Worst production/commentary yet for IPT

The fact that Mike Sigel would continuosly refer to Efren as Efrem is mind boggling and completely disrepectful and I will never understand the 2/3 minute Tagalog speech/montage by Efren that there was no attempt to translate. What idoit approved the notion that the public wants to listen to extended commentary in a foreign language with no attempt at translation. I am very dissapointed at these extreme oversights and Sigel's lack of respect.

Also, not kevin or mike but the other guy thinks that none of the people at home know what is going on. hes say the lamen at home dont even know thats possible.

It's getting exciting!

It is getting exciting now! I actually turned from the fourth recent repeat of the world dominoes championship from 1993 to watch this.

I actually thought this was the best one yet. The less the commentators talk and more specifically the less they talk about why the IPT is so great the better the production is. Could have seen more of Efrem(!) shooting and half of him talking. I guess the IPT was trying to prove it is international by skipping a translation.

I'm still not keen on recaps instead of games. I don't watch any other sport in recaps either.

This IPT showing does mark a history first. Not only did I not sleep through any of the first showing of it, I didn't get lost on another channel during commercials. As you can see for me this is almost a ringing endorsement of the IPT.

AARRHG! I just had a painful thought: With Mike Sigel playing the whole tournament in July, I was hoping we would get a commentator up there. When he gets put out early we will be right back where we started. I wonder if we could start a fund to pay a few players to lay down playing him?

Corey Duels pre-game interview cracked me up. He didn't look comfortable at all.

Is it just me or does it seem that there is just too much contrast. Everything looks "shadow-ie" and dark. Maybe they are trying to create a dramatic effect, but it doesn't work for me.

according to "mike the mouth" everyone is "inexperienced" lol There is more than one way to run a rack.

Efren looked great as usual

TV show

I watched tonight and was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it very much, even more after watching the recent IPT qualifier in Atlanta and understanding (better) just how good these guys are. Efren's run out in his last game with Buddy Hall was amazing. I would have liked to have seen more of Corey and Mika's match, but the production was enjoyable. The lack of a translation of Efren was of course ridiculous, as is a lot of Mike Sigel's commentary, but still it was a good show.

I agree

I am not normally a nay-sayer and I always want good things to happen to pool and I want to watch as much pool on TV as I can, but there is a dark side to the IPT. Four points below:

1. They mislead people by saying someone is "X-time world champion" or they have won "X tournaments". The tournaments they refer to are 9-ball, which they continually knock down at every opportunity. To say Karen has won X-tournaments while Mike has won Y-tournaments is misleading because those are in two different associations than the IPT and the IPT is using the hard work and longevity of the other associations.

2. Even tho I am not a 9-ball player, it completely surprises me that everyone takes the 9-ball bashing by KT and the announcers with no return bashing. They make it sound like 9 ball is for 4-year olds at the kiddie table. It is disgusting when you add to the fact that they are using the rankings of 9-ball (misleading) as described in 1.

3. The production sucks, especially after witnessing their Reyes interview. Reyes must be shaking his head in Phlipino (at least we could translate that ourselves). Also, to watch the last rack of the match without showing how it got there paints an incomplete picture. Did one person play poorly, did one person run every rack in sight? I realize that there is a time constraint, but plllleaase.

4. Three words: Mike Sigel's commentary

As I said before, I am not a basher person, just offering my opinions. You may not agree with my conclusions (maybe you like the Reyes interview, that's your right, but it I welcome anyone to point out the error in my facts.

I hope the IPT steps it up soon.

On a side note, when did criticizing the IPT become tantamount to bashing prez Bush? Remember when the White House lashed back at any criticism by labeling the criticizer a friend of terrorists? Opinions and thought are what drive the greater population, not the other way around.

It's bad, but I'm still watching it. I actually think it's better than the espn stuff.

Also, has anyone seen the latest KT infomercial on the skin stuff? The one woman actually said something to the effect of "it's all natural, so it doesn't cause alergies." I guess someone must be kidding us then with all of these pollen counts!

I'm just bored of hearing the same complaints on this board every single week about the IPT broadcast. Mike Sigel's commentary blah blah blah, Kevin Trudeau blah blah blah, highlights blah blah blah. It's been on for four weeks now. It is what it is. If you think it sucks, fine. If you happen to like it as I do, fine. But there is no reason to be surprised every week when they do the same things you didn't like the 3 previous weeks.

Are you asking the naysayers and bashers to become passive and positive about the IPT?

No I'm not really saying that. People are entitled to whatever opinion they like. I just said I was tired of hearing the same complaints every week. If you've watched the IPT on OLN, or I suppose read this forum you should know what to expect from every broadcast. It's not like next week they're going to start showing full matches or kick KT and Sigel out of the booth. I guess mine is the "facts already in evidence" argument.

Ok I have to chime in on this. I am not bashing the IPT as I think they are doing a decent job of selling to the masses.

My only complaint is the Efren interview with no translation. Anyone who understood Efren (Tagalog I believe) could you translate pleaese.

I am guessing he said he could whip Mike Sigel's butt. (and did of course)
Wishing the IPT the best.

....What he said! i.e., Don't waste your time tuning-in (again) if your only interest is to prove (again) that the format sucks.

The IPT has disproved my usual mantra - that I never met a pool-on-TV show that I didn't like. I don't like this one, and I don't watch it anymore. (Credit insomnia for my interest in this thread; it's 0315 in SoCal. But keep posting, folks.)

Play safe!

Efren Translation

In a nutshell he said he's an Icon in the Phillipines, and while Mike has some amazing accomplishments in his career, He believes he'll win the match. He'll probably support the whole Island for years to come on the money he made

I think the commentary is the main thing holding this show back. I mean Sigel is just plain annoying and I hate hearing about the Slow cloth and tight pockets everytime someone misses a shot from KT.

I enjoy the show and the insight into the players and not just the game, plus I like watching the pros play 8-ball for a change. Just the commentary is just awful.

example: Last night they showed a Match with Manalo shooting and he was playing great as usual. Matt V. said something like "Wow he could even be shooting better then you Mike" and Mike says something like, "No way he is shooting better then me, blah blah blah" Seriously though, Manalo would crush Sigel on Sigels best day and Marlons worst. Sigel wishes he could play like him. Hell he went most of the tournament without losing a match. Sigel only had to play 1 match and he got crushed LOL.

For god's sake KT. The slow cloth and tight pockets did not make a pro miss by a half diamond off. I have never seen a pocket that loose :D

Now maybe this commentary is good for Joe Nopool, but for pool players like us, it is horrible. The said thing is, Im gonna still watch it next week :D

My fingers tremble as I write this post, for fear of being in the minority, but I've gotta say that I enjoy the commentary. I don't think any commentator would cut the mustard when it comes to those of us within this culture providing constructive criticism or opinions. I may like Buddy Hall better than another commentator, for instance, and there may be others who do not like Buddy's commentary. I don't think there is one person on the face of the earth who is going to please the masses, IMHO.

Yes, Mike Sigel needs to say "EFREN" and not "EFREM," and Kevin Trudeau has a Yankee accent which makes his words sound strange to others not from the Yankee region of the country. The other gentleman's commentary, though, seems quite appropriate and fine to me.

I do think they should have had a closed-captioning-type English translation on the bottom of the screen during the video clip of Efren speaking his native language, as the program is in English. However, I'm sure the Filipino pool enthusiasts enjoyed hearing Efren speak in his native language. This program is being broadcast in other countries too.

BTW, I think I read on a foreign pool-related website that Eurosport and/or Skysport is going to broadcast something that has to do with the IPT beginning today, June 26th, but I'm not sure what it is. Maybe it is this show.

I do realize that some may feel that Mike Sigel comes off as thinking he is the BEST in the world at playing pool. In his mind and in his prime, maybe he is and was. Who knows how well Marlon Manalo or others may be when they are Mike Sigel's age?! To tell you the truth, I think most players at that level when they step up to the plate believe that they are the BEST pool player in the world. That's just the way some champions think, no matter how old they are or how many titles they have won.

Mike Sigel, as some may know, was, indeed, a player who captured many titles in his heyday. The players I know who were competing in this era sure as hell didn't like seeing him on the other end of the table. He retired and has just returned, thanks to the IPT. For an old feller, he still plays pretty doggone good for someone who hasn't hit thousands of balls every single day as he did when he was active on the tournament trail. Give the man a break.

JMHO, FWIW!

I wanted to make a few remarks about last week's broadcast. I didnt see last nights, but I know some facets remained the same in this week's show.

First, remember this is put together for non pool playing public. These matches are shown not fully for this reason. Think of poker and how it is popular. Does the network or the controlling interests in poker want to show the people at home how the pros may throw away every hand for an hour? Some avid poker players may say at home, I want to know how Phil Ivey built up his chip stack, I want to know what hands he throws away when Jennifer Hartman plays or raises here or there, why cant I see that? Because you cant show every hand! They only show the money movers, the exciting hands, to keep people watching at home.

Same in this telecast! You show recaps, and show the deciding shots missed or made. Show the last couple, or last game to show how it turned out. Get the people to know the players a bit. Introduce them to them. If we want to see a whole safety battle or a whole match, whatever, that is why KT has them for sale!

I think Matt V did a nice job. He has a pleasant voice, and for all of you that may not know what else he does, he is the the voice of the San Diego Padres. He does all the tv and announcing for professional baseball here at home.

I was dissapointed with Sigel that in touting the tour that he has, he has to make disparaging remarks about others. When continuously asked if Allison or Karen were the favorites, he said that the woman's conditions were easier, a joke - basically. No need to do this.

I feel like Karen also could have dressed up her appearance a bit. She is an attractive woman and she looked disheveled to me.

I'm just getting around to watching the round three episode, so forgive my tardiness... (Hooray for Tivo!)

It appears to me that someone on the production end simply "forgot" to add in the subtitles to Reyes' comments. If you can go back and watch that part of the episode, you'll see the video cuts off about 3/4 down, leaving a large black area across the bottom of the screen the entire time Reyes is speaking - this was (IMHO, obviously) intended for English subtitles of Reyes' comments. It seems they simply goofed and let the episode get out without getting the subtitles in.

I wonder if someone got sacked for that one. :/

When the untranslated portion came on, my friend and I commented on KT's marketing strategies and how leaving it as is was probably a technique to show that this is international, not American. Their audience is more than the bangers here in the US and I'm thinking this might be why KT left the interview as is. I thought it right in line with his other interesting strategies (eg. having the finals first, then the first season--smart!). I'm watching this to learn marketing as much as to enjoy pool.

The numbers will tell all.
