Would you buy it?

So I've been wanting to try a wrapless cue for a while now. Somewhere in my stroke my thumb rubs on my wrap and after 4 or 5 hours at the table it gets soar and raw.

Anyway, there is a local shop that has a nice sneaky from Jacoby. I've hit some balls with it and I love the hit...it just feels "right" in my hands. The weight is good, the balance it good and it plays better then others I've tried. The thing is the fit/finish isn't great. There is a definite edge where the ferrul is higher then the shaft wood and you can also feel the edges of the splice in the butt. The finish must be pretty thin to feel that I would think and it's very slight. You can also see some clue lines around the splices or little bit of filler maybe (looks like glue though). There is some simple ringwork at the bottom that is flawless though.

So, buy it or not? There are actually two and both have the same issues but the one I like plays a little better for some reason. Price would probably be around $300. For that much I know there are a number of customs I could get but those I can't inspect in person either and I just love the hit on this one.

Heck, if $300 is not gonna "break the bank" for you and you really like the way the cue plays, then buy it. I personally wouldn't fret over any minor aesthetic issues if it is just a "player" you're looking for, but many on this site would shy away from this cue as they want nothing less than perfection. I say buy it!!!

Awww go ahead and buy it. Your thumb will do the same with any cue...SPF=randyg

I would PM poolfool, the guy who sells SneakiestPetes here in the FS/Wanted section. They're 125 a pop with a stock shaft and Kamui Tip (Awesome tip, will cost 30 bucks to get one installed if u go to most cuemakers), and from reviews, they play pretty good. Also, you can ask them to omit the little "SneakiestPete" logo on the butt and put something else there (initials, w/e) for a little more, $15 I think. At least that was the quote I got. You can pick a radial or a 3/8-10 pin. For about a hundred something more they will replace the stock shaft with a high performance shaft, such as I-2, I-3, OB-1, OB-2, 314-2, Z2, Tiger Ultra X, etc. Costs vary but I doubt it will run you more than 300.

Shipping is free too! :D

If I had the same problem as you, I would cut off my thumb! LOL! If you like it, buy it.

buy it

I suspect Randy is right and you will have the same problem with the thumb but you can refinish the cue for another $75-$125 and perhaps minimize the problem. It doesn't matter though. When you find a cue that hits well for you at a price you can afford you should buy it. Price has very little to do with how a cue hits for you and you can find $3000 cues that you like the hit of a lot less than this $300 one.

I use a wrapless that is very sommth. I get a callous on the inside of my thumb. Occasionally, three times this winter, it splits open. Just put on a bandaid and keep going.

I think he said that the wrap was what was hurting his thumb, thus his search for a wrapless.

You beat me to it. I would recommend the same thing. Here is a thread from the Wanted/For Sale section of the Sneakiest with standard shaft.

Poolfool/Rick is a great guy to talk to and deal with. Very easy to tell him what you want and have him make it to you specification. But I would warn you, there are certain features that I remember he would not put on the Sneakiest, because it is a true sneaky pete, for example, he would not put collars on the cue. But run it by him if you are interested. I'd highly recommend Rick. Good luck. :)

Happy shooting!

Hmm, sounds like the wrapless may not actually solve the problem. That makes it less appealing but we'll see. I love the way my Olney hits too, I was just hoping to get rid of my raw thumb issue. Oh well, I can live with it.

YES! But then again I am a wrapless fanatic. Mostly because I grip beyond the wrap and it is useless to me...so over the years I have grown accustom to the look and feel of one.

The only issue you MAY have is finding your grip point with your rear hand since there is no wrap as a gauge...it took awhile for me...but also my first wrapless cue was also a 60" so I was also getting used to the extra 2".

May I also recommend a memorible quote from the movie Joe Dirt to you? "It puts the lotion on its skin." or another my mechanic recommends me, "Lube it or loose it." I don't know if powder or lotion as a anti friction agent on your hands would help your thumb. I never had this problem, but when I played with this splint on for the last few days, I noticed it rubs my thumb a little. I notice I grip my cue a little harder due to loosing the function of my ring and pinky finger. Maybe you are gripping a little hard, but that's just an assumption. Maybe you can wear a glove like Earl, but one problem with this is you might loose some feel from the hit of the cue and you might come off looking a little goofy. Hope this helps, just want to give my .02 to help out.

Happy shooting! :)

P.S. if you like how it hits, buy it!

That quote's from silence of the lambs

learn how to hold a cue properly and you wont have this problem. why do all kinds of changes to things when just gripping your cue right will solve it.

but that aside buy the cue that hits like you want.the finish doesnt mean anything at all. you can sand all the finish off and the cue will be fine and still last forever.

If you like the way it plays, buy it!

I have an odd looking Joss I bought in the 80's because it played great and I still play with it, I've had many other cues but its still my favorite.

If it feels good and you like it, buy it. Aestetics are for cues that belong in a case. I highly doubt it will cure your rubbing problem though!

"It rubs the lotion on the skin, or else it gets the hose again!"

If the ferrule is not smooth with the shaft this can be fixed. It would probably cost no more than $15. You MUST find someone who really know how to do this. The same tool on a lathe that trims the tip can trim the ferrule. Good luck. If it really feels good in your hands then buy it.
