World Darts on now a lesson for pool?

I actually enjoy watching darts just as I enjoy watching pool .. judging by the crowd, the world dart championship appears to be doing something right, but I have no clue what it is
 
World Darts

This is on SKY Sports. I thought this was MatchRoom event but I have not seen their logos or similar.

Here is what I have noticed.

Everyone commented on the crowd behavior at the Mosconi Cup. Lots of discussion on the crowds chanting and stuff. How the Europeans just outshouted and out cheered the US crowd.

The dart crowd is doing the same - so I have to assume that it has nothing to do with pool and everything to do with culture.

Darts is an english pub game so has a lot of history. But I find it amazing that they get so loud. Americans are just to reserved I guess.

It looks like the crowd is several thousand - I imagine they are using a lot of big screen TV etc. The game is VERY fast paced!

10 years ago (or so) I watched some of this - I think the players were a little better and more consistent. But these guys are GOOD!

Mark, these guys are not playing their best in this final, overall the standard of darts is much higher these days, lots of money in this game and many great players vying.
 
How much are the entry fees for the tournaments? Are there any US players making 6 figures? Johnnyt
 
I used to play with Paul Lim, you can google him. Talk about amazing to watch in person, I am a 7 in medalist soft tip and he was a 15 at the time. Who knows what he is now. He used to be a steel tip champion as well.

If I miss the board, I want to be sure I will stick it in someones drywall.

Just amazing to see how accurate these guys can be tho.
 
While this is not a Matchroom Event, Barry Hearn is chairman of the PDC. He has transformed darts into a massive thing with betting on site for most tournaments, obviously wanting the 'fans' (aka drunken idiots) to turn up in full flow and hyped up the game with the walk-ons and some of the rivalries. Barneveld/Taylor is up there with Ali/Frazier and got so many people talking.

Darts was popular before Barry Hearn came along through, it was on the BBC for many many years. It was showcased on 'The Indoor League' before the World Championships were first played out in 1978. What Barry Hearn is took the players who had made darts what it was (Bobby George aside) and then glamorised the sport. Personally, I think its too glammed up, I cant stand the cheerleaders on stage they add absolutely no value for me. Maybe for drunken pervs they do but thats the point - the darts 'fans' can have a whale of a time.

Look how bad the Power Snooker looked with drunken yobs etc trying to turn snooker into darts? Can you imagine the fuss caused if you had the same stuff happen in pool??? You think the Mosconi Cup was bad? It would be much worse than that for sure...
 
but it was on TV :D even my brother who hates pool, snooker and darts tuned in because he loved how the crowd supported (or buuuh ed :)) the players ;)
 
Thanks for the link. I wish US TV would show darts once in awhile. I really don't know why pool and darts do so well overseas but not here.
