On one end, or both, tie a spring to the cotton string/wire. It will keep the string/wire tight and you won't necessarily need to be quite so precise with the length of string/wire. Works well if you hang your beads away from the wall or ceiling...not rubbing.

Good idea about the spring! Thanks!

I was thinking of ideas and I wondered if I could feed a steel wire through the middle of a string so it'll have strength and look more classic.

You don't want to hang them next to a wall mount them low enough to move by hand unless you want that wall to full of chalk marks. The beads are made to be able to move with the cue stick.

The box idea would be the best way. Have a lower rod with other markers that represent segments of 50. You could also have another set to mark sets won.

If you go to a hardware store, you can buy some of that cord with the foam core inside of it. Looks like parachute cord. If you are carefull, you can remove the foam and thread a wire into that woven exterior shell. It will compress to fit tightly on the wire when drawn tight. Might give you the look you are looking for. Of course, it's nylon and usually multi-colored so you might not want anything that fancy. Just a though.

beads

I have the cheap ass plastic beads. I have to admit that the wooden ones look a lot nicer.

I made a frame from 1X2 red oak from Lowes. The frame is screwed and glued together. The wire is Radio Shack aluminum ground wire. Any wire will do and it won't wear the beads. The only problem is when you are picking off the beads with your cue. You have to be careful no to ding the shaft on your cue.

The balls are whiffle golf balls.

We went through this when we were setting up the beads at Society Billiards. Personally, I think steel rods are the best way to go. You can find them at Home Depot. You'll want unthreaded plain steel rods, the thinnest available. We have them connected to the chains that hold up the light shade. You'll just need clamps at both ends of each rod to keep it in place.

Something like this:

Okay, this is actually a harder project then I thought. I went to Home Depot today and after spending an hour in the store, I bought steel wire (not rod) that's bendable but takes a lot to bend it and mounting hardware for the back of the board if I mount these to a board.

I couldn't figure out a way to hang them from a board. I need some kind of hooks or brackets to hang the beads with the crown eyelets from. I'll use the steel wire for the beads, but how can I keep the wire stationary? What could I use for brackets with hooks to hang the wire of beads out from the board? I want it to look nice. Something proud to hang on the wall and enjoy.

I wish I could have found a way to use something other then steel wire. I like cotton rope and brass or copper rods, but the cotton will stretch and I can't find anything in brass or copper that would look nice.

Anyone any good ideas to share?

Beads

LOL thanks for the honest advice! Actually I was more interested in creative ways people have set these up. I can't decide if I want to hang them from the ceiling like I've seen or just along a wall.

Anyone also know a place where I can get extra beads?

Beads should go above table probably on the wires that hang the light. As soon as you score your there and reach up and move a bead instead of walking to a wall. I think most players love the old school beads plus it's easy for spectators to see the score. Old school is always good. Grandpa knew best!!

I'm still kinda thinking of doing a wall mount though. I like the idea of not putting holes in my ceiling right now.

Although... if I just did the ceiling thing it would be MUCH easier.

Any ideas for a wall mount?

Okay if you buy a score hanging kit it comes with two screw in hooks, turnbuckle, steel cable, and crimp on ferrules. I guess I could always go to the local hardware store again are piece together what the kit comes with. Nylon coated cable would be better though.
