Would you pay a grand to play a great player

Would you be willing to pay, $1000.00 or should I say put up $1,000.00 for the privilege of playing say Efrin Rayes, Allison Fisher, or some other great pool player.
A set of 9 Ball Race to 10, and if you won you got to keep your grand, but if you lost you would be out the grand.

Any takers?

Why would I do that?

Just play em for 1k, if I win, I win 1k and keep mine.

Uh, no. I don't like throwing large wads of sweaty cash at professional pool players just because they're professionals. Now if someone spotted me 14-2 for race to 5 at one pocket, I'd just might put up a grand even if they were a champion.

It is sometimes amusing to see the questions that people who haven't really been around the players will ask. No offense to the OP, it's just that anyone who has ever been around professional pool players know you can play these guys for a lot less than $1000.00, and get a big spot to boot.

i'd play them something cheap but a G risked for nothing gained i don't think that's a good deal. they play good enough that they could put up the money and gamble themselves and still probably win. i'd play for a hundo with no weight asked though but if i win (yeah it's a big if) i get a the hundo i bet.

playing pool doesn't pay that good but neither does what i do haha but i'd gamble even just to do it though. but not for a grand

Like a few people have already said...you can play most of them in their poolroom or on their downtime at tournaments for sets of $100 each or less. Get a wild eight and you might even win a game or two. Johnnyt

I bet if you asked on here if any pros wanted to play some $200 sets with you your PM box would be full in a few hours. Johnnyt

Sure, I'd do it. The day after I win the lottery...

Most pro's will play you much cheaper sets than this. Especially when they're not giving up that much weight and know they're a lock to get the $$. Didn't The One play Efren a set or two (race to nine 8-ball maybe?) in the PI for 100-200 bucks?

This is one of the things I always wonder about when people talk about pro's not making any kind of money. It seems that most of the top guys should be able to book lessons all the time if they only charged 30-50 an hour. That's still a 60-100K a year rate for full-time workers. Seems like you hear about top instructors and the well known pool names charging 75-150 per hour for instruction. That's WAY too much for 90% of the pool players I know.

A lot of these pros also seem to get action from people who just want the experience of playing them. I'm sure only the top guys like Efren get most of these "donations", but a lot of these guys are pretty well known amongst pool players and seem to get easy action pretty frequently. Not a ton of money, but enough to get them closer to what most people with regular jobs make. It still doesn't make travelling for tournements any better deal, unfortunately. I miss the old Reno days with Earl, Rempe, Buddy, Varner,Sigel, Archer,etc...

One of the great things about pool vs other sports is the interaction between pros and bangers. You can enter a lot of tournys and end up playing a top notch pro. Just in the last Derby City, players from my room played Ronny Wiseman, Matlock, and Brumbeck. I played Jeannette for her scoliosis charity for $20/ game. Efren and Jeannette played teams one night at midnight for $50 ?? a game I think? Whoever was there remind me. Try asking Roger Clemens and Alex Rodriguez and Barry Bonds to play a game of baseball for $50:rolleyes:   ..I don't think it will happen. I would pay $1000 to WATCH Luther Lassiter, Willie Mosconi and Efren play a ring game at their PEAKS...when I get a time machine I mean. This is why the public really needs to support pool by attending pool tournaments and playing the pros for $50/ $100. Its an opportunity that doesnt exist anywhere else. Take advantage of it I say!
