World Cup Of Pool

As a American (if indeed your are) shouldn't you be rooting for the USA?

Posting a question like that out of the blue to someone who has stated in the very first post of this thread that he is travelling to the event from Romania and who has said absolutely nothing in his posts or put anything in his profile to suggest he's American, seems a little strange. Wouldn't it be more natural to assume that a poster of that ilk who has also clearly expressed support for a non-American team ISN"T American:confused:

As it happens he's a Romanian pool player and no doubt if Romania had a team in the event he'd be rooting for them. What's USA got to do with it? ;)

Repeat after me......"it's not that I'm paranoic................it's just that EVERYBODY!!!! thinks I am":)

In the venue though... Don't think they'll have wireless..
It's a night club..
Can remember a lot of first things I've done there.. ;)

And no wooden shoes in Rotterdam!!!
Only in the souvenir shops.. :P

wonder if there is any prominent AzB'er around that could ask them to set that up. it shouldn't have to be very complicated, the set-up that is.

i, on the contrary, thank lord, can't remember any of the first things i've done in night clubs

should be easy to set up but if they'll want to do it for a few days of pool? :S
Matchroom might have their own network with them..
That what we normally do during Eurotours...

Presumably they haven't been unecessarily and unreasonably refused visas by the host country like the unfortunate incident last year preventing the other Chinese lad making his IPT debut in USA;) :)

Good question, but I assume they would be OK. Both have traveled extensively outside China previously. Fu has been to the US for the IPT and Li has played in Europe.

WCP bets

I would like to take some fun bets (may be not fun if there is too much value) on H2H clashes. Could you share what you think about the outcomes of first round games?
I fancy Austria (Martin Kempter and Albin Ouschan) to beat Australia (Stuart Lawler and Shaun Budd). I admit that I don't know about the Aussies a lot but I know the Austrian's weight well enough. While they are set as a slight underdog.
Philippines are likely to beat Scotland, but @1.01 (-1000) I wouldn't take it.
Also I prefer Russia @1.8 (-125) over Croatia.
Qatar @9 (800) could be valuable to upset Finland, though Immonen plus Juva are strong. Again, I don't know Qatar at all.

Fixtures are
1. Croatia v Russia, 2. China v South Africa,
3. Japan v Spain, 4. Philippines v Scotland,
5. France v Italy, 6. Holland A v Indonesia,
7. Australia v Austria, 8. India v Canada,
9. Vietnam v Korea, 10. Germany v Singapore,
11. Taiwan v Denmark, 12. Holland B v Belguim,
13. Hungary v Switzerland, 14. Qatar v Finland,
15. England v Poland, 16. USA v Malta.

I agree that Stepanov has a great stroke,i played few games with him and it was pure pleasure. But hes got problems with concentration, especialy when he wants to win to much.I saw him live with Ralph Souqet and he did too many "unforced" mistakes and lost high.Dont forget about Polish team,Radoslaw Babica is getting better and better on international arena,he dont have some great strokes but he has great ability to play under great pressure.Sniegocki is a big unknown hehe.
But for strongest team are USA and phillipines.

You quoted my post, did you not read it? It CLEARLY says "If indeed you are". Which to most RATIONAL people, would indicate that I had no idea what his nationality was at the time. Therefore a simple "He is Romanian" would have worked.

What are you getting your knickers in a twist about?

My post was covered with smileys and was intended to be light hearted. I apologise if it came across otherwise.

A simple "I didn't read the thread before posting" would have worked;) :)

Hey, i wasnt even ofended by the "rooting for Fillipines" remark :).

Well, reporting hasn't gone good so far, being my first trip to Holland , and finding out that some things that are forbidden in other countries here are everywhere.
I'm starting to recover and hopefully i'll try writing small oppinios about this tournament.Got Busta and Efren to sign my case so i'm happy.

WCP Impressions so far :

Good:
Very nice venue and playing conditions, fast 860 electric blue Simonis.
On the main table floor there are some pool cues and accesories booths, first time i see this at an event wich is allways nice. You can also watch the matches on some plasma tv's troughout the venue, it's nice because you can watch the amaising shots replayed.

Bad :
Not some many seats for the spectators and the ones that are are unconfortable to sit it for long time (it's a disco club i know, but they sould have done something about that). Not much i can find bad, i'm just happy i can watch these great players

That's great MJ Ro....you and your friends have lots of fun.

Just ignore us others who are sniping at each other in here, we're only jealous cos we're not there and need to hit out at somebody:D :)

As was mine. It was simply a touche :D

I played some 1p with Vincent Fauquet and won like 2 games from the 15 we played, we played even :).

Got more signatures on my case from Corey , Rodney and Mika Immonen.I'm in heaven :).

Barry : maybe we can play some 1p one of these days, just some cheap sets
for like 10E, let me know how i can recognise you at the WCP so we can talk.

The USA just squeaked by Malta 8-7! Do you believe it? Malta!
This is not a good sign. I don't think they will make the finals this year.

I like Rodney and Corey, but if I got to pick two US players this year, I would have chosen SVB and Schmitty. They're young, they're deadly and they're HUNGRY!

USA clinch victory in an absolute thriller

USA secured a dramatic 8-7 victory in the best match of the tournament so far in the 2007 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool.

The second seeded Americans side of Rodney Morris and Corey Deuel looked to be heading out of the competition as they trailed 5-2 and 7-4 to Malta before breaking and running through the final four racks to clinch the win.

Malta had suffered a torrid World Cup of Pool campaign in 2006 as they lost 9-0 against eventual winners Philippines.

Alex Borg and Tony Drago were again in the Malta side and they won the lag. Tony Drago, who this week was announced as part of the European side that will play in the Mosconi Cup against America in December, is renowed as one of the fastest players in world pool.

He justified this as he and partner Alex Borg raced through the opening rack in only 90 seconds for a 1-0 lead.

In the second, USA were soon back at the table but Corey Deuel missed the blue 2 into the bottom left pocket, before Drago failed to sink an attempted red 3 into the left centre as America took advantage to level it at 1-1.

This was proving to be the most thrilling start to any of the matches of the tournament as Malta profited from another USA error to move into a shock 2-1 lead.

Malta then sprinted through the fourth rack with the 9-ball being deposited only 64 seconds after the break shot to thrill the packed crowd at the Outland Nightclub in Rotterdam, Holland.

It was a similar story in the fifth with the only worrying moment for Malta coming when Drago slightly underhit the positional shot going from the 8-ball to the 9-ball. The shot was harder for Alex Borg than he would have liked but it made no difference as the score became 4-1 to leave the second seeds shell-shocked.

Both sides made errors in the sixth as Drago and Borg both failed with attempts on the red 3, before Morris did the same with the brown 7.

However, this time Malta could not take advantage as Borg missed with his shot on the 8-ball and that gifted America a chance to regain their composure and claim their second rack.

But Malta soon regained their three-rack advantage after Morris rolled the 4-ball unsuccessfully towards the bottom left pocket and that brought Malta back to the table for a 5-2 lead with a shock looking on the cards.

The Europeans moved through the balls but a potential turning-point came when Borg sunk the 6-ball and then had to watch in horror as the cue ball rolled up the table and into the top right pocket. USA did the rest to pull it back to 3-5.

Deuel scratched off the break as the cue-ball was kicked in by the 5-ball but it did not prove decisive as a foul from Borg gave the Americans ball-in-han d and the gap was now only one.

With the red 3 hidden behind both the 4 and 6-balls, Deuel attempted a kick shot off the top rail but the cue ball bounced off the three and then into the pocket. Malta had ball-in-hand and Drago finished off the rack and threw his arms in the air as his side moved a step closer to a memorable victory.

America were stuck in their chairs hoping to get another shot. It did not happen in the next as Malta broke and ran through the rack for a 7-4 lead as they moved to the hill.

In the 12th, Borg attempted a one-rail escape to connect with the 1-ball but only managed to double kiss the ball and that left a great chance for USA, which they accepted but still trailed 5-7.

With the winner-break format, USA could still run out the next three racks but had very little margin of error. They did the first part by keeping Malta in their seats for the 13th and the scoreboard now showed 6-7.

It became the first hill-hill match of the competition as a stunning reverse bank shot on the 1-ball from Deuel as the cue ball only narrowly avoided the pocket. That helped America make it 7-7 and with a perfect break in the next were in prime position to complete the win.

Corey Deuel sunk the final 9-ball to put the Americans in the last 16 and finally end the brave resistance of the Malta side.
