Just curious on your thoughts..

2 cues was made using Rosewood forearm, Maple handle, phenolic joint, 3/8 x 11 SS pin, basically identical.

First cue was made by (insert your favorite cue maker here, that has a "Monster hit, hits like a ton, has 7 year wait time etc)

Second cue was made by your average Joe cue maker..

So, would both cues play the same ?

No.
No two woods are the same either .
Different makers have different construction and materials.
Not to mention the shafts.

I thinks he ask if they are given the exact same specs to make the cue, would the experienced builder, build a better cue?

No, he said " Second cue was made by your average Joe cue maker."
It's already made .

I don't have an opinion which one hits better . Just that they would be different.

Get a world-class chef and a cook from your local diner, give them the same ingredients and ask them to make something. I guarantee they won't taste even remotely the same.
Imo, craftsmanship in any field is much, much more than just the sum of all the parts.

The perceived "hit" is a very personal thing.............. and is affected by many aspects of the cue,

So ... the question becomes......... does a big name cue maker build a better cue???

Experience, construction methods and the quality of materials does count in a cue maker's ability to produce a good product.

You would need to try a few to see for your self and make a decision,

A blanket statement either way just won't do.

To which the answer is:

Often but not always...

Maybe, but not necessarily...

you get the idea.

WHAT IF? WHAT IF?? BUT WHAT IF??? I usually do not post any comments about this sort of question. This is a hypothetical question to which there are only hypothetical answers. :frown:

The Point of Your Question Is?

Just curious on your thoughts..

The point of your question is not clear.

In the "lab", on paper, maybe, but in the real world, unlikely.

-The construction methods and internal materials will differ, they will not be precisely the same.
-Some top tier makers will insist on using certain components rather than what you desire. Conversely, the average Joe cuemaker may not even have the skills to execute a build to your specifications.
-Shafts might have different tapers.

Some cuemakers could actually build a cue to your specifications using completely different construction methods in the same shop.

Assuming you are talking about living cuemakers, the group of top tier makers is rather small and would not fill a conference room while the group of "average joe" makers would not fit inside most movie theaters.

As I initially stated, the point of your question is not clear, but I suspect you might be asking if a $300-$400 custom cue will equal that of one costing multiples of that amount. If that is indeed the intent of your question, you might get lucky but I doubt you will find consistency in such a comparison.

Yes I totally agree.

These kind of questions are usually asked, hoping for an answer that the lower level cuemaker will make a cue that hits just as good as the higher priced cue. To be honest I have seen low end custom cues that played better to me than other makers cues that cost thousands of dollars. But to hope the two cues will hit the same is very unlikely. The lower dollar cue may play better or it may play worse, but will almost certainly not play the same.

They play exactly the same. I know. I tried.

I put a big name cue and a cue I assembled on a table. They looked exactly a like. After two hours I could still not tell the difference. Neither of them moved in the entire two hours. One of these days I need to hit some ball with them!
