Top Pinoys gunning for glory in Rotterdam

Both Players' Profile: http://www.worldcupofpool.com/Philippines.htm

Francisco "Django" Bustamante and Dennis Orcullo will try to reclaim one of the most prestigious
billiards titles on the planet as they team up to carry the Philippine flag in the 2008 PartyPoker.net
World Cup of Pool from October 7 to 12 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Bustamante and Orcullo will compete against 31 other pairs from around the world in this tournament
that offers a total prize fund of $250,000 including the winners' purse of $60,000.

Their campaign is supported by the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines
(BMPAP) and Senate President Manny Villar's Villards, which is their chief sponsor.

"I think we have a strong chance to recover that World Cup," said Bustamante, whose partnership
with pool maestro Efren "Bata" Reyes won the Philippines the title in the event's inaugural staging in
2006.

They failed to defend the crown last year, losing to eventual champion Fu Jianbo and Li He-wen of
China in the quarter-finals.

"With Dennis, we have a combination of experience and talent, and old and new style. I also think
that we have a good chemistry, which is very essential in this kind of competition," added the former
world's top-ranked player from Puyat Sports.

Orcullo, a stalwart of Bugsy Promotions, is the reigning WPA World No.1, and he will be looking to
extend his recent winning run.

He has so far won four major tournaments this year - the San Miguel Beer-Quezon City 9-Ball Champion-
ship, the All-Japan Open, the 2008 Qatar International 9-Ball Open and China leg of the 2008 Guinness
Tour.

"I hope I could continue my good performance, and with Django, I'm confident of our chances," said
Orcullo.

In Holland, the Filipino duo is seeded at two, just behind the defending champions and they will open
their bid against Denmark, bannered by Martin Larsen and Kasper Kristoffersen.

The other countries competing in the tournament are Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysian,
Chinese-Taipei, Thailand, Vietnam, Canada, the United States, Australia, Peru, Qatar, Austria, Belgium,
Croatia, England, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Malta, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland,
and two teams from the host nation.

yes and yes, Rodney is cool and SVB is very nice, they got along great we all went to dinner 2 nights during the M-Cup and I was in the players room most of the time, everyone got along great. They are pro's and put aside any issues they might have-including Earl. They were there to win and are all too professional to let anything get in the way, they just didnt play good enough to win, there was zero behind the scenes drama between the players-there was one argument between a player and someone else on the 3 rd day in the players room, I just sat there and listened and it had no effect on anything and until now it was never mentioned, it was over before anyone left the room no blood was spilled and everyone left ok and not pissed off.

Philippines show why they are the favorites

Team Philippines showed why they are tournament favourites as they took care of business at
the Outland Nightclub in Rotterdam, Holland, beating Denmark 8-2.

Consisting of WPA World No.1 player Dennis Orcullo and Francisco "Django" Bustamante, the
Philippines looked comfortable throughout against the Danish side of Martin Larsen and Kasper
Kristoffersen.

The Philippines got off to a great start as they won the opening three games before a scratch
allowed the under pressure Danes to the table and they took the opportunity to get to 3-1.

A failed jump shot from the Danes that sailed over the blocking balls but failed to connect with
the blue 2, meant ball in hand for the Pinoys and they took full advantage to move into a 4-1
lead.

Bustamante missed a long cut on the 2 ball but didn't really leave much for his opponents, but
they laid an excellent snooker. The Filipinos returned the favour and although Denmark escaped,
they left a window and Orcullo and Bustamante comfortably cleared to lead 5-1.

A miss from Orcullo allowed the Danes a chance and they nearly blew it but Larsen's attempt on
the 8 ball wobbled in the top pocket and then gently rolled into the centre bag.

Kristofferson deposited the 9 ball to get to 5-2 but they allowed the Philippines back to the table
in the next and they ran out to move to 6-2.

Orcullo though, failed to make a legal break in the next but the Danes put them back in. They
pushed out and then took advantage to run out to move to the hill.

Bustamante delivered a big break in what was the last rack of the game and the classy pair
maneuvered their way around the table to clear up and take the match 8-2. They will now meet
the Russian pair of Stepanov and Chinakhov for a place in the quarter finals.

My pleasure Roy! I'm at your service!

What's your take on the Italy vs. Korea match-up Roy? Although Korea is unseeded and Italy is
seeded 9th, I like Korea's chances, and a sportsbook seems to agree with me, they have the odds
pegged at 4/7 for Korea, and 5/4 for Italy. I don't know much about Bruno Muratore although he
showed tremendous promise at the WTBC, what you think Roy?

Bruno Muratore is ranked 2nd in Europe right now, and has had an amazing 1,5 years of playing pool now, considering he is 40+ and this is his best year ever.

I will definitely go for Italy in that matchup, but that is because I don't know much of Korea...

My guess on the other matches:

China (1) vs. Switzerland (16)

Italy (9) vs. Korea

England (5) vs. Canada

Poland (13) vs. Germany (4)

Belgium vs. Austria

Croatia vs. USA (6)

Holland B vs. Japan (10)

Philippines (2) vs. Russia (15)
