legends Sports Bar the other day who walked in ALONE with a cue case over her shoulder. I swooned. :D

If you haven't seen a good woman pool player yet, you either don't get out much, go to the wrong places,or your very good. There are a ton of them out there. Johnnyt

Well I've never been to a big tournament... or to a tournament at all actually. And no, I don't get around much sadly... I mainly play at my pool hall cus I get free pool from Sun-Thur.

I'm still fairly new to the game (year and a half or so) but I hope soon to play in a real league and hit up more and more tournaments.

How many good women players make a ton?

How many good women players make a ton? If they average 125 pounds each, that makes a
total of about 16, and we need more!

But seriously, in my mind, forcing an audience's reaction is just adding to the "silliness factor"
of pool. In my opinion, in the not too distant past, when pool was very popular, the audience was
not "programmed", and in fact was extremely quiet during a match. This is just another example
of trying to change the great game of pool, and how it is perceived, and contributes to
the decline of popularity in the long run. If spectators do not realize the intensity and focus
required to play top-notch, near-perfect pool, than they will never get the proper impression,
and the true nature of the game.
