World 14.1 Championship Group Draws!

No biggie, Lewdo. Will you be at the event? Hope so, and perhaps we can sweat a match or two together.
I'll be there for sure. I'm so excited I can't stop staring at the clock!

It'd be great to sweat a few runs and learn with you, sjm. As I'm sure you know.

It befuddles me that some can't help but focus on the fact that a handful of marquee players are not in the field.

SJM,
I hope you weren't referring to me (I agree with you). When I listed the absent names, I did so in full knowledge of their status (aged, deceased, etc.). I only pointed it out as a "changing of the guard" moment - made more noticeable by the interval since the last big American 14.1 tournament.

Let us all realize that the reason there are far fewer "well known straight poolers" right now is because there haven't been any big competitions the last 6 years in which they could have made a name for themselves. Lack of titles in straight pool does not mean the participants in this tournament can't play.

I agree with you 1000%. Charlie has done his best to assemble the greatest players in the world. When this event starts on May 30, I will be very happy that 14.1 is once again in the spotlight that it deserves in the world of pocket billiards. I spoke with Danny Harriman this morning. He is on his way to NJ right now, and he WILL be playing in this event. That is a testament to Charlie's willingness to ensure that the best players are playing in this event. It also means that certain past issues have been put to rest. In addition to this event, Charlie is also promoting a UPA 10 ball event in Jacksonville. Doing both of these events back to back, he should be commended for his tireless efforts. No event wil be perfect, but I believe that Randy and Charlie have done their best to provide a great venue for the players and the fans. Hopefully this will be the start of great things to come for the game of 14.1 - and hopefully next time I will be invited as a player also. (no sour grapes from this chair... I'm content with marveling at the greats doing what they do best) - next year I will try to qualify.

That's a nice upbeat post, Dave.

No, I wasn't referring to you. Your post framed the changing of the guard nicely.

Nonetheless, I contest the implication of some that there has been no high level straight pool competition of late. Of course, there has been far less straight pool competition than straight pool buffs like you and I would like. In America, we have only had the small-field NJ State championships to bring some of the truly elite together. Hohmann vs Robles and Barouty vs Manalo were two of the last three finals there, undeniable heavyweight bouts between established stars of straight pool. Straight pool is a large field, feature event at the European Championships, too, and great European straight poolers like Engert, Hohmann, Feijen, Souquet, Ortmann and Immonen have shown their pedigrees in that event.

Yes, we'd like more data to examine, but we are in possesion of considerable evidence that the best of the best straight poolers are headed for New Jersey this week.

Wish you were going to be there, my friend.

Here we go again?

First of all I could not be happier that 14.1 has returned to the scene.

BUT... with all the hoopla about this being a WORLD championship and the many threads and posts about deserving a spot in this event, what the hell happened!!!

No question the field is strong, but with many top 14.1 players that are not in the field and a few players I know personally that can't beat me (and I am a nobody) makes me sick.

For the promoter of this event, I wish him the very best because I have heard nothing but good things about him. But who ever put this list together did so behind closed doors and this is what you get...

A WORLD INVITATIONAL.

Whoever wins will undoubtedly be a TRUE champion, but it would be a much greater title to win if the players were all of his or her peer group.

Just don't like seeing names that do not belong.

Most of the world straight pool championships throughout history have been elite invitational events with only a handful of players competing. Back in the golden age you might only have a dozen. Granted those names are some of the greatest of all time, but to say this event is a closed affair doesn't match up to historical examples. There were qualifiers and there are many invitees. Keep in mind that the title of this event is not a "open championship".

Rempe, West, Martin, Fusco and few other names were invited and not able to make the event
Thanks for clarifying that. It'll be a great event.

There will be the 1st Annual Goldwater Award given to the player with the highest run during the event.
The player will receive a trophy and $1000 Bonus.

Thank you to Randy Goldwater

I havent read all the posts so this might be redundant. Can we use the much accepted initials JPN to refer to those cueists from Japan. As opposed to the letters JAP which is also a derogatory term. Thanks!
