The first set of qualifiers for the next IPT tournament, the World Open, are in progress: http://www.internationalpooltour.com/ipt_content/event_qualifiers/online_coverage.asp

Many of the qualifier winners for the North American Open, beginning next weekend, are competing in these qualifiers too.

One difference I did notice is the World Open qualifiers, as compared to the North American Open qualifiers, is that there are no challenge tables this go-around.

However, the top two winners of the World Open qualifiers will receive the green light to play in the World Open, and the players who come in third through sixth place still enjoy a free entry fee to an upcoming qualifier of their choice.

The World Open qualifier at Hard Times in Bellflower has one tough field of contenders this weekend. Good luck to all the players!:)

In WO-4 in Seattle, they have a Brady Gallon listed... and identified as an American.

By best guess is this is Brady Golan from Canada.

I'm not at Jillian's so it's just a calculated guess.

So far, here's an update. :p

In Tulsa at Magoos, North Carolinian Keith Bennett is ripping up the greenways, defeating Danny Medina 10 to 3 and James Walden 10 to 2 on the winners' side.

At Gallery Billiards in Allentown, PA, New York City's Frankie Hernandez knocked Ronnie Wiseman to the B side, but then soon joined Ronnie his next round as Larry Nevel continues his winning ways and is looking like a favorite.

At Jillian's in Seattle, it's hard to pick a favorite, but Michael Vidas is looking to go all the way to the finish line.

The charts are still at ground zero at Hard Times in Bellflower, CA, but Filipino Ramil Gallego and California champs Tang Hoa and David Hemmah each got a bye. AzBilliards' Corey Harper pulled Filipino Rodolfo Luat on his very first round.

The qualifiers at Shooter's in Burnsville, Minnesota won't begin until 8:00 p.m. tonight.

From Seattle

Brady Gollan ran a 6 pack on Victor Ignacio and cruised to a beautiful finish.

Mike Vidas and Teddy Garrahan went hill-hill. On the break that put Teddy on the hill, Mike was positioning the CB with his stick, and Teddy called a foul on him because it had been called on him at the last qualifier. It was settled that it was no longer a foul. Mike went ahead and broke and came up dry and Teddy ran out to tie it up.

Then Teddy broke and scratched and Mike ran out to win the match.

Mike made an excellent runout earlier when he cut a 4 that was glued to the side pocket point, past the side pocket and down the rail into the corner with about a 75 degree angle.

Glen Atwell and Mark Trainer got the extra match and neither one plays very fast. Glen won 10-4 but was very nervous!

No challenge matches. Some of the players are complaining because they thought that if they didn't win a spot, at least they were guaranteed a shot at beating the IPT pro. The TD called and they confirmed no challenge matches this time around.

Brady and Steve Higton just started their match. Steve says he is England's #2 guy and didn't get his application into the IPT in on time or he would have been a shoe-in. I guess he beat Mike Davis in the Finals somewhere, 9-0. I think Brady is going to give him a run for his money.

Victor is playing Mark Trainer and Glen Atwell is playing a black gentleman from CA, Harry Young.

I don't think Teddy is too happy. He loses one match hill-hill and doesn't play again until tomorrow! :(

I had to look at the chart because I didn't know what "the extra match" was. LOL. After a peak, I saw these poor chaps were the only two players who didn't get a bye!

Thanks for the great reporting on the happenings in Seattle.

No challenge matches but I believe that those who finish 3-6 get a paid entry to another qualifier.

Before they had to win the challange match to get a paid entry.

This way 4 people will automatically win.

I see the first player through is the young German Superbreaker Kevin Becker...Well done Kevin!

Kevin finished 4th at the Shanghai Qualifier a few weeks ago.

I believe that 3-6 were getting a free entry even when they had the challenge matches.

I guess this shoots holes in the "qualifiers paying for the tour" theory. Unless Kevin is banking on getting 100 people per qualifier.

Surprises ...

At Gallery in Allentown, Pa - Thought it was interesting to note that
the unkinown hustler, Gary Abood, and Rico Diks, were both eliminated.

And Tony Crosby is playing Larry Nevel for the winner's side. I am rooting for Tony ...

Sorry jjinfla but that is definitely wrong information.Players finishing 3-6 in every one of all 25 qualifying tournaments for the NA Open got a free entry to another qualifier.Additionally in every one of all 25 qualifying events another 4 eliminated players from the field got a chance to beat the attending pro for a free entry to another qualifier (except for the Australian event which didn't have enough entrants left over to play in the pro challenges);)

Tony is now going to play Frankie for the second spot.

Okay memkey, I rechecked an old press release and see that you are right.

KT must be running out of money due to the increase in the cost of gas to fly his plane around so he is cutting his losses at the qualifiers.

Darn Bush, it's all his fault.

$40 to fill my wife's car with gas this morning. Anyone feel sorry for me?

This just in...

...from Hard Times in Bellflower, California:

"Dave Hemmah attempted to mount a comeback down 8-2 and even got Luat on an Illegal break which yielded him ball in hand, but he ran out of steam and ended up losing the match 10-6."

"It was a clash of the titans as Corey Harper and Johannes Kauhanen went head on in a match where both player's towered over 6 feet tall. These two made Ramil Gallego and Rodolfo Luat just seem tiny in comparison. As each player released their game, it looked like it was over as Kauhanen jumped to an early lead and Harper seemed drained. But Harper dug in his giant heels and fought back, eventually getting even Kauhanen, but in the end he was no match for Johannes as he took the match 10-7. Johannes Kauhanen is a name to look out for in the future. He shoots straight, has a monster break, and can play safes pretty well."

"Ramin Bakhtiari was holding well against Paez and was even up at one point, but a fateful failure to call a combo shot resulted in a foul and allowed Paez to steal the game to put him up 9-8 and eventually the match at 10-8."

- Ken Thomason, Tournament Director

Nice commentary from the TD, taken from the IPT website.

Speaking of which, ain't it nice to have the website updates on these qualifiers. I'm thoroughly enjoying reading about them, as opposed to waiting a period of time after the fact.

Looks like the tension is building in Bellflower! :p

Hopefully they were just thinking that the members were getting ready for the tournament next week and didn't want to bother them and they will have challenge matches at the rest of the qualifiers. I would think the challenge matches would be a good practice session though so I am not sure how much sense that makes.

Karl Boyes (Boyzi) got through at Bellflower.

It was 5-5 at one point against Rodolfo Luat in the losers but he ended up winning 10-6. :) :) :) :)

He's very happy - plus it's a boost for the US Open next week too!!! :)

God on him! He's been very impressive in several qualifiers as I recall.

I expect he'll do enough in the NA Open and World Open to get his card in 2007.

Well, our boy, Glenn Atwell, made it hill-hill against Brady Gollan. He never led until it was 9-8. Then he scratched on the break and Brady ran out to make it hill-hill. We thought we were done. Then Brady breaks dry. Glen took a hinky shot and moved a stripe which made the 5 extremely difficult to cut in the side and had half a pocket to go in the corner. He got straight in on the 5 for the corner, nailed it and with the stop shot, had the 8 in the side. Not bad for a $100 entry in a mini-Q!

Whew! The US was exulting, since the only other 2 left were Canadians - Brady and his road partner, Mike Vidas. At the last Q, Mike Vidas won his spot and Gandy Valle knocked Brady out from qualifying. We couldn't imagine how he would feel if he came in 3rd in both qualifiers!

Brady actually had a great opportunity to 3-foul Glenn, but didn't know the 3-foul rule was in effect. Instead, he made a ball, then combo'ed in Glenn's last ball and let Glenn see the very edge of the 8, with an extreme back cut down near the spot. Glenn asked if scratching on the 8 was a loss. It wouldn't really matter, since BIH is just as bad! Anyway, he fired that sucker in like it had eyes! Another time, he banked in an 8 full table length. He really earned his spot. At one point, it was 7-3, Brady!

We left to go play another bar table tournament, this time, races to 3, 9-ball. Glenn and I played each other to go to 4th place. I broke and ran the first game. He won the 2nd, I won the 3rd, and he tied it up, hill-hill. I just didn't have the heart to win...he was playing for gas money to get home to Portland on. Ahh, the life of a pool champion! :o Even though I had the opportunity to win the last game, I just couldn't, lol. :o

So while we are at the tournament, we keep calling Jillian's with an update. When we left, Vidas was up 5-4. Vidas had the chance to make it 5-0, but missed a ball and let Brady back in. Our first call had Vidas up 9-8, then it was 9-9 and Vidas was shooting. We just thought it was over.

I called just as it ended and Brady had won. I pulled a long face and told Mike and Glenn that Vidas had won and they were disheartened for Brady. Then I told them that Brady had really won and they both lit up. It was cute.

What a long weekend it has been! From trying to get Glenn to Jillian's each day on time to pacing his eating and coffee, to practicing with that Break doo-dad that hooks to your table.

Saturday, we started with enough time to get him there an hour early, which is what Mike and I like to do, not walk in 2 minutes before our matches, like Glenn does. Well, he had to stop and get air in his tires, then stop and get an espresso. Then the freeway was backed up for miles due to a dumptruck that lost its load several miles away on THE OTHER side of the freeway! Then once we hit Seattle, there was a major slowdown when a cop car had pulled someone over. Finally, we flew into Jillian's with 5 minutes to spare, and I told Mike, "Glenn probably thinks he is 3 minutes earlier than usual!" :p

Anyway, we had a good time this weekend, but we are glad it's over and we can now concentrate on The Venetian tournament!

In the match with Brady Golan, Mike Vidas did a beautiful shot on the 6 to get shape on the 5B. Nicely done, he almost sank the 8B tho, as it moved slightly.
