Working out with weights, HELP ME

I am a 17 year old kid in high school, I hang out with friends and stuff and we regually go to the gym, I was wondering if working out ( benching and curling and all that ) hurts your pool game. Alot of people from my pool hall said it does because your muscles get use to to a pool stroke and working out changes your muscles and stuff. I wanted to hear what you guys have to say, Any advice or comments and stuff will be great help :D Thx

I've noticed that if I do a lot of physical work which builds up my muscles, it will throw off my game a little. But doing drills and practicing for a week or so will get me back in line.

I would think that "muscle building" for a 17 year old would be more important than pool. It can come in quite handy to be strong so far as work goes.

Enjoy being young - build those muscles! (Might be less inclined to do this in later years....:) )

I agree, it shouldn't hurt and should help. Just keep playing pool. It sure didn't seem to hurt Tiger's golf swing.

The best I ever played was at 41 years old when I was working out 5 days per week.

My experience has been that if you are going to work out with weights, you must continue to play pool in the meantime. In other words, keep those muscles active and stretched. If you take time off from pool for several months while you are building yourself up, you are going to have problems with your stroke when you come back.

A couple of buff guys who are pool players related this to me. One was Robert Yamasaki, a good player and a body builder.

After wprking out with weights just make sure you cool down to get rid of the lactic acid. How? Just walk briskley for 10 minutes and you shouldn't have any problems.

If possible, I would opt for swimming instead of working out with weights.

You get the best of both worlds...You will be well defined, but not "I am going to pump you up" silly.

I agree with Jay, as long as you do both consistently, you should be OK. Taking a break from either will disrupt the regular workload your muscles are used to.

Having started to lift again recently, i would suggest making sure you schedule your offdays around tourneys or league night if applicable. Your best gains are on rest days, and you won't be all pumped up at the pool hall. Also, stretching and limiting your max reps will make a difference. Good luck!

If you keep "eating that iron" you will most likely start to play better pool. So much of the game is mental. If you lift properly and eat the right foods(add a protien shake as soon as you finish your work out) you will soon see benefits. You will feel better about yourself (more self confidence) and you will play better as a result.

Jay is right that you should continue to play as you go and of course my advice is predicated on the assumption that you are not suffering from or aflicted by any medical condition (known or unknown) which could cause you problems either from lifting or protien etc... - check with your Doctor and let him know your intentions.

Some one will surely say the effect of lifting and the laws of phyisics can adversely affect your stroke etc... but in the long run again assuming no medical or mental problems - you will feel better about yourself and that alone will help you to play better.

To be totaly honest though, I used to be a pretty fair horseshoe chucker. Started lifting every other day and at age 40 got in the best shape of my life. To make a long story short I think my game probably fell off a bit. I can't be sure why, but I gladly take the tradeoff if it is because of the lifting.

The benefits of lifting assuming you lift properly, cannot be overstated.
keep it up you! will be glad you did!

By the way the same applies to playing pool - the proper techniques etc..
good luck to you with both endeavors

You'll be fine. Just remember your basics. Keep in line and a loose grip hand. And most of all, don't be a dumba$$. Keep everything in perspective and be good to your parents. Unlike pool cues, you only get one set of them.
